Lol, it's called a taskbar. Windows has had it since 1995. The layout is different, but the baseline function is the same. Call it a dock, big flippin deal. If it smells like a task bar looks like a task bar, and acts like a task bar, then guess what buddy....IT'S A TASK BAR. Fact is, the Windows task bar is still more representative of its earliest version, than it is of the "dock."
I told Microsoft that I wanted my PC to be simpler, and what do you know, Mac OS X Snow Leopard comes out, now I can look at 2 windows, oh my, why is my screen all blue? 5
@onanidaily Actually the taskbar has undergone a huge transformation for Windows 7. Here's a MSDN blog post that probably over-explains the changes, take a look.
@onanidaily The developers describe their work as evolutionary, not revolutionary. They're not trying to reinvent the wheel, just make it function better. We feel the taskbar changes have definitely made improvements in efficiency and design and improve the experience for most users.
The majority of feedback from users has been positive so far, but of course there's bound to be criticism. We're definitely always open to feedback though...what are some of the main changes you'd like to see?
@WindowsVideos The main changes I would like to see ? No changes.
I have not migrated to Windows 7 (and probably won't for a few years) so I apologize if what I am about to say has already been incorporated into the OS.
Give people an opportunity to select the UI they are familiar with.
XP gave users the ability to select the "classic" theme which was fortunate as the teletubby theme was confusing to many longtime users.
@WindowsVideos Vista went further off the deep end by making simple operations more confusing to people who had used previous Microsoft OS's. (Example : Display properties ???)
Windows 7 may have addressed these issues but I doubt it.
In short, change the kernel as much as you want but retain the ability to interact with it in a fashion that helps people to be more efficient and does not require a learning curve for each new release. (BTW - This applies to Office releases as well.)
@WindowsVideos you know whats great, i can do everything a pc user can do, and also do what a mac user can do, all you have to do is partition our mac harddrive and install windows 7, so i guess that makes me a pc/mac user to bad pc users cant do this, and im a mac
@onanidaily You do realise that Windows controls over 90% of the market of computers, correct? That means that almost anyone would be using Microsoft products, whether it being a 5 year old drawing on Paint programmes, a 25 year old writing his resume for a new job, a 40 year old business man or a 65 year old playing the pre-installed chess programme in Windows 7. Translation? Of course Microsoft develops all those programmes! And all those features, too. To cater to 90%, think like the 90% do.
i literally HATE this commercial. and all windows 7 commercials. why on earth did they think that showing people with vague ideas like "make it faster" or "make it easier" would be a good idea? obviously anyone developing an OS would know that these are aspects that need improving. it if it's supposed to be ironic, then that makes it even more of a terrible commercial. lame irony.
@sterlingman i don't understand how it works so superiorly to vista? the vista taskbar shows what you have open in another window by rolling over the tab. also it shows the name for each window instead of just the symbol
I like how thumbnail previews are grouped, such as IE8 tabs, and can be managed w/out having or restore IE8, if it's minimized, and closed a tab.
Jump Lists a nice, too.
I also think it looks nice having just an icon representing a program, but I understand some might have problems identifying which program is which, and which program is open and which program is closed.
The beauty of it is that you can set the "Superbar" to display taskbar buttons in pre-Windows 7 style.
I still cant beleive that windows 7 is $120 Microsoft should give vista users a Biiiiiiig discount for their trouble. How about $30 like apple is doing? $50 at the most. Come on microsoft!!!!!!!!
I am not bitter at all. Why would I be bitter about Microsoft's poor imitation of the dock which has been a core feature of Mac OS X for over 7 years? And yes, I have heard of a TV commercial, but I don't remember there being a law which means I may not criticise a TV commercial. Maybe you are the one who should go back to school.
If you want a "YOU STOLE MY IDEA" battle, (Because why should a good idea be shared? That would be CRAZY!), it's Apple that stole their entire GUI from Xerox.
I'd argue that it's just expanding on Flip 3D and the Vista Toolbar, it did the exact same thing except they didn't condense the programs into one icon and expand it when the mouse was over it.
But the two companies need each other. It's their competition that gives us these great products.
In 1970 Xerox formed the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) for R&D, and their engineers developed pretty advanced stuff for that time, time the laser printer, and the Alto, a computer.
The Xerox Alto (1973) had the first know GUI (Also known as "What You See Is What You Get" or "WYSISYG" back then) and a mouse, a break from the command line systems of the day.
The Alto had the unusual design of having it's screen setup in a portrait for instead of the common landscape setup of today. It made total sense back then, after all you spent your day working on physical papers in the same way.
All of this was space age compared to everyone else, but unfortunatley when the PARC engineers pitched this to their superiors in Xerox, the brass didn't see the potential of the product. Although about 2000 units were made they were not sold to the pubic.
In 1979 Xerox opened it's doors to anyone who wanted to see what they were developing, and on the same day Steve Jobs and co went in, saw the GUI, thought "Holy Cr*p, we need that", and redirected their development of the Apple Lisa to have a GUI.
Years later when Apple sued Microsoft for "copying the look and feel" of the Mac OS, Xerox counter sued Apple.
When I said "Stole" I was making a play on the whole fanboy fight, but I think you know what I mean.
Its not so expensive, and thats the upgrade. It will come bundled into new machines. I have used XP, Vista and now 7, and I have to say 7 kicks them all into the dust!
the thing i love most about both PC and Mac fanboys is when they preach marketing slogans. if you haven't compared the Dock to the Taskbar you've no basis for an argument. mindless ranting and name calling is all you can resort to.
lol im starting to wanna buy windows 7 but im saving up for a mac! but i can install windows on a mac anyway so it the best of both worlds. hey guys if u dont mind plz check out my latest video. its an owl city parody. im not much of a great singer but its about windows and mac so it might entertain u. thnx! :P
it was a joke and you took me literally. When I said "I don't know..." I didn't mean i literally do not know what MAC is. I have 2 Mac Pros PLUS a new HP with Windows 7 which I LOVE even more.
So I'm guessing you didn't purchase the Mac Pros yourself, right? Because if Macs are "grossly overpriced" why would you yourself get two units of the most expensive Mac out there. I find it hard to that "it was a joke". there was no indication of sarcasm let alone any humor.
Yeah! you probably have had a Crash you just didnt notice it. It does that to mine too, while im downloading something, writing something in Microsoft Office, or whenever im surfing the net. Its a very unstable OS
the only time i've ever had a crash was once on one of my older computers when I tried overclocking the graphics too high. my pcs (laptops and desktops) haven't crashed once and macs crash just as much. when pcs crash, its usually from badly coded 3rd party software. you gave absolutly nothing to back up your false claim. all be here, i'll keep owning you all day
fyi: you're the one flaming a windows promo video, how much more pathetic can you get, you already have the ads out flaming PC, why do you have to come here to, because why? because you HAVE NO LIFE, dont contradict yourself please
lol you guys are all funny... @WindowsVideos Thank you for the Microsoft party line response but different is not always better !
Why reinvent the UI wheel with every OS release. Vista was a travesty and now 7 has followed suit.
Bells and whistles do not make things easier to understand. They just clutter up the UI and require more resources.
Stop writing OS's for two year olds and go back to writing them for your bread and butter - the business world.
