@streetbang25 Depends on who you work for. The only way you are likely to make big money per hour is by working for ABF, Yellow Freight, Roadway or one of the other big union carriers. Otherwise you might make a lot of money but if you figure out what you make per hour worked you could probably do just as well or almost as well working for minimum wage and putting in the same number of hours. Also, the good jobs are really hard to get. Everybody wants them.
Being in the military and having the pleasure of driving some of our big rigs, i know the dangers of inexperienced operators following too close, i was running an fld120 6x6 tractor with a 20,000 lb dozer on the trailer and had a junior operator behind me 10,000 lb skid steer on his trailer. a small car pulled out in front of me and i had no choice but to lock up all my axles, the kid behind me saw it late and ran up on top of my trailer, caused well over 100,000 dollars worth of damage

speedlimiters, time pressure, overtaking prohibitions, everyone is stressed out these days. stress makes you do a lot of things. i am 21, i drive a truck for 3 years now, i am not a perfect trucker and will never be, but i have seen a lot of awfull thing because people drive like cowboys, i have a great girlfriend, and want to grow old, not kill myself ore someone else while doing my job. be smart, be late and a responsible driver, instead of killing someone in traffic by driving like a maniac.
Here in the uk out trucks are limited to 56mph and if we did tail gate and get has close to the vehicle infront we,d never be able to pass i dont like to be holding cars up in the 2nd lane whilst over taking so like to get upto the vehicle infront then over take has quick but safely has possible
cuz all the trucks now days run the same 62 or 65, so some trucks don't have the speed to pass so they tailgate until someone slow up ......but in all it is not safe newbees anything can happen!
There is no excuse for unsafe driving. What if triple T had to stop in a rush, he would be rear ended, and judging on that crowd behind the guy in the blue Pete, all them drivers would follow suit.
Well, here's my understanding of why drivers tailgate. Just like in the aviation industry, new pilots, or drivers in this case, have the overwhelming symptoms of "get there-itis". I'm new to the trucking industry, and understand this completely. I want to get my load delivered early so I can get another one out of there to make the big bucks. I'm guilty as charged; I am inexperienced, but no load is worth my life, or another driver's. I've changed my driving and now driving further away.
fj1764, you don't think its hard work driving semis?? The simple phrase of "ignorance is bliss" comes to mind when I think of people like you. There are alot of regulations, safety hazards and expectations when it comes to trucking. Trucking is stressful and demanding, thats why we make good money and we are proud of what we do out there. Simple phrase to understand...if the trucks stop running, this country stops running.
fuck you fj1764, I bet your bitch ass couldn't even shift a simi. Its sad that you talk down to drivers just because your to big of a pussy to climb in a truck. Oh and buy the way I don"t drive a simi i work some shitty ass looser job like you.
trucks are the major reason for all our traffic snarls. Until they are limited to the far left lane and a 50km speed limit we will continue to have to dodge these cowboys
Tailgating is impatience, pure and simple. People in too much of a rush, trying to cram their vehicle up your arse thinking it'll make you go faster. Me personally, I slow my rig down to the posted speed limit just to piss em off. There's no excuse for tailgating.
im 17 and have had my drivers license 11 months and ill tell you why people tailgate. ill tell you why my friends do i want to work for star transport in morton illinois. but my friends when we go places always tailgate then pass me cause they like to go fast. im the slow one when i do 65 on a 55 and they go 80. LOL.
Hi. Sometimes I think people tailgate, just because there is someone in front of them. I used to ride with a person who was like that. HE could have caused an accident at anytime, but especially when he didn't want to slow down for a school bus filled with children. Personally, I think he was a heart attack just waiting to happen.
Drive faster! lol just kiddin I have my Learners permit and if you ever see me tailgatin you"ll know I have a deathwish because my truck drivin dad will shoot me
I should also add they do it here in the great Aust and get so close you can't see there headlights, and don't give a shit that if I have to stop suddenly they will plow straight into me and launch me into the nearest large gum tree. Hence killing me.
I dont think inexsperiene has alot to do with it, its probley a big factor. I have been driving for 20 years and still find myeslf folowing to close but the more driving one does the more you find yourself giving yourself reality checks, ,I have driven quite a few trucks that only run 68 or 70mph so it is hard to not tailgate cause i dont want to get stuck in the hammer lane trying to pass and slowing the other trucks down DEFENSIVE DRIVING DRIVERS thats what it boils down to.
People tailgate because they've never had the vehicle in front of them have to slam on brakes for some reason. If it ever happens I promise you they wont do it anymore, if they survive.
people tailgate because that are in a hurry to get where that are going and don't give a damn about anyone but themselves. Usually when I get a tailgater on my ass I will slow down with my jake brake that way they don't see any brakelights. It's fun, you should try it sometime
Yes sir, I do, many are so stressed by the pressure that even bumping the cruise down one mph will help them to get out of me way :) People relate to heavy traffic as just heavy traffic, traffic jam, etc. but are overlooking the obvious root of the problems, Overpopulation is a major problem
I try to create space even in my four wheeler when I'm on the big road, things can change up in front of you so quickly, and I've never had what I'd call lightning reflexes. I think the worst ride I ever took was when I wasn't driving, we were on a bus with a rookie driver, now THAT made me stress. I swapped seats with a lady at the back of the bus so I couldn't watch him tailgate anymore.
Hey Jeff.. this is one problem with trucks that are fitted with speed limiters.. sometimes you can catch someone but just don't have the extra needed to get around the next truck.and be able to pull away. it's a big problem in Australia. keep up the good work buddy.
Agreed there Jeff... Australia's big problem is that speed limiters are in our trucks because the govenment made it law to have them... not the companies...so we have no choice!
however one can use them to their advantage about burning up your hours, when I was governed too low, I would be lacking only 15 minutes to be able to make a destination that would need rescheduled, also end up using all the hours up in some weeks creating need to take extra time off, Drivers should quit taking up the slack for these sob Companies that are using the driver as the slack taker upper
that is a good comment, thanks, it has sparked a lot of ideas in me head. One thing a driver in a slow truck can do is lower their work ethics and standards to match that of the slow truck, it is a big learning curve, one that I was in the process of teaching myself before changes were made in that governed deal. My Motto is" I do good to take up the slack for myself, let alone bad and (dangerous) Company Policy" referring to slow speed governors
TTT, this is something we see way too often out here on the road. I can't believe the folks that do this. after they pass i call them on it and they act like they have done nothing wrong..strange huh?
thats what is wrong with trucking today, very few drivers out there anymore that care about anything outside of their trucks. complete lack of respect in my opinion. so whether your a newbie with little experience(such as myself), or an ol crusty salty dog like twotimes, share the road, quit your whining about everything, and help make life easier for all of us out here and not harder.
People tail gate because they are fearful of the future and only want to follow the croud. Real men are not afraid of whats ahead, they just want to see it coming!@
Why? Because they can't go around. My question is, why do "drivers" come back too soon after a pass, putting YOU in an unsafe/tailgating postion? Great vid, keep em coming.
that is the one thing I should have worded different in the video. I should have said "Driving like he didn't have any experience" but that also would have put the driver in the category with one with newly acquired experience
I believe there are guys out here with newly acquired experience that can drive more professional than some that are burned out that have been out here for a long time that need to get out of the business altogether
ummm, in the begining of the video, you are clearly in the right lane. later, you and your entorage are clearly in the right lane, with the left lane free. Do I win a prize? lol
almost a prize winner, over the years those that "think they can drive" left lots of war marks embedded into the highway with the sides of their big trucks, so the state stepped in and made a right lane only restriction with reduced speed limit for those that only think they can drive in order to protect everyone
on this type of road, there isn't a "Too Slow" speed only a "Too Fast" speed, notice all the war markings left by those that went too fast when you travel through there
One can travel what some may consider "Too Slow" many times but only once "Too Fast"
and too, depending on what kind of load and how it is loaded in or on each individual drivers trailer verses a driver driving behind that driver can be misrepresented as "Too Slow"
A driver Must drive accordingly in certain terrains according to their own load, not the load the person behind them is carrying
I think some fail to realize this and bring unneeded stress on their own selves by creating their "Own Prison" by following too close which in return causes the "Animal In A Cage Effect"
Yeah that looks like your going through the Gorge there in Western carolina and eastern tennessee...That is a right hand lane only for trucks over 3 axles or 6 wheels or some shit...I used to drive that stretch of road 4 times a week for half a year...I would hate it when newly acquired experience drivers would sit on my bumper or even better yet try and pass me when they arent supposed to be in the left lane and end up trying to go too fast around a curve and drift into my lane trying to be the
The guys a idiot, it is a every day occurrence. Not just new guys STUPID can apply to any amount of time you spent on the road. Like I like to say just cause a guy/gal been driving for long time don't means he is doing it right! LOL
Hi truckertwotimes i have been a fan of yours for quite a while and love your videos..have you ever thought of ice road trucking? keep up the great work you do and take care out there
i did that once to a 4-wheeler...man was he pissed. He asked why I did it, I told him a (ficticious) dog darted out in front of me...and that's what I told the cop as well lol
Just got back from a run from West Virgina to Phoenix AZ then on to Portland OR. Can't tell you how many tailgaters I saw. It's either inexperience or over confidence in their own abilities to stop a big rig fast, either way it's an accident waiting to happen.
The Industry has been investing in those lanes every since I can remember, in the 80's it was around $5500.00 a year, I'm sure it is more now, unfortunately there is overpopulation of 4 wheeler traffic using them for much much less cost than that
Well there Two Times....I would have to say pretty much the same as you...inexperience!! They have never had to see or be part of a wreck of any type due to the fact that someone is tailgateing. Good job on showing the world on some of the mistakes that rookies can and do make!! 5 stars there baby dosssss!!
Why they tailgate... each case is different I guess. A general answer is lack of respect to the road and traffic, and mainly a complete lack of sense of risk. Some just want to feel they are as forward as they can, so if there is still asphalt there, they have to roll over it, else it feels like they are getting back. When driving my car I don't get tailgated often, but I use to hit brakes for a moment if someone is like.. 6 feet behind me. It gets me out of my nerves.
smith system? whats that??? ya TTT happens all the time out here in california all I can do is slow down and hope they pass me. you know as well as I do even empty he can't stop that truck in time if something goes wrong.
well look at the truck behind him also.... and the one behind him and so on... and than you have the tin cup that will try and sit between them to try and save some gas .... one false move and they all get a little surprise only one that will get out will be you and the one ahead of you... the rest will up for a heck of a surprise .. but will be a learning lesson
the Tailgater is stupid for doing that! I am inexperienced but don't do that I stay back far enough to stop my truck and to avoid hitting the truck ( CARS) in front of me.....
Yes sir, I used the phrase inexperienced in the video to describe that type of driving, I do believe there are new guys out here that drive better than some of the old ones, Thanks for the comment and for driving professionally
Don't make no sense to me why they do it....The drivers that get me, are the ones you see coming up in your mirror on a 4lane hwy running 70-80 mph then they slow down & ride ur tail for bout 20miles..Truckerg
The rule I always use is what if you had to slam on your brakes to avoid a potential hazard?
Tailgating is why pile ups happen. It's the old Mississippi five count to where you need to leave a fair amount of distance between you and another car.
When going over a mountain, double it.
If you slam on your brakes guess who loses? The tailgater and everybody behind him.
You must have been going pretty slow if that many are lined up behind you. Or they are drafting like others have said. Still not the "right" thing to be doing, but pretty sure it's one of the two there.
That tailgating may work on a car, you know try to get him to speed up, but it don't work on other trucks. Now when I see one of these guys do that to me I don't worry about it because I'm always maxed out with lumber, so if they hit me I'm sure I won't feel it, but they will.
Drivers tailgate because they have not been involved in a rear-ender yet... They don't realize human reaction time, that is it takes 2 tenths of a second to hit the brakes or move the steering wheel once a stimulus has been perceived. No one has taught them the physics of trucking and they are left to learn on their own, the hard way.
People tailgate because they are FAR too impatient these days. This doesn't only apply to truckers, it applies to everybody. I think the internet is to blame for this as well. I may be a rookie.. I may only be 22 years old, but I know already it doesn't take just a rookie to do this. It takes a moron. They are everywhere. They get in accidents and don't change their driving styles. People will never learn. Can you imagine the chaos that would come from hover cars?
Evidently they didnt see that crash way back there, where the driver in the rear ended up in his own trailer, Have seen way too many fatality crashes that start out just like thie one, keep em coming T2X all the good numbers to ya from Michigan Six Pack
Left some comments for ya BeEbe DoSs!! Alot of these drivers have the lost or never been tought the "Old School" Professionalism. Alot of drivers are just steering wheel holders, and dont have the love for the road or the job.
lol give the poor guy a break maybe he is scared to pass on a downhill and wet road or just staying near you in case his brakes failed you would stop him lmao who really knows what was going on on that rookys mind
Too much of a hurry (impatient) & pure ignorance of the consequences of what would happen in an emergency stop situation! ,..........Well, You asked! knudge, wink, grin
Its a pain when other truckers tailgate you, especially if your going down a steep grade like Fancy gap,Va (I-77 south bound) or Monteagle,Tn Keep your distance!!

Here in the uk out trucks are limited to 56mph and if we did tail gate and get has close to the vehicle infront we,d never be able to pass i dont like to be holding cars up in the 2nd lane whilst over taking so like to get upto the vehicle infront then over take has quick but safely has possible
deanpedley 2 years ago
cuz all the trucks now days run the same 62 or 65, so some trucks don't have the speed to pass so they tailgate until someone slow up ......but in all it is not safe newbees anything can happen!

There is no excuse for unsafe driving. What if triple T had to stop in a rush, he would be rear ended, and judging on that crowd behind the guy in the blue Pete, all them drivers would follow suit.
chevylover9340 2 years ago

Tailgating is impatience, pure and simple. People in too much of a rush, trying to cram their vehicle up your arse thinking it'll make you go faster. Me personally, I slow my rig down to the posted speed limit just to piss em off. There's no excuse for tailgating.

Hi. Sometimes I think people tailgate, just because there is someone in front of them. I used to ride with a person who was like that. HE could have caused an accident at anytime, but especially when he didn't want to slow down for a school bus filled with children. Personally, I think he was a heart attack just waiting to happen.

I dont think inexsperiene has alot to do with it, its probley a big factor. I have been driving for 20 years and still find myeslf folowing to close but the more driving one does the more you find yourself giving yourself reality checks, ,I have driven quite a few trucks that only run 68 or 70mph so it is hard to not tailgate cause i dont want to get stuck in the hammer lane trying to pass and slowing the other trucks down DEFENSIVE DRIVING DRIVERS thats what it boils down to.
stillahillbilly66 2 years ago

Hey Jeff.. this is one problem with trucks that are fitted with speed limiters.. sometimes you can catch someone but just don't have the extra needed to get around the next truck.and be able to pull away. it's a big problem in Australia. keep up the good work buddy.
fraser5001 2 years ago
yes sir speed limiters that are limited at and below the speed limit are a danger in themselves
truckertwotimes 2 years ago
Also a great idea for a video has come from your comment, Thank You, just hope to get time to work it up...
truckertwotimes 2 years ago
Agreed there Jeff... Australia's big problem is that speed limiters are in our trucks because the govenment made it law to have them... not the companies...so we have no choice!
fraser5001 2 years ago
however one can use them to their advantage about burning up your hours, when I was governed too low, I would be lacking only 15 minutes to be able to make a destination that would need rescheduled, also end up using all the hours up in some weeks creating need to take extra time off, Drivers should quit taking up the slack for these sob Companies that are using the driver as the slack taker upper
truckertwotimes 2 years ago
that is a good comment, thanks, it has sparked a lot of ideas in me head. One thing a driver in a slow truck can do is lower their work ethics and standards to match that of the slow truck, it is a big learning curve, one that I was in the process of teaching myself before changes were made in that governed deal. My Motto is" I do good to take up the slack for myself, let alone bad and (dangerous) Company Policy" referring to slow speed governors
truckertwotimes 2 years ago
TTT, this is something we see way too often out here on the road. I can't believe the folks that do this. after they pass i call them on it and they act like they have done nothing wrong..strange huh?

Brados87 2 years ago
that is the one thing I should have worded different in the video. I should have said "Driving like he didn't have any experience" but that also would have put the driver in the category with one with newly acquired experience
I believe there are guys out here with newly acquired experience that can drive more professional than some that are burned out that have been out here for a long time that need to get out of the business altogether
truckertwotimes 2 years ago
I'm glad you asked that question
truckertwotimes 2 years ago
ummm, in the begining of the video, you are clearly in the right lane. later, you and your entorage are clearly in the right lane, with the left lane free. Do I win a prize? lol
monnalisa07 2 years ago
almost a prize winner, over the years those that "think they can drive" left lots of war marks embedded into the highway with the sides of their big trucks, so the state stepped in and made a right lane only restriction with reduced speed limit for those that only think they can drive in order to protect everyone
truckertwotimes 2 years ago
your prob goin to slow
hutch243 2 years ago
on this type of road, there isn't a "Too Slow" speed only a "Too Fast" speed, notice all the war markings left by those that went too fast when you travel through there
One can travel what some may consider "Too Slow" many times but only once "Too Fast"
and too, depending on what kind of load and how it is loaded in or on each individual drivers trailer verses a driver driving behind that driver can be misrepresented as "Too Slow"
truckertwotimes 2 years ago
A driver Must drive accordingly in certain terrains according to their own load, not the load the person behind them is carrying
I think some fail to realize this and bring unneeded stress on their own selves by creating their "Own Prison" by following too close which in return causes the "Animal In A Cage Effect"
truckertwotimes 2 years ago
Yeah that looks like your going through the Gorge there in Western carolina and eastern tennessee...That is a right hand lane only for trucks over 3 axles or 6 wheels or some shit...I used to drive that stretch of road 4 times a week for half a year...I would hate it when newly acquired experience drivers would sit on my bumper or even better yet try and pass me when they arent supposed to be in the left lane and end up trying to go too fast around a curve and drift into my lane trying to be the

Just got back from a run from West Virgina to Phoenix AZ then on to Portland OR. Can't tell you how many tailgaters I saw. It's either inexperience or over confidence in their own abilities to stop a big rig fast, either way it's an accident waiting to happen.

RubiconJohn 2 years ago
The Industry has been investing in those lanes every since I can remember, in the 80's it was around $5500.00 a year, I'm sure it is more now, unfortunately there is overpopulation of 4 wheeler traffic using them for much much less cost than that

Newfieguy89 2 years ago
Why they tailgate... each case is different I guess. A general answer is lack of respect to the road and traffic, and mainly a complete lack of sense of risk. Some just want to feel they are as forward as they can, so if there is still asphalt there, they have to roll over it, else it feels like they are getting back. When driving my car I don't get tailgated often, but I use to hit brakes for a moment if someone is like.. 6 feet behind me. It gets me out of my nerves.

cgriffin1974 2 years ago
The rule I always use is what if you had to slam on your brakes to avoid a potential hazard?
Tailgating is why pile ups happen. It's the old Mississippi five count to where you need to leave a fair amount of distance between you and another car.
When going over a mountain, double it.
If you slam on your brakes guess who loses? The tailgater and everybody behind him.

FasterTrucks 2 years ago
That's one of the advantages of going into a classroom, you get to learn some things like that without having to first experience the result.
SWIFT95330 2 years ago
People tailgate because they are FAR too impatient these days. This doesn't only apply to truckers, it applies to everybody. I think the internet is to blame for this as well. I may be a rookie.. I may only be 22 years old, but I know already it doesn't take just a rookie to do this. It takes a moron. They are everywhere. They get in accidents and don't change their driving styles. People will never learn. Can you imagine the chaos that would come from hover cars?
