"We are now in the grips of a meddling impulse." "Soft despotism comes when government gives a helping hand to people." "We think we know better than other people." Rahe sums up the Nanny State perfectly. Liberty dies when the people fall asleep. Freedom and despotism are born from the character of the people: leaders rise up from the nation; they don't come down from heaven. This explains the crisis in democracy today; society is losing its virtue and exchanging citizenship for subjection.
the vagueness and broad strokes which people paint with on this show about americans, universities, people, PHD's, etc. is astounding. The idea of successfully classifying all of them and knowing what they think and want is stupid and an overreach in the highest degree. Where is the supposed respect for individuals which these republican hacks say they cherish?
so his thesis is that since we have freedom...we feel inquietude and so we want a helping hand..and that as the helping hands accumulate we create despotism?
I still am not moved by the bureaucrat death panel argument...sigh...
I hope americans eventually realize that even with the utilitarian calculations being made up here in canada, or over seas in england. we still end up with higher life expectancy, no medical bankruptcy, and we dont have a fuckin multi billion healthcare industry thats poisoning our political systems. But please, "bureaucrats"...I cant feel sad enough for all the people who are going to die because of this guy.
I feel sad at all the medical breakthroughs that won't happen in Canada (or elsewhere) because there isn't enough profit in the system to invest in research and development. Who's going to pay for new developments? The Canadian government? They are going broke because of socialized medicine. Without profit, there is no money to invest in the future. I don't understand why folks don't make this connection. Thank god for the multibillion dollar healthcare system in America.
thank you for your concern....altho having premiers coming here for heart problems doesnt say much about what you have. if you are not responsible for your health/well being, retirement and job marketability...what is it exactly you are responsible for? seems to me your job is to fund government....fact is take back all your taxes dedicated to sustaining someone else and put it away, 90% would have more than they need with the ability to give charity to the worthy in their own community.
You're missing a subtle point: the depostism started with Medicare. It allows individuals to suspend tough decisions. Four out of five of my Father's doctors said that he had Alzhiemers but my Stepmother insisted that he was curable. He tried to die 3 times but 3 times the Medicare system helped keep him alive. He finally died, without any substantial improvement, cost us, the taxpayer, many thousands of dollars and his children much anguish.
@batymahn are you arguing that we should have a system that can take the decision to kill your uncle as opposed to keeping him alive? effectively, what your saying is it would have been better to kill your uncle because we would have saved money? so your ok with death pannels right?
@canadianguy0987 If they are concerned with good healthcare and education for the people, then they should push for free market solutions.

@restlys You are a subject. Not a citizen. Please get out of the way of the revolution.
