Actually the XBox default difficulty level is harder than even the arcades highest difficulty level. I learned on the arcade machine and used to set the difficulty to max (10). On an arcade machine set to default difficulty, good players can play for ever.
Dead wrong. You are either lying, or you are pulling information out of your ass. Not only did I grow up with this machine in my family's living room, but I still play it today via MAME. The Xbox version was lightened up considerably.
Also, on the real hardware, the game loops back to Wave 0 after 99. The limit may by 255 on the Xbox version, but again, this version has been modified from the original.
I used to play the MAME version. The MAME version is possibly harder than the XBox version. However, both are considerably harder than the arcade verson.
There is a reason why there are two recognized world record categories for the arcade version of this game. One is Marathon, because at default difficulty a good player can play for ever. The second is Tournament, which changes the settings to 5 starting lives and no extra men. You can check out Twin Galaxies for this information which tracks the official world record for the game.
And as for the level reset. The XBox version visual display loops after level 99. However, the difficulty loops after level 255 (the same as the arcade cabnet). You can even refer to Wikipedia to see that I'm right.
Defender Stargate also reverts back to wave one for wave no 256, similar to your game here. I tried it one day setting warp factor to wave 99 as the last warp then played thru the rest. The only difference is stargate treats wave #256 as wave zero, where as robotron treats it as wave 1 as your video demonstrates...
What is interesting is you can complete the warp to wave 266 as if it were waves 1 thru 10 again.
Jonah is correct, In that the arcade loops back to one after 99.

I mean... this is level 1 right? I've seen this but never levels 250-256-1 It'd be cooler to see level 255! : )

Obviously you've never been to level 256. The game 'wraps' back to level 1 after level 255. Note the score.
