Right on. This has always been one of my favorite vids to have students watch. Give's them a good idea on radio calls, a quick pattern, pre-landing checks and someone with presumably 20-ish hours. Makes it seem "within reach" for them.
You heard correctly but the runway was not totally north and it was in fact a quartering tail wind on take off. Unfortunately in the other direction is the main (and busy) runway for fixed wing traffic so departure routes for helicopters are limited.
at one time there was an IFR trainer kit available for the R22. The IFR instruments were all driven by electric motors and not with vacuum pumps required for some of them to be IFR certified, so those R22 were required to remain in VFR conditions. With those ships, yes, the weight and CG for the helicopter becomes a much larger issue, but isn't too much of a problem for most pilots under 190lbs.
Great video chap! My dad used to own a R22 when i was about 10 (11 years ago) I went out in it a few times with him, was such great fun! This brings back good memories! Awsome :)
In the UK a minimum of £15,000 (thats doing the minimum 45 hours required) although most people will end up spending nearer £20,000 as they need more time, usually about 55-60.
yes, nzxtlexapc is very close to what i've seen here in arizona. Students will spend roughly $30-35,000 with anywhere from 60 to 80 hours of training if done in an R22. I've heard students in the Schweitzer 300 learn a bit faster as the 300 is less "twitchy" than the R22. But most schools use the R22, and from there it's an easy transition into the R44, the most popular helicopter in the world.
Yeah, I'd like to know what you used to film and get the sound too. I talk to my instructor tomorrow, hopefully start training in the next couple of weeks and I would love to film my solos.
Not bad at all. Opening turns needed some work but you got it straightened out by middle of the flight. this could just be my perspective but the touch and go approach seemed a little fast. Everything else was spot on. Your warning checks made me feel comfortable. Too many vids of pilot conversation with no warning checks in it when we all do them. Keep up the good work
Great video! I'm stying to figure out how to do a similar video. I'm hoping to get both ends of the conversation. Have you had any luck with that? My plan is to use the footage as a "post game" replay for my future students.
I believe an "ear bud" will also act as an external mic, if your cam has a port for that. Then, you can simply place the bud, loosely in your headset's ear cup (if that won't bug you, too much). You'll pick up all the radio traffic. Is that what you were wondering?
Men why are you guys landing on airfields and hold up fixed wing traffic? Whe are landing on the west side of the circuit and cross the runway when we are going to pad charlie at the pumps
The video was shot using a video camera with a wide angle lens. The camera was attached to a folded tripod which was strapped into a small rucksack. The rucksack was then strapped into the passenger seat with a seat belt lock (like those used in car child seats).

Did I hear that correctly...."northbound departure approved, winds 180 at 10"? Was that a north takeoff with a 10 kt tailwind? Hmmmm. :^)

Your video is great! I wish I can train on real R22s soon. I just play with software simulators for now.

Nice, I just did my first solo. I picked it up wierd the first time off because of the weight difference, Did that happen to you?
chopperjockey44 2 years ago
We always put some ballast in the passenger side storage compartment which helped some but yes pick ups on solos take a little adjusting.

For sound I used a camera with mic input jack and a small tie clip microphone that I placed in the second (unused) headset.
The microphone batterey was almost spent so that is why the sound quality is not the best.

aint that the truth! imhaving a hard time with slopes now, there getting easier, but its a bitch to balance it on one skid!!

Congratulations. You sound like you know what your doing on the radio too. I bet you have your fixed wing already.
Where did you put the camera? It looks like you mounted it on top of the passenger seat? How did you get it to hold in place? I want to do that too.
Nice work.
