Merril's a blood mage which is what his master used to be as well as the rest of Tevinter and well we all know what happens with Anders, not to mention him being an abomination.

Everyone else uses blood magic to control people (see every damn blood mage in DA2 lol) and consort with demons. It's universally accepted that Blood Magic is evil, hence the original war against the Tevinter. Even uber pro-mage Anders disagrees with blood magic and considers it evil.
Not true! Merrill uses blood magic and she's super nice. You have to keep in mind that most of the blood mages in DA2 only became blood mages because the alternative was being made tranquil, getting run through with a sword, or both. Suddenly making a deal with demons doesn't look so bad, eh? Naturally they'd control people, because it's the ONLY WAY THEY CAN STAY ALIVE. Blood magic is literally the only kind of magic that Templars can't just shut down with their powers.

A blood mage that tortured him, humillated him, erase his memory and turned him into a mind controled killing machine. And when he managed to scape, has send hunters to bring him back. Also in his country there is a tirany ruled by mages. (enslaver blood mages to be precise)
it makes sense he hates them that much. even if a single one is nice to him.
I went along with Fenris. Personally, I thought he had the better romance scenes and cuz in the end, I begrudgingly admitted he had a pretty darn legit point about hating on mages haaha
