I remeber when I was young and worked on the passanger ship Gullfoss, routing from Reykjavík trhough Fareoe Islands to Copenhagen as an assistant bartender in the 1st Class Lounge, On my third day I was ordered to go to see the captain and everybody felt sorry for me. The captain said I had offended many passangers. I refused and said I knew manners and customers service and I served well. He then smiled and said, "You refused to receive tips and doing that you tell customer you don't like him".
What a country is working? and isnt 100% libertarian? HOW IS THIS SO?! IF ONLY THEY COULD HAVE THE FREEDOMS LIKE SOMALIA!
I never understand why progressives dont keep bringing this arguement up. When ever the right spews out their batship insane ideology why the left doesn't just say, "Thats nice, cept theres no where that has ever worked, yet when we look at Any of the countries that score better then us they have completely the opposite law, Lets do that and win like they are"
Haha this is nonsense, I work as a waiter in a hotel in Iceland and I don't expect a tip, as it's not custom here and the wages are decent so I don't really need it, however, if somebody is happy with the service and wants to tip, why should that offend me?
I hate having to tip. I like to tip good service and am more than happy to do that but it now seems like we should tip everyone. Oh thank you for serving us late, out of order and disturbing us when we are obviously mid flow on our conversation, let me reward you for it.
In your bill, the service is included thus its not uncommon that waiters don't accept tip at Iceland. Just be happy, here in America I always feel like I'm giving to little tips, thus I give more and end up giving to much and every meal becomes expensive meal.
@theicelandicguy97 Some of us do, yeah. Many are offended by it, but as it seems to be the norm with foreigners, some of us are just grateful to get a tip.
Uggghhhhh! I wanna live therrrre! I'm a server and here in the U.S. we scramble for tips... depending on the generosity of others is the only way we can pay our rent.
@knightabraxas don't worry, the US and Canada are some of the best places in the world to be a server... tipping works out better, incentive for you to sell more, and provide great service...
Their overinflated banking sector folded, but this was because it was operating on the exact opposite premise of the rest of the Icelandic economy. The banking sector had been allowed by a very rightest regime to experiment with unregulated capitalism that served only to make a few individuals obscenely wealthy. Icelanders know who these people are by name, who stole money from inside the banks as their "CEOs" and advisors. Thankfully, the rest of the economy was on a much more stable base.
I think Thom should take a larger sample set than 2!
I know people in the service industry here in Iceland are on starting wages of about 10 USD/hr, and compared to the cost of living here, that is not much. I think a vast majority of service industry employees here would graciously accept a tip, although it's far from expected...
In this context, I remember ages ago when an American reporter was stunned that a taxi driver in the old USSR wouldn't accept a tip. I'm not saying that this was a typical Soviet taxi driver, but there were incipient signs in the USSR of ppl realising that there were things more important than money. I know because i come from that part of the world
@rextrek yes there are a small number of homeless people in Iceland but as there is plenty of support and housing available, essentially they 'choose' to be (as strange as that sounds). These are people ostracised from society often because of mental health issues or substance abuse
@rextrek No we dont. He have "outsiders" who choose to live on the streets but they are more than welcome to stay in some homes the government provided for them.
Not sure if Iceland can be considered as a model economy. After all, the entire population of the country is about the size of a small-sized city... Oh, and by the way -- they're bankrupt.
@RedTory59 are they bankrupt? I am a foreigner living in Iceland and I assure you that there remains plenty of wealth, admittedly there were many people adversely affected by the crash in '08 but the people here have jobs, homes, nice cars and disposable income which as far as I can tell buys them what is still a 1st class standard of living. With 2% annual growth there is reason to be optimistic about Iceland's future
@RedTory59 Bankrupt? Hmm....not aware of that even though I live here, strange? Maybe you have no idea what youre talking about? Iceland is one of the wealthiest countries in the world and the happiest too. It´s a paradise and it doesnt even have snakes, perhaps youre then one who is bankrupt?
@RedTory59 I dont think we are doing to bad to be honest, I live in Iceland and fx there are people who can afford to buy a brand new Porsche Panamera, Cayenne, Range Roonies, Land Cruisers, Mitubishi Pajeros, live in big fucking houses and most people arent in that much trouble some are who just cant be arsed to get a job. Unemployed people here get alot more a month for sitting on their fucking ass all day long than I do and I work 4 hours 2 a week and every other weekend for 8 hours both days
bankrupt?we will never be bankrupt.it simply wont happend
btw there is still lot of wealth in Iceland. when i walked home from school today (takes about 15min) i saw around 10 Porsche's (nothing unusual). that did include one panamera (the ones that came first in 2010). two or three cayenne (the facelifted one, so theyre like one or two years old. the rest were old cayennes and 911. If you stop at red light in Iceland its not unusal sight to see two or three Range rovers
Sadly there aren't good wages anymore.
I am unemployed in Iceland and even when I had a job I couldn't afford renting an appartment & paying for food.

Þetta er ekki allveg rétt. Ég er búinn að vinna við þjónastarf yfir 10 ár og flestir ef ekki allir voru mjög ánægð ef tips var gefið.

Tipping is a choice not a need. If you get good service you tip them. If you don't or can't afford it you don't even think about it.

@24kobe24balla Ehh no, far from it if the government is in billions of dollars debt then it is definitely not one of the richest in the world.

But this is no argument for Unionization, please!
roblilley 1 month ago
Iceland has good enough unions that people in the service industry are able to make a living wage and don't have to scrape by on tips.

The first lady of Iceland is Israeli. If you want to talk about anti-Semetic conspiracy theories at least do your research first.
Also Karl Marx, one of the most influential people on socialism and thus worker's rights was quite Jewish.
