The reason the railroads don't call them SD45s is because Morrison Knudsen converted almost all of them from 20 cylinder 3600 HP EMD645s to 16 cylinder 3000 HP EMD645s (for reliability) and they call them SD40M-2s now to distinguish them from my all time personal favorite, the SD45. They may look the same, but they're not. Nothing sounds as good as an original SD45 throttling up... especially when you're sitting on top of a tunnel watching and listening to those things roar beneath you.
