@livy1705 Thanks--Glad that you like it! I love playing this with organ (as here), but I also enjoy playing it with a string quartet (as I'll be doing at a wedding in March), or any other ensemble. This piece sounds great played by just about any type of instruments or ensemble.
@MrWader76 The slower, lyrical pieces (like this one) are often the most challenging. And, you can't hide a bad tone quality on a piece like this. On the other hand, a good tone quality will really shine on this piece.
I Play trumpet at high school, and I would love to play PIKOLO TRUMPET SOMEDAY. this is my favourite song. I wanna be a better trumpet player every day so now I have to practice a lot!
@Max45020 Well, it's different on different days, but I can pretty much always get up to at least about a double high A (right above the 4th ledger line above the staff), and I can often hit even higher notes (double high Bb, B, C, etc..) However, I usually don't like to play higher than a double high F (above the 3rd ledger line) on the piccolo trumpet, because it will start to sound like a lead trumpet in a jazz band. I do play up there though, when playing lead trumpet.

@Scarlett1b You're on the right track: You've got to practice every day, for sure. And make sure to practice a lot in the middle and low registers, very softly. About half of my total practicing/playing each day is very soft, middle and low register stuff. Good luck to you--I hope you get to play the piccolo trumpet one day.

First of all, I must say that was absolutely beautiful. I've just started playing a piccolo trumpet for the first time today for a brass quintet that I'm a part of. I'm the screaming trumpet for my high school marching band so I figured that a trumpet built for playing higher notes would make it easier and boy was I mistaken. @HoustonTrumpet You are most welcome!!!!! I find the sound of a well played trumpet just irresistible. I could listen to this and the Rondeau all day!!!!!!!! And please do post more!!!! And make sure to let me know when that is!!!!! I greatly look forward to more wonderful works of art from you!!
Thank you very much for the kind compliment. I checked out your videos, and they are really beautiful. I love your sound and your musicianship. Keep it up, my friend. I'll be watching for more of your videos.
is switching from a regular trumpet to piccolo trumpet a hard transition? if you can play the high notes on a piccolo trumpet would you be able to play them on a regular trumpet?
Switching back and forth is not very hard if you are use to it. Your high range on a piccolo trumpet will be the same as your high range on the standard Bb trumpet. And increasing your high range on one will help to increase your high range on the other. It is important to always warm up on the big Bb trumpet (or a C trumpet) first, before playing the piccolo. Also, most of your routine daily practice should be on the big instrument.
Good question! Yes, the embouchure is basically the same as the one that I use for standard Bb trumpet in the upper register. The piccolo trumpet embouchure is very similar to the embouchure used by a lead (1st) trumpet player in a swing/jazz/big band. Piccolo trumpet mouthpieces are also similar to mouthpieces used by lead trumpet players.
I warm up with lots of soft, middle and low register playing (longtones and flow studies, such as those used by Vincent Chicowicz), and then I gradually work my way up to the upper register (up to as high as I need to warm up to for the music that I am about to play or practice.) I also warm down carefully at the end of the day, and I make sure that less than 50% (at the most) of my playing each day is high, loud playing. I also try for a balanced practice routine daily.
@HoustonTrumpet im having this big comp called all valley.and every 1 in the valley is going to compete in it.my band teacher tells me 2 play loud when i play solo in the comp.do u think its a good idea?.and im 3rd chair out of 12 in my band.and do u got any tips on sight reading because thats 1 of the things they make us do.
@blackmanchris That's good advice from your teacher: In a solo, always play everything one dynamic level louder than what is written in the music, so that you will be heard and so that the notes are more likely to speak well, and so that you can come across as being confident. For sight reading, read as much music as you can. Read through some easy band method books, especially those that concentrate on reading rhythm and rest patterns (Books with names like "100 Rhythm and Rest Patterns")
I hate practicing with a mute because it feels so different and inhibits your ability to get feedback on your acoustic tone quality. Try this trick: Find a closet in your home or apartment with lots of clothes in it. Then open the door and place your music stand inside the closet and aim the bell of your instrument toward the clothes so that they absorb most of the sound. Also, whenever possible find a large room or open space somewhere else to practice.
Thanks. TIPS: Practice every day--A well-balanced practice routine (lots of soft middle and low register practice, not just high and loud stuff, plus longtone exercises and lipslurs. And aim for slow, steady progress. A great trumpet teacher can help with that also. Best of luck to you!
Thank you for your extreme kindness. After a long break from it, I finally posted a new trumpet and organ video today (Dandrieu Rondeau) and I hope to post some more in the near future. Best wishes!
wonderful job! I am in college just starting to learn how to play my new piccolo trumpet. I can definitely understand the difficulties with playing on these little instruments. Hardest to play but I think are the best instrument for a pure and brilliant sound.
Yes, I totally agree. After I first heard Maurice Andre play the piccolo trumpet as a teenager, I knew that my life would never be the same. Best regards to you!
Thanks, that is definitely a great compliment, coming from a trombone player (who is more likely to be neutral about trumpet music.) Thank you so much for the kind words, my brass brother!
Wow, thanks! That is really a great compliment, coming from you. I just listened to your Swan Lake Neapoliten Dance trumpet solo video, and that's some of the finest trumpet playing I have ever heard. May you always find great fortune and prosperity!
I'll send an announcement out to my YouTube subscribers when I finally get this arrangement published and ready for distribution, so subscribe if you want to be the first to know. My best to you!
Thank you very much. I am happy that you liked it! Practicing the trumpet every day, striving for constant, steady progress will make you good at it, and will make it even more fun to play. Have a well-balanced practice routine that includes lots of soft, middle and low register playing, as well as longtone exercises and lipslurs. Work on gradually extending your high range as your embouchure continues to strengthen. And rest your lips often when practicing--Split your practice up also.
Thank you so much! That's a Getzen Eterna piccolo, with the (now custom) Blackburn leadpipes and a custom 4th valve slide throw ring that I had added on myself. It's truly a great instrument.
Thanks you! Believe it or not, this video was recorded in my home. It's not a real castle, but parts of it look like one! The organ is actually electronic, but the sound is not bad. For a real pipe organ with some really great sounds, check out my new Dandrieu Rondeau video. I also plan to post some more trumpet videos with great organ accompaniment, hopefully in the near future.
My piccolo trumpet mouthpiece was custom made for me by Bob Reeves. It's a Parduba 4 & 1/2 (standard--not a James model) with a Bach 10 & 3/4 CW screw-rim that replaced the original Parduba rim. Bob Reeves did an excellent job of putting it together for me. The orignal Parduba mouthpiece rim is not bad (also a wide, cushion rim), but the Bach rim is even more comfortable and doesn't cut into the lips as much, even if it becomes necessary to use a lot of pressure (which is not recommended!)
My mouthpiece is a Parduba 4 & 1/2, but I replaced the original Parduba rim with a Bach 10 & 3/4 CW screw-on rim. Bob Reeves cut off the original rim and threaded the underpart for me so that the Bach screw rim would fit onto it. I plan on publishing this and other arrangements of mine as soon as I can manage to find the time, if my life ever slows down enough(!) If you subscribe to my YouTube channel, I will post an announcement to my subscribers when these arrangements become available.
For a large pipe organ with a large number of ranks, you will definitely need to have a fundraiser--very expensive. Plus, you will also most likely need to remodel your house so the pipes will all fit in it. There are some smaller practice organs that might be doable for you though. Or, you can get an electronic organ (or toaster) to practice on at home, and practice a real pipe organ in a church, if you are lucky enough to be able to get your hands on one.
Do i have to play trumpet to play piccolo trumpet? Because I really want to play the piccolo trumpet but I only played the trumpet for a year, and that was 2 years ago? And if I do, would a pocket trumpet be ok?
Yes, you must first be very good on the standard Bb trumpet before you can begin to play the piccolo trumpet as a 2nd instrument. A pocket trumpet is not the same as a piccolo. The pocket trumpet is basically the same as a standard Bb trumpet, only much smaller because the tubing of the instrument is wrapped up so tightly, and the bell is typically smaller also. The tubing of a piccolo trumpet in Bb is exactly half as long as the tubing of a standard Bb trumpet or pocket trumpet.
I want to start playing the piccolo trumpet along with private lessons and then eventually tyr out for the Vermont Youth Orchestra as a trumpet/piccolo trumpet player any tips? Thanks
I plan to get private lessons soon but i only play the trumpet i want to also play the piccolo trumpet for the Vermont Youth Orchestra any tips? Thanks
Make sure that you have a good, strong high register on the standard Bb trumpet first before attempting to play the piccolo, or else you will be very disappointed and you will wreck your chops. You really need to be able to play up to at least double high E or F on the Bb trumpet first (or, better yet, up to a double high G.) Also, it is very important to balance out your high and loud playing with lots of low, soft practice. Also: Practice lots of lipslurs and longtones every day.
that is such an amazing song. =) i was thinking of buying a piccolo trumpet. and i don't really wanna spend over $1000, any tips or advice when buying one?
My piccolo is a Getzen Eterna, which is an excellent instrument, yet modestly priced. You might also try shopping for a used piccolo to save some money.

Also, work on shaping the phrases, generally having crescendos at the beginnings of the phrases, and decrescendos at the ends.

is switching from a regular trumpet to piccolo trumpet a hard transition? if you can play the high notes on a piccolo trumpet would you be able to play them on a regular trumpet?
GLkamina121 1 year ago
Switching back and forth is not very hard if you are use to it. Your high range on a piccolo trumpet will be the same as your high range on the standard Bb trumpet. And increasing your high range on one will help to increase your high range on the other. It is important to always warm up on the big Bb trumpet (or a C trumpet) first, before playing the piccolo. Also, most of your routine daily practice should be on the big instrument.

Do you play with the same kind of embouchure (spelling? haha) as a regular trumpet?
Like a tuba has an embouchure like "O" compared to a trumpet's "o"
parkourmormon 1 year ago
Good question! Yes, the embouchure is basically the same as the one that I use for standard Bb trumpet in the upper register. The piccolo trumpet embouchure is very similar to the embouchure used by a lead (1st) trumpet player in a swing/jazz/big band. Piccolo trumpet mouthpieces are also similar to mouthpieces used by lead trumpet players.
HoustonTrumpet 1 year ago
@HoustonTrumpet wat do you use to warm up?
blackmanchris 1 year ago
@blackmanchris

@HoustonTrumpet im having this big comp called all valley.and every 1 in the valley is going to compete in it.my band teacher tells me 2 play loud when i play solo in the comp.do u think its a good idea?.and im 3rd chair out of 12 in my band.and do u got any tips on sight reading because thats 1 of the things they make us do.
blackmanchris 1 year ago
@blackmanchris That's good advice from your teacher: In a solo, always play everything one dynamic level louder than what is written in the music, so that you will be heard and so that the notes are more likely to speak well, and so that you can come across as being confident. For sight reading, read as much music as you can. Read through some easy band method books, especially those that concentrate on reading rhythm and rest patterns (Books with names like "100 Rhythm and Rest Patterns")

If I practice with a mute daily in order to avoid complaints from the neighbors, will it negatively impact my ability to play??
LivseyHawkins 1 year ago
I hate practicing with a mute because it feels so different and inhibits your ability to get feedback on your acoustic tone quality. Try this trick: Find a closet in your home or apartment with lots of clothes in it. Then open the door and place your music stand inside the closet and aim the bell of your instrument toward the clothes so that they absorb most of the sound. Also, whenever possible find a large room or open space somewhere else to practice.
HoustonTrumpet 1 year ago
Not bad dude!! You're pretty good!! Any tips for a novice like me :)
LivseyHawkins 1 year ago
Thanks. TIPS: Practice every day--A well-balanced practice routine (lots of soft middle and low register practice, not just high and loud stuff, plus longtone exercises and lipslurs. And aim for slow, steady progress. A great trumpet teacher can help with that also. Best of luck to you!

wonderful job! I am in college just starting to learn how to play my new piccolo trumpet. I can definitely understand the difficulties with playing on these little instruments. Hardest to play but I think are the best instrument for a pure and brilliant sound.

you have any suggestions or
helpful tips so I can be as good
as you? :D Thanks~
BigTrumpet6th 1 year ago

Randy.. magnificent... May I ask where that was recorded.. the organ is magnificent?
kyak1 1 year ago

What kind of mouth piece are you using.
And do you have the sheet music for this?
Midgetman303 1 year ago
My piccolo trumpet mouthpiece was custom made for me by Bob Reeves. It's a Parduba 4 & 1/2 (standard--not a James model) with a Bach 10 & 3/4 CW screw-rim that replaced the original Parduba rim. Bob Reeves did an excellent job of putting it together for me. The orignal Parduba mouthpiece rim is not bad (also a wide, cushion rim), but the Bach rim is even more comfortable and doesn't cut into the lips as much, even if it becomes necessary to use a lot of pressure (which is not recommended!)
HoustonTrumpet 1 year ago
My mouthpiece is a Parduba 4 & 1/2, but I replaced the original Parduba rim with a Bach 10 & 3/4 CW screw-on rim. Bob Reeves cut off the original rim and threaded the underpart for me so that the Bach screw rim would fit onto it. I plan on publishing this and other arrangements of mine as soon as I can manage to find the time, if my life ever slows down enough(!) If you subscribe to my YouTube channel, I will post an announcement to my subscribers when these arrangements become available.

that pipe organ is big i wunder hm it costs
88psychosocial 1 year ago

EvilPomegranate 1 year ago
Yes, you must first be very good on the standard Bb trumpet before you can begin to play the piccolo trumpet as a 2nd instrument. A pocket trumpet is not the same as a piccolo. The pocket trumpet is basically the same as a standard Bb trumpet, only much smaller because the tubing of the instrument is wrapped up so tightly, and the bell is typically smaller also. The tubing of a piccolo trumpet in Bb is exactly half as long as the tubing of a standard Bb trumpet or pocket trumpet.

yomamagottaholla 1 year ago
Make sure that you have a good, strong high register on the standard Bb trumpet first before attempting to play the piccolo, or else you will be very disappointed and you will wreck your chops. You really need to be able to play up to at least double high E or F on the Bb trumpet first (or, better yet, up to a double high G.) Also, it is very important to balance out your high and loud playing with lots of low, soft practice. Also: Practice lots of lipslurs and longtones every day.
