@Chaos8282 Not exactly - if you play this scene in slo-motion, when they duel with sticks the nervous samurai lands his blow first. Always loved that goof.
I love the slow motion fall of the dead swordsman. This is the FIRST slow motion death. There have been 800,000 slow motion deaths since then. That is why Kurosawa is one of the greats of cinema.
I'm pretty sure u can rent it on iTunes. it's subtitled, that's how I first saw it. it blew my mind.. a film from the 50s managed to do that. you must watch this before the 2012 remake comes out. the remake will probably be an American film :/ and in English. no swords and samurais, just mercenaries from different parts of the world with machine guns. Remakes usually aren't the best as the originals.. but we'll see.
The duel between Kyuzo and the unknown samurai proposes a historical episode starring the legendary sword master Yagyu Jubei Mitsutoshi (1607-1650), the school Yagyu Ryu.
James Coburn saw this movie five nights in a row when it first came out in L.A.in a small art theater. He loved this swordsman and when they gave him the same role in The Magnificent Seven he was in HEAVEN.
@bannannas5 I know you mean is it captioned on youtube...but if you get the film you can see the whole thing and it has subtitles. Amazon has it at a decent price for the collectors edition. I saw it for the first time the other day and it is as good as they say.
Japanese speaking Italian? This must be the most hilarious thing ever!

Goes down as the greatest sword duel on film, ever. Why you ask? It was as true to life as it gets people

I think it's amazing that the actor playing Kyuzo never touched a sword before he was cast in this role in the movie.

Most sword fights tend to be quite short.

How could a 1954 movie be so freaking amazing?
I know he isn't on this scene, but Toshiro Mifune is the best man to ever portray a Samurai in film.
