baritone looks like he's trying to vibrato the tone with his hand. i do the same stuff, as i am a converted string player. it's just automatic. or maybe he's just getting really excited. probably both. thanks nomo.
It's called a kalimba, a very old African instrument. NOMO's lead guy makes and sells the electrified version they use. You can also hear another amped up kalimba on the Congotronics discs.
OMG, Newton Concert Band, Newton, NJ, on the big drum? Where are these guys playing? I grew up around there. Sparta, specifically. NOMO, you all ROCK! amazing sounds with homemade-looking (?) and other interesting percussion, awesome horns and just awesome sound.
LOVE the groove. Hey if these guys ever want a singer Im there for them!!! There's just something about a rich smooth velvety voice and tribal riddems.
seriously... that instrument (whatever you wanna call it) is fucking awful! the rest of the music came out flawless though.. but that thing is some kinda bad. it would fit more if it didnt carry the whole song.
I bought all three records from ITunes. This is am important band for me. It brings instrumental music back into the hands of the average person. It is folk music and jazz. It is art of the Nieve and it is good. I can't spread the word enough. Please keep going.
One of the best birthday presents I have gotten yet was to see them in Atlanta on my birthday. I posted their video for anyone who is on the fence about seeing them live...
They played in Austin, TX 2 nights ago and I have to say it was the best show I've seen all year (and that's saying a lot coming from the Live Music Capital of the World) and they're the best new band I've listened to in an even longer time! Great show and hope to see 'em again in Austin!
I TOTally agree.. just caught them at Wicker Park fest SAT.(yesterday) and they rocked the Haus...er, Street! One of the freshest things I have heard in some time..and I almost kicked my self in the azz,as I didn't get there in time to hear their whole set! Man..
that horn lineup(whilst rather unusual, with
2 trumpets and a Bari sax) really kicks some butt. Lovin' the Kalimba put thru a distorted amp, too!Almost sounds like a Rhodes! NOMO..
i am telling you right now, i am pissed off my face with headphones on my head, with this at full volume and it fucking rocks, i am on my own, drunk, and i am having a fucking amazing time, so there it is, this is the best band i ve heard for ages, and i spend my life looking for new stuff cause i m a saddo, so mates, you absolutely rock and i m going to drdrink a homebrew in your honour .
I saw them tonite in colorado, didnt know they were from Ann Arbor-Iam from Detroit, and a keyboard player. They didnt impress me at all, if you like loud ,brassy wierd music, see them. It is worse than albert ayler.I go back to mo Jo boogie band.Utube the "Sun messengers" for somr real funk!
You obviously don't know your ass from your elbow. If it wasn't for afro beat ( which is the main influence of Nomo ) there would be no "real funk". "Loud"? ""Brassy"? What kind of Funk do you listen to if loud and brassy pisses you off. Moron!!!!
No use calling me names, they just aint my thing! The Baritone player is great. I listen to Grover, Lonnie Liston Smith, Hubert Laws, Bobbi Humphrey, Gabor Szabo and many others.I took piano lessons from Earl "chunk of funk" Van Dyke of Motown fame! Check the Funk Brothers out?
