The sword smith is using a process known as "Oroshigane". He is remelting the nails to adjust the iron's carbon content. It's a very similar process to smelting. The nails will melt and form a "bloom" at the bottom of the forge. The bloom is then refined by folding the steel over and over.
nails were made of the same satetsu iron sand as swords and was divided for use by the blacksmiths to make tools and nails for building. the nails are from old temples which are being rebuilt. at the end he is measuring out a quantity to make a piece of steel he can reforge into a sword he needs enough so that after the process he has enough due to lost material in the smelting. a novel and cost effective approach since he got the nails for a great price. very nice full temper on his blades.
@MrOdachi Quite true since tamahagane is not cheap and can only be made in a traditional tatara blast furnace by a tatara master using the satetsu iron sand rich in mineral content which turns a silvery color when it's at sword grade quality for forging.
@legendofcrystals i think mostly iron. I believe he's saying that the metal isn't very pure so it's a tough situation lol or perhaps really old. but yeah my guess is some kind of iron.
@legendofcrystals he says they're iron, and he says at 6:21 you can't even buy these things even if you wanted to anymore, because they don't make them anymore.
