Assignment 2, watched it as a youngling and it has stayed with me for 30 years. Amazing, it has helped shaped my life. Well done to all involved and thanks for posting :D
I really don't get comments that this would be for children. This is 100 times more convincing than the bloody Ghost Whisperer or Supernatural. Lovecraft and his monsters from another dimension would have enjoyed this.
My dad had this on video I was little, and I used to think the opening narration said "heavy elephants cannot be used where there is life." It's a testament to S&S's general strangeness that I wholly accepted this as a reasonable explaination for the entire series. No elephants allowed? Well obviously you'd use sapphire and steel instead! I was about five, to be fair.
thanks for putting these up. I'm in my 60s and remember watching them first time round. Such brilliant stories as I enjoy good mysteries with a sinister side.
@MrVulcan09 It's even better when you've had your own experiences, and my wife and I have had plenty. I remember seeing some of these S&S episodes, back in my twenties. That was around 30-years ago. But these stories had less personal meaning in those days. It seems that P.J. Hammond had been inspired by a short stay in a haunted Scottish castle. Our major experiences, either separately, or together, started in 1985. We still get them.
Why isn't television paced like this these days....its all too fast to create a decent atmosphere. You would never see anything this 'slow' these days but the pace and the light dose of background music make it so creepy.....
One of all time Classics. Thanks dalek64.Watching it after 30 years and brings back the memory how scared i was. This was shown in 1980 in Pakistan.Eversince i tried hard to look for it and just tried to find out here and.... all praise to dalek !
Quality sound and vision upload. I watched this when i was about 10yo. This assignment was the finest they made without a doubt .Got the boxed sets but this disc developed a crack so...... cheers dalak64
There is a Sapphire And Steel radio show out, nothing could replace Joanna and David but the up side it stars David Warner who has a wonderful radio voice. I am loooking forward to hearing them. Was a tragedy no more of these were made, we have to treasure what we have here.
What do you mean? There's no 2.0 this is the clip that starts the Assignment 2 or the second story as in 2.1. Before that the first assignment started with 1.1 and ended with 1.18.
I just remember seeing a few S&S episodes back when it first aired.
Seeing this now shows just how much TV production has changed in 30 years. SF TV series produced today look like cinema compared to this and many similar shows of the same time, which are essentially televised theatre.
The stories are interesting, but the show would have been been better with each story edited to an hour long mystery instead of being spread over several weekly episodes.
From what I understand, that isn't really how television worked back then. At least, not with the Brits. Doctor Who was run in a similiar "serial" fashion. I can get trying at times, especially to someone like myself who is used to a neat little packaged story in an 20-40min length.
But it's still quite entertaining. It always feels like the story shall never end. And that's good, if the story is worth it.
I only watched two or three chapters, when i was 7 or 8 years old, back in early 80's. I didn't watch a complete assignment, but the show captured my attention so hard that i always remembered the scenes. 1000 thanks for posting this. I have now the chance to enjoy this entirely.
Loved this show. It spooked me like Dr who did years before but only this was a mind bender..that frightened me even more. Definately the first episode chilled me but the second episode haunted me as well. Thanks for the posting. ( Spooked? Chilled? Haunted? Even frightened? What a show. )
i remember tv show...last i saw this on tv was like 6 years ago....shame they dont show this on tv these days. PS. thx for posting this ^^ PSS. do you have manor episode here? where time killed everyone
You're welcome;-) Joanna Lumley is a great actress and this series was one of the biggest things she's ever done. I've followed Ab Fab and I've noticed that nobody posted this and as it's very hard to find these days, people should see it. More coming soon.

Is this the one with The second world war soldier in it. If so, which boxset is it on?

@cazja! Heavy elephants is right! Ever known an elephant that is not heavy! Very funny, and very five year old! Can't stop giggling at that one! x

Low-budget, slow-moving stuff with a silly premise. Nevertheless - somehow - it's an absolute classic of TV-sci-fi-noir and I love it.
By the way, did you notice how many handy uses for a wire coat-hanger there are?

Cazja: Hahaha- that is awesome!

Steel is great, he's such a tough bastard. He reminds me a lot of Avon in Blake's 7.

Love Sapphire and steel. I feel sorry for kids these days. All they got is the new crap Doctor who and Most Haunted with a bullsh*tting Derek Acorah.
