My Friends 15 inch hand reared fire eel died sometime last night. found him dried on the floor in the morning. year and a bit old ,, shame really because the ones that eat out your hand are almost a dream
this behaviour has nothing to do with the size of the aquarium. nearly all of the macrognathus spiny eels i kept tried to escape from my aquarium, even if they were only 10 cm long. I also saw the same thing happen with pikes. I believe this nervous behaviour has something to do with low pressure because this often happened when there were thunderstorm outside.
I have heard that they are escape artists, and find the smallest spots to escape from. Perhaps they don't like the concept of living in enclosures. Good luck.
Hey im thinking about getting a fire eel. I have a 200 gallon freshwater tank. But... its in my wall. like me and my dad built it into the wall, the problem is theres NO way i can put a lid or anything on it. Would it be a good idea to put a fire eel in my tank?
this morning i woke up looking for my eel and then spoted him on the floor beside the tank it was to late to save him. so good thing you got lucky and were there
Mine was missing from the tank when I got home one day. Looked for an hour and found him in my trashcan. He had somehow managed to jump from the tank, into the trashcan which is directly under the tank... And has a half foot of desk overhang that should make it impossible for it to land in the can... Stuck him back in and my dinosaur bichir bit him... So I had to move him over to my other tank. Right now I'm having trouble feeding him though. He started getting skinny recently.
@jorkey0roblox My Oscar done the same between the top glass n lid it was crispy bless it that was sad.... funny how u can get attached to fish it was so friendly too . :(
when he was young did he have his orange color yet ? btw im asking these questions b/c i just got 3 eels all under six inches 2 tire tracks and 1 fire
hi i wouls like to get a fire eel but i dont exactly know what i need so if u could comment me back or send a message about diets and tank sizes please do so thank you.
HI - he is 6 years old now and i measured him today and he is about 36 inch -
he was 6 inch when we got him and hes grown on average 5 inch a year.
up until he was 2 years old we fed him on frozen mosquito lavae then we started to give him a few frozen prawns and now he has about 8 - 1o medium sized prawns.
He was in a 3foot x 2 foot tank for 4 years .
the last two years he has been in a 5 foot 100 gallon tank but he really should be iin a bigger one.
Ya, Albino Cory Catfish. She doesn't jump out, but sometimes when she's at the bottom she'll swim really fast to the top and come out of the water a little bit.
Mr Eel in is a 100 gallon now which isn't reallyh big enough now that hes about 34 inch - he's in with two clown loaches and a talking catfish - I wont put any more in with them - im no expert but if you do introduce one make sure your fire eel is at least the same size as your goby or im sure it will try to eat the fire eel.
I have never had either of mine try to escape maybe i have to much wood and plants i dont know the only time they swin towards to surface is when they want food. in one of my tanks there is a strong current that they swin in i love watching that
Very nice Fire Eel you have, Shame your tank is way too small for him/her, really should have a tank about twice the size at least for an eel that big, but still very nice looking eel.
Hi - I know someone else who wasn't so lucky - his fish(cant remember what it was) jumped out during the night and he found it in the morning. mr Eel seems to thrash about when the waters a bit on the acidic side but it could also be that they are like cats and dogs andn just like to have a mad moment running around (or swimming in this case).
Ive read that fire eels do like the water on the acidic side but it always seems to be when he makes a run for it.
We cant seem to keep the Ph at normal and when it does go acidic he gets "burn marks" (white patches all over his body) and it's then that he usually thrashes about and we think that's when he manages to jump out.
Hi, he has done this 3 times that we know about, He was probably about 26" 65/66cm the last time he tried at the beginning of this year. The first time was around the summer of 2006 when he was about 17/18" 45cm when my wife was just walking up the stairs in the dark and heard a crash. she ran back down thinking the tank had smashed but after turning the light back on she found him wriggling on the floor.
We have heard him a number of times trashing about in the tank.
Hi, he is about 5 years old now. he was about about 8inch/20cm and about 6 months old when we got him.he has averaged about 4 to 5 inch 10/12.5cm each year and he is about 30inch / 76cm now.We have read different stories saying they can grow to 36 inch/90cm and others that say 48 inch 120cm .We have also read that they can live up to 30 years ????.
Im going to have to look for that posting again to confirm it.
lol, Mr. Eel just wants to come and hang out with you since you give him so much attention

Fish shouldn't jump if they are fed/taken care of properly.
If you think about it it makes sense.
Fish don't actually commit suicide, they are either looking for food, a mate, a bigger space, or something even more attractive.,

It might be coincidence but its usually a sign that the Ph is acidic. A bit of bicarb brings it down and he seems to calm down.
(As well as the 2 Clown loaches and 1 talking Catfish that are in with him)
