This video just wasted 10 minutes of my life. And I love this old stuff, but sheesh, they just introduce people, and then say they're gonna sing, and then don't sing?
Sinatra idolized Bogart and spent many! evenings at his house drinking and partying..and sometimes Judy was there too.
of course Judy and Frank were sexual partners for many years as was Bacall who Sinatra proposed marriage ..then backed out of after she spilled the beans ....
@JadeTomZ I'm not sure about Garland and Sinatra being "sexual partners for many years." Most serious sources mention two flings; one in 1949 and another in 1955. James Kaplan's 2011 comprehensive biography of Sinatra - 800 pages and head-spinningly detailed - doesn't mention Garland except as being at various Sinatra-related events. I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just passing on what I'VE read. And so it goes . . .
@TheStockwell well..there are many books and i think i have read them all....but if you read my life with Sinatra by Franks valet...Jacobs....you will certainly agree there was much more going on then what you describe.
and i would be careful about only using sources you like to describe as "serious".
@JadeTomZ George Jacob's "My Life with Mr.S" is what you're going by as well- written, carefully researched, and objective source material? Wow, but . . . . okay. Sure.
Pete Hamill's "Why Sinatra Matters" is a great overview of Sinatra's entire life but a definitive biography that pulls all the strings together is probably decades away.
You're comments have made my day. Thank you. And so it goes.
@JadeTomZ AS SHOULD BE WELL KNOWN IT WAS SWIFTY LAZAR WHO "SPILLED THE BEANS" but BACALL blamed Sinatra who JUST DIDN'Y WANT the "beans" spilled to the hated (by Sinatra) PRESS!
great audio.appreaciate you sharing this great beginning. I. wish someone could put this together again where photos are reconstructing the event. I would like to think someone took photos of the event, but if they didnt, at least try to make it look as if your there. too many pics that aretn connected.
July 9, 1955; the day that the music scene changed forever. It was on that day that Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley and His Comets hit #1 on the Billboard charts, signifying the start of the Rock Era.
Judy Garland looks so much thinner in the still photographs at the party held for her after the Premiere of A Star Is Born in 1954. It's true that the TV Cameras add 10 -15 lbs on a person. She was about 3 months pregnant with her last child, Jospeh. These are great pictures and I always loved the Picture of Judy Garland laughing & having such a blast with, Frank Sinatra & Dean Martin at 1:44 - 1:54 during her 1962 CBS TV special rehearsal.
Frank in no way avoided Judy. In fact he was the one responsible for paying for Judy's Funeral despite the fact LIZA RAISED the money.. He was appalled by the fact that she wasn't properly buried and was in an interim crypt.
@NFitalianGuy Mr. Sinatra most certainly did NOT pay for Judy's funeral. I know for fact that Liza Minnelli paid the bill. Mr. Sinatra made a lot of hoopla about buying a great crypt in Ferncliff for her -- he was to raise the money -- but he lost interest in the cause, and nearly a YEAR after her death (her remains were held in Ferncliff's storage fault (morgue-like setup), Liza quietly had Judy's body interred in a modest crypt without any fanfare.
Somewhere around th 5:00 mark Dean Martin is recognized as being "from Steubenville" which is in reference to Steubenville, Ohio (my 2nd home) They have all manner of things named after him there...lol. Love this video kinda makes you think these were some of "the good times" for Judy.
At 3:27 someone shouts, "Sing 'Melancholy Baby,'" which refers- if you didn't know it- to the nightclub scene in A Star is Born. It's Bogie's voice-over that says that line to Judy in A Star is Born, in the nightclub scene. Frank and Judy knew each other since the early 40s and Judy tried to get Frank to marry her, without success. Still, they maintained a long-term friends-with-benefits relationship. But disapproving of her hardcore drug addiction at the end of her life, he avoided her.
@defundthewar Poor Judy was a victim of her mother and the star-system! They gave her drugs to sleep and then other ones to wake up and maintain her working!!!
What a fantastic audience of power house celebrities, circa 1955. I have never heard this audio clip before. All there for Judy's performance. She was so highly regarded by her fans and her peers.
Oh my...my mother in law in the nursing home at Long Beach talks about these times. You brought back memories that she mentioned. Now it is realism. Thank you as the people are no longer there to ask and Mom mentioned the elegance. I have the tickets and the programs. And the Barbies from the experience.
