A "Desert Island" selection for me. First heard this long ago in high school. Me & my record-collecting buddy played this over & over and howled our fool heads off.
This is a long way from being the worst record ever. What the guy may lack in talent, he more than makes up for with enthusiasm. I'll take this over any of the garbage that's been excreted, sorry, released over the last ten years.
Probably on both Salvador Dali's and Frank Zappa's playlists. I especially like the drum solo [or the part where he kicks the drummer down the stairs.]
I came here to check this out because I just read a book about Record Stores and one of the stores mentioned they used this to "clear 'em out" when it was closing time. I think I see why. :P
David Bowie created Ziggy Stardust using his name when given a bunch of his singles. They were both stablemates for Mercury in the USA. SHIT! I sort of feel sad that Ziggy wasn't a real person and the Starman ain't gonna come down.
@rocknrollroy2007 'The Ledge!' Bwaah ha ha ha! Well wicked title for him! It is 1969 and this champ is inventing punk core thrash country nearly a decade before a Scouser was pulling gurneys, spiking hair and inserting safety pins in their ears. I heard that 'The Ledge' was a one man band, had a drum kit set up on his back and a "Loco Diablo" twinkle in his eyes.
When he introduces the song sometimes he said, "Howdy folks, this is the Legendary Stardust Cowboy speakin for bugles, good old stardust bugles." Does he mean those funky corn chip things?
I'm glad to know I'm not the only person who thinks this is one of the worst records ever (yeah, OP was joking, but I sure as hell ain't). But at the same time, I'm not denying that I own a copy of it (actually recorded it off Dr Demento c1985).
I remember getting this 45 in a 3-for-99¢ grab-bag from the Arny & Navy thrift store when I was a kid - my siblings and I thought it was hilarious and played it to death. When my 5th grade teacher assigned us to write an essay about a musical personality, I chose "the Ledge" as my topic. Info was scarce, but I had the 45, so I spun the disc for the class. My teacher declined to listen to the B-side, and told me I should have chosen a more noteworthy subject to write about. C-plus!
Around 1970 a radio station in Statesboro, GA ran a "contest" in which the "prize" was a bunch of records they had but weren't interested in playing. A friend of mine one and this record was among the prizes. As soon as she heard it she (1) hated it, and (2) decided to give it to me. I, of course, loved it. Drove the neighbors crazy.
@nathanjamesbaker I actually do own the I've Been Everywhere CD that "Mountain Men" is on, and the Cowboy is definately on the top of his game there--he almost steals the show from Eugene!
The guy who made the comment about this bein' punk hit it right on the nose. This is a precursor of that genre if nothin' is. Avant-garde w/out the slightest knowledge of what that term even means. If Eugene Chadbourne hasn't recorded a version of this yet, he should consider doin' so. Won fi ylno I dluoc dnatsrednu eht 'nideelb sciryl!
a) That 45 is probably worth quite a bit, believe it or not...
b) That is T-Bone Burnett on drums. They recorded it in his studio.
c) I am not making this up, Bowie was a big fan, and in fact took the name 'Ziggy Stardust' from the Ledge. He also covered the Ledge's "I Took A Ride In A Gemini Spacecraft"
So, apparently, the Ledge doesn't suck quite that bad...he was just psychobilly before X and The Blasters made it cool.
@firestarter1101 If you like that you should check out 'She said' by Hasil Adkinsboth come from an album called rockabilly psychosis and the garage disease.

Not many people know it, but this record was broadcast to the astronauts on Skylab in the 70's,
to wake them up in the morning, by mission control (NASA). A NASA bigwig got wind of it, and
demanded that they stop playing it. Thus, this is the only song ever to be banned by NASA. No Joke.
