The song is good, but the guitar player has to go. It's not about you, asshole! Make your own fucking solo record if you want, but this shit is all Sarah, and none you! Be a hero in your parents' basement, NOT HERE!!
@bearo657 he did make a solo album...and it is awesome....don't you think Sarah had some say in this...one of the things I love about her is the production of the whole thing...stick to the studio stuff if you can't handle a live performance...
I love this song. it reminds me of my sisters and i and my mom...the hard things we went through with our father. we were never good enough. my mom has passed away. i love this song because it reminds me of how strong she was. I love you mom!!!
Every time a beutiful woman with red hair, blue eye shadow, wearing a blue dress with sparkles and a boa covering a wonderful body tells me I'm good enough.I believe her.
I am careful not to get caught up in the responses people put on these videos as they pick apart the lyrics and the artists themselves. This is the exception! Sarah McLachlan's music has carried myself and millions of others through many situations in our lives, good and bad, but the defamation that comes from some people blows my mind! I never listen to a song to see what sexual orientation it refers to, I listen to the song because it speaks to me, PERIOD! Let the music be just what it is!!!
Music is the song your heart sings in truth, it reveals, it exposes and brings to the surface things that you choose not to speak from your lips while you are concealing the most important thing in life...your true self. Happiness and truth are free, hiding behind them falsely comes at a premium. We each have our own interpretation of what it means to us as an individual. There is no reason to dissect it and attempt to piece it together somehow to everyone else. Our emotions are raw regardless!
My mother was in an abusive relationship that was very hard on my sister and i. I sometimes wish that my mommy knows she was good enough, its just that her husband was an emotionally blind man. She was a smart woman and got out just in time. Every time i hear this song it brings tears to my eyes, thank you Sarah for sharing this song with the world. :)
@lolomica every person is good enough but we have to be careful because there are always people who will make us feel worthless. we must never allow anyone to make us feel less of a person. and i think that it is important for us to be careful too that we are not being emotionally blind ourselves towards the people around us. :)
Why is technology so revengeful when people ONLY want to love privately and listen to really good music. And neither of these can EVER be taken from people's lives and neither can people's lives be taken away from them because of a machine that does not understand. People are people and donot need to be identical and song such as this song have been written and sung for people's pleasure and enjoyement...where is the wrong?
I've always love Sarah Mclachlan's Music since I was 5 years old because her music is so raw and pure Alternative/Folk Pop and her Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and Surfacing Albums were My everyday listen back in elementary and middle school and I even told My Mom at the age of 7 and 8 that I want to Marry Sarah Mclachlan lol. I first got her live Album Mirrorball back when it first came out in 1999 when I was 8 years old. God, I love being a 90's Kid because U don't hear this kind of Music anymore
Like so many Canadain artist,s Sarah has theat soft silky voice that kreeps into my dreams and my soul , she is to me what sweet love in a woman can be , I can listen to her music for days . Sarah,,,, your a gift from God
iamcasihart is giving the most common reading of the song--certainly amongst those I know. The speaker IS expressing care that seems to cross into the realm of the romantic--even if the speaker isn't quite aware of it herself. It's ambiguous, of course, like all good lyrics. But to categorically deny a lesbian subtext or suggest that interpretation is far-fetched borders on being homophobic.
this song has always brought a tear to my eyes, anyone who has ever been in an abusive situation would understand it on a very deep level, including the need to feel good enough, if a man had been singing the same exact lyrics the question of sexual preference would never have come up in this thread
Fantastic song! SM is beyond brilliant and talented! I have listened to these lyrics over an over and my interpretation is that she is talking about a woman...as in, sort of a lesbian-themed, passionate love song. Yet, SM is not gay. Anyone care to clear this up for me? Again, this song is perfection!
So, being a lesbian is automatically "erotic" or implies eroticism? I was not offended until now.
Back to my original point- this is a favorite song of mine and I would be interested to know the true meaning of the lyrics from Sarah McLachlan. I interpret the song as such: A woman is expressing her love and pleading for a romantic relationship with a woman whom is involved in an abusive, neglectful relationship.
Where the hell did you get THAT impression? I didn't mean that way at all; I think you're confusing your meanings here. In case you're unaware, erotic love is in no way an insult, whether it refers to lesbianism OR straight people. Sheesh.
Any song can be interpreted anyway. I don't know where lesbianism even comes into the wording of this song. This is about an abusive relationship-check out Sarah's video for it and you will see a woman beaten down by her husband and realizing her daughter is being taken down as well by him.
Powerful stuff.. BTW this album is on my top 10 greatest/favorite albums-the lyrics alone are overwhelming.
@gravelandgrain100 Actually iamcasihart is giving the most common reading of the song--certainly amongst those I know.
@iamcasihart Yes Sarah's straight, but she frequently plays 'characters' in her songs. So the speaker isn't necessarily her.
p.s. I completely agree with your reading of this--it's how most people I know interpret it, so for commenters on here to be shocked seems homophobic.
@mysticsmb Thank you, mysticsmb! I agree and many of the comments here do seem rather homophobic. In fact, I see that one of your comments was removed and the other was flagged as "spam." That is absurd. Again, thank you for backing me up. This is a most beautiful song & I concede that our interpretation of it is accurate.
@iamcasihart Actually, I 'removed' my comment for editing purposes, then reposted in reply to graveland, but for some reason the new post only shows when you click on 'see all comments.' Not sure if it's a time delay or what--sometimes youtube's comment posting is a bit wonky. Anyway, you're welcome for the back-up--love this song too, with any and every interpretation.
I am surprised how many videos on YouTube and their comments are being deemed anti-christian or homophobic. iamcasihart is obviously a lesbian if all the comments she doesn't like are homophobic. But then again why would I, being a gay man, be exhibiting so much homophobia. I love Sarah's music-pure and simple, the words mean different things to different people. I just don't know why every Indigo girls or sarah song is about lesbians?!?
@gravelandgrain100 Um...this is the only Sarah song that I've ever heard anyone suggest has possible lesbian content--probably because it's so obvious. Sarah herself has made comments in concert that it's about two women and love--but as I said that 'love' is left ambiguous.
Btw, being gay does not preclude homophobia--where do you think the term internalized homophobia came from? Enjoy Sarah with whatever interpretation you wish, but please respect others' right to do the same.
you are right-YOU have the right to interpret the song any way you wish. But you arw wrong on this song, how many John Mayer videos do you go on and comment "this is his 'gay' song??" You probably wouldn't dare, so why do it with this song. I appreciate your candor, but I have been to her concerts and watched her videos and never heard Sarah say-"now for my lesbian number."
@gravelandgrain100, if I may write this, this song has NOTHING to do with gay right or a gay song.Concerts attract a whole different category of people and yet people attending one particular concert, perse that of Ms Mclachlan would ALL appreciate her music, without ALL those people having to be gay or heterosexual. Does sexuality matter when appreciating a musician or head of state? Of course not.
thank you for your viewpoint. But I ask you to go through a few of the comments pages before you try to pin the tail on me sir. My comment was in response to someone going on about this being a "lesbian anthem.": It is not-for Buddha's sake go read the frigging liner notes from this album-and then give me your Nobel prize winning lecture honey!!!
@gravelandgrain100, thank you for your comment as well. Your initial comment was excellent and I did read the other comments too (as you suggested). All I did was agreeing with your point of view.
@gravelandgrain100, no need for "sorry", it is indeed sometimes difficult to differentiate someone who tries to emphasize yet again a comment you made and someone who would diminish the emphasis you had made about this song and per se freedom of expression.
I have had this discussion in past and for some strange reason singers sexuality tends to override their music. Yet again one has nothing to do with the other rightly so. Good day.
Well, King Jeffrey, we'll just have to make up for that. I f'n love this song. For some reason it reminds of The Blair Witch Project, but that's a story for another day.
"Why don't you let me take you, it's no good to go alone ..."
Simply, she's one of my favorite musicians out there. As a singer, lyricist, and her instrument-playing. There's not much left this kind of musicians these days.
Oddly, this DVD doesn't do justice to the music on the Mirrorball CD, as mentioned above, from the Portland shows. The solos alone on the CD are incredible. Either way, Mirrorball is by far my favorite album of all time.
I don't know if "diva" is a strong enough word, JeannieNC. Or the thousands of artists I've heard in my lifetime, Sarah McLachlan is the ONLY one moving enough to actually make my eyes water just in hearing her!
can anyone tell me pls what is the name of a song that has got in chorus "if a heart is not ready to smile, if a heart is not ready to open, if we make it, than i don t see how is broken"
