I am tired of correcting this but many people still does the same mistake by labeling this concert as Karajan's last. Has nothing to do with reality since this concert took place in 15.8.1987 and Karajan lived two more years before his death and certainly conducted many concerts (1988 new year concert with Vienna Phil. is one of the more famous ones) and made many recordings.
Summary : This is NOT Karajan's final concert. HIs final concert was with the same orc. and he conducted Bruckner 7.

Such amazing passion Karajan exhibits. I LOVE the beautiful emotion on his fine face when the crescendo hits. He looks as if he might weep. I love that! Such a love of music this man had. So moving, he was the finest conductor of the 20th century. Its a good thing he was cleared of all charges of conspiring with the Nazi's. I can't stand looking at this conductor but he produces the most beautiful music 100% of the time. Wagner has to be the ultimate for any GREAT opera star and she is HEAVENLY.
I always try to remember, when faced with that repulsive old Nazi on a record or a video, how many doors he opened for the young Leontyne Price, and her respect for him artistically. It humanizes him - slightly!
You do know that it's perfectly possible, even easy, to just close your eyes if you don't like what you're seeing? Especially when it comes to music, an art form that does tend to be funny that way more than most others.
God, but it's maddening to have to look at that vain, self-centered, narcissistic and arrogant conductor. Who gives a fig about that old goose-stepping Karajan. Where's Jessye?
un momento magico dell'arte di Karajan e della Normann...bellissimo;
I don't even like Wagner very much, but this is the most amazing video. I don't even like Karajan that much, but this was like being in music heaven. You can see the music live in his face, how he conducts that orchestra I don't know, they are part of him somehow. Every chord placed, every nuance, every everything. It is just amazing, I have nothing else I can say.
@TheMajikUnderwear Lets see you are saying she sucks.....hmm interesting comment considering she is a internationally renowned opera star and you merely a mean tone deaf troll.
LA MEJOR VERSIÓN, INDISCUTIBLE! LA NORMAN, SUPERLATIVA, DIVINA; EL MAESTRO, TOTALMENTE ARROBADO, POSESO, INSPIRADO; LA ORQUESTA, MARAVILLOSA. WAGNER REDIVIVO. AGRADEZCO POR ESTOS MOMENTOS TAN FUERA DE SERIE. DANKE SCHÖN!!!
P.S. I love the way he's mouthing the words as she's singing them, as if living vicariously through her. :D What an amazing capacity for beauty the human heart is blessed with, thank God.
This thing is so gorgeous as to be beyond words since even words like sublime and celestial cannot do it justice. The only thing that could have made it better would have been to hear it live. Thank you so very much for posting this amazing treasure. ♥ Cheers and hugs to you!
Karajan's face 6:57-7:10 sums it up. This piece comes together in such a way to confuse me with so many raw emotions. Brings a tear to my eye, there is nothing else like this.
A rare, rare calm and beauty are achieved. Strange that it still happens through a computer so many years after the event.
Contrary to some comments, I don't think Karajan (or the viewers) are hyping this up at all. I've seen it many times and the effect is always the same.
balanced well between singer and orchestra, as it should be. Its the one opera where the orchestra really takes over significance..HvK give his due to the wonderful Mme. Norman, but does indeed take his place..
miked not so well, as the cornet at the end should not be obscured by other orchestra music.. I was moved.
Per la mia parte, posso solo dire a "von" Karajan in inglese, - Good riddance to bad rubbish.
Immortalized in the history of this masterful piece - The way Karajan softly and quietly conducted Ms. Norman and the musicians is pure perfection and demonstrates HE IS INDEED ONE OF THE GREAT CONDUCTORS !!!!!!
The classical music is like one wild soul. Every orchestral director gave her soul to the masterpiece that he manage. If the music is from Wagner and be a great composition, Karajan is one of the most great drivers in all of the story. For know this you must hear anothers of the greats directors, like Arturo Toscani, and others and feel the diferences.
@wekunz That people were in tears after hearing this doesn't surprise me at all. I have read many of the comments here and, for the life of me, I'm not able to express how beautiful and COMPLETE this performance is to hear. Jessye Norman is really outerworldly here, simply ethereal. That God blessed this woman with this type of talent is something to behold. How blessed we are to listen to this on youtube. Again, this goes way beyond words. I'm SPEECHLESS!!!
So perfect, how he seems to be restraining everything right until 6:55, right at the perfect moment where he kind of releases the avalanche he's been holding back. Mostly I love how in-the-moment everyone is; trance-like, almost. When it ends Karajan seems almost deflated, like he's been awoken from a beautiful dream.
It's very easy to make fun of Richard. The inventor of the übermensch, while being a midget himself. LOL. Yet, you're right, he belongs to the few great ones.
@kynismos Mate, I'll tell you why people make fun of him, it's because he deals with REAL feelings and passions and the majority of people spend their lives hiding from what they truly feel and what their heart is trying to tell them. Average minds always laugh at what they can not grasp. This music is very, very special. Possibly the most profound ever written.
Beyond words. This is the first time that I have experienced a performance by von Karajan with Jessye Norman--uncomparable. To watch them is to feel that the music is emanating from him--so dramatic yet sensitive. Tears come to my eyes, too.
@bonnies1234567 Sorry to correct you, the singer in the video is the greatest of all times: Jessye Norman. I haven't heard Dernesch´s performance, but I think anyone can hardly surpasses this.
Thank you, arriagajesus, I was mistaken. Yes, Jessye Norman cannot be equaled, except perhaps Kathleen Ferrier. I wasn't sure who the soloist was for Liebestod. I feel as though I'm in the next world.
Simply incredible. No matter how many times I hear Karajan's performance of Libestod it bring tears to my eyes. I think Helga Dernesch's performance was even better than this. Her's a heart-stopper.
I, too, recently experienced the magnificence of von Karajan's interpretations and I am transported to another spiritual and beautiful place. Thank you.
You and Eliette von Karajan are so right! I only came to really know of Karajan this last April and my life has literally changed, profoundly touched by an opening allowing one to actually experience glimpses of "eternity" and "beauty" via Karajan's work and music. This uneducated and sleepy mind and spirit are so grateful.
Semplicemente eterno.
GRAZIE Olaig100.

You do know that it's perfectly possible, even easy, to just close your eyes if you don't like what you're seeing? Especially when it comes to music, an art form that does tend to be funny that way more than most others.

un momento magico dell'arte di Karajan e della Normann...bellissimo;

astronomo16 1 year ago
kalpubinc 1 year ago 23
astronomo16 1 year ago

I don't even like Wagner very much, but this is the most amazing video. I don't even like Karajan that much, but this was like being in music heaven. You can see the music live in his face, how he conducts that orchestra I don't know, they are part of him somehow. Every chord placed, every nuance, every everything. It is just amazing, I have nothing else I can say.

I'm SPEECHLESS!!!

schamade76 1 year ago
A me è sembrato invece di capire che Karajan stesse dicendo alla moglie: "E' finita", come riferito alla propria morte e lei gli ha risposto: "no, no, no, non è finita, tutto comincia...", alludendo alla vita che continua dopo la morte corporale, e più ascolto questo frammento e più me ne convinco.
schamade76 1 year ago 3

The soft not she does at 4:07 is angelic. Even Karajan likes it.

So perfect, how he seems to be restraining everything right until 6:55, right at the perfect moment where he kind of releases the avalanche he's been holding back. Mostly I love how in-the-moment everyone is; trance-like, almost. When it ends Karajan seems almost deflated, like he's been awoken from a beautiful dream.

yvesvangelre 1 year ago
@kynismos Mate, I'll tell you why people make fun of him, it's because he deals with REAL feelings and passions and the majority of people spend their lives hiding from what they truly feel and what their heart is trying to tell them. Average minds always laugh at what they can not grasp. This music is very, very special. Possibly the most profound ever written.

PUCCINIMUSICK 2 years ago
rbpenelope2008 2 years ago
Magnifico quanto sofferente..."No,no,no,non è finita, tu incominci"..."nel flusso ondeggiante, nell' armonia risonante, nello spirante universo del respiro del mondo, annegare, inabissarmi, senza coscienza...suprema voluttà". Semplicemente eterno.
GRAZIE Olaig100.
