@chautreuseskies Where are you from? Because @IamJacksColon4 is right, you do have to have a masters before a PhD. I'm at uni in England and its standard here to do BA/BSC, MA/MSC then PhD. If you can survive that long...

@charlotte070 i'm from England too, and technically you CAN do a PhD without doing a Masters. Basically the distinction is that if you do a Masters, then go onto do a PhD, the time it takes to complete the PhD will be shorter as opposed to if you jump straight into a PhD. But actually it also comes down to which course you're studying as some courses obviously take longer than others to be completed.

@IamJacksColon4 Actually, that isn't that weird. Graduate school is basically either Masters or Doctorate. A doctoral student is basically a grad student who got a few more years past Masters (didn't graduate with Masters) and applied for a doctorate instead. Both a master's and a PhD would be stranger!
