He inspired millions of young people in the 60's when the "folk revival" happened. Everyone in NY City (where I went to school) wanted to play like him. The folkies of that were were into "authentic" folk music and went south to find these old timers. That's when John Hurt, Doc Watson and others were discovered. He inspired me and I'm 67 years old and still picking and trying to play like him. Bless his heart!
Arlo Guthrie also covered My Creole Belle. I find it so amazing how so many of my favorite musicians cover songs first recorded by Mississippi John Hurt. As a lover of traditional/folk music, I see MJH as the primary influence for several generations of great American musicians. IMO, he belongs in the same category with Robert Johnson.
i can hear the lyrics in the guitar notes. he substitutes the guitar notes for the lyrics at one point. someone said the mark of a talented musician is the ability to make the instrument accurately mimic the human voice. the recording of john hurt playing 'lonesome valley' reflects this as well.
@bretskie27 When John Prine was starting on guitar, his brother gave him a Mississippi John Hurt record and told him that he should learn to play that way.
is it just me or is receiving anal sex simply fantastic?

@bretskie27 I read an interview with Prine. He said he tried to immulate MJH's picking style. He inspired so many in the sixties and later.

I love this old music. America may be a rough and tumblin' place, but man, there is so much good music produced here. Two cheers for blues and folk!
