  • All it takes is one clown who will not take the trouble to move his car a little to clear a path for you - then you sit there and wait.

  • Ambulances have push-bars on the front for a reason! USE THEM AND RAM EVERYONE OUTTA THE WAY!!!!

  • madison ave has the least traffic in my opinyon

  • @bobzzz23 Yes. I agree. This avenue leads to the Lincoln Tunnel, technically the starting point of the old cross country Lincoln Highway. But mostly to Jersey. That's why it clogs up all the time.

    Glad to meet you!

  • @emmfc i was in a cab arround 55th and madison at 1 oclock yesturday nobody was on the road

  • @bobzzz23 Yes indeed. It is like that a lot. Maybe Madison should be the two way bike lane instead of Bloomberg building them all over the West Side and clogging traffic. The man HATES New Yorkers. Everything is for the out of towners. They should have a good time, but they do not live here, we do...

  • @emmfc yea i live in yonkers but trafffic up there is hell but i love nyc and bloomberg is a good mayor its just he works his way so tourists can be happy new yorkers need to be happy too! 9th ave has the worst traffic manily because of bike lane and lincoln tunnel but why the hell is there bikes lanes on the west side because we have one of the most gretest subway sytem system in the world!!! plus what do you think of the muslim mosques at ground zero?

  • Would be nice if emergency vehicles had their own lane to drive in.

But if they made those ignorant drivers would probably drive in them

  • @DrunkTr33 Good call. In fact we DO have an emergency lane on that Avenue. And everybody drives in it... You are 100% correct.

  • Those f*in taxi cab drivers!! I hate those f*er's!! They don't know how to drive, prolly drunk all the time, they never pull to the right, and sometime they'll just stop dead in their lane as you come up behind them code 3!

    EMS -> Las Vegas

  • And you forgot one thing more: here in NYC they are ALWAYS on the f*in cell phone.

    Thanks, EMS!

  • well if i i was driveing and if it was a good one, i would yell in the back, its sidewalk time!

  • ylen13:

if a cop is already trying to get to a scene, then why would he STOP and give you a ticket?

And don't think ambulances don't call in license plate numbers to serious offenders of emergency traffic laws. These things are taken very seriousy, you should shape up.

  • Request to pass through is denied. Unless they are cops they are just asking for permission to pass and can't ticket you.

  • Even police are "asking permission".

Is avoiding a ticket one's reason for letting cops through?

We document emergent (red lights/siren) trips with a dash-mounted hard drive camcorder.

For failure to yield, I (anyone) can sign a complaint with license plate number and have the registered vehicle owner ticketed.

They must go to court and you must go with proof if you intend to win.

The video can be indisputable evidence.

  • Yes police are asking for permission but they also have legal right to pull you over amd ticket. Your video is nice but irrelevent in this type of cases. Ticket must be issued to the driver and not the register owner. So unless you can id the driver and get video of their face on the video, the ticket will never hold up in court. Unlike parking tickets which just issued to vehicle owners this type of tickets are not. So sorry but you complain with not be holding up in the court.

  • OMG, this isn't good. Not only am I agreeing with you Robert, but I just said the exact same thing at the top of the page where he replied to my comment. This can mean only 2 things, 1. we're both right (since we actually do this for a living and would know, unlike joe schmo here) and 2. we're agreeing on something and thinking alike........which means I have to go find a corner to cry in now, lol...

  • Actually you both wrong, you just both hope to be right and wish it work that way. You can't issue a ticket for infraction to the owner. A simple statement of it was me driving is enough to get ticket dismissed. I have gotten out of red light tickets before because it was't me driving and they had a picture of the driver, this is even easier to get out. So keep wishing that you can just get the vehicle owner fined because you're totally wrong.

  • great work what are the names of the songs?

  • I don't recall the names, but they are all in iMovie HD, which I use to edit. Thanks for the kind words.

  • I like the truck at 1:40 - very funky!

  • the largest city in the nation

  • Hmmm. Do I detect a wicked note of sarcasm here? That traffic really is amazing. Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it.

  • Some of our amblances have gotten new LED lights, but for from enough. As you say, they are too expensive and everybody knows that Cash is King. For the time beeing, we still have to aggressevly use the headlights, since white light are the most effecient.

Still, I wish we could've had several lights like in the US. I think it would've been easier for the other drivers too see...

  • The headlight flashers are the most effective signal of all.

I designed our circuitry to turn the headlight flashers off when not needed.

    Makes a big difference.

The circuit will also flash headlights simultaneously or alternately.

Though boring, simultaneous flashes catch driver's eyes better than wig-wag. (alternate flashes)

Good lights and positioning the vehicle left in the lane allows us to sound the siren less.

  • sometimes in the UK, they have headlights which wig-wag twice then flash twice together which are quite cool.

  • small, I like that sequence.

When approaching traffic way ahead, I switch from wig-wag to ALL ON/ALL OFF and it works very well at drawing gaze of unexpecting eyes.

Then I often don't even need to sound the siren and make noise pollution!

ALL ON/ALL OFF is probably the best signal. But it causes the most electrical load shock on the vehicle electrical system.

Wig-wag is half that electrical load.

  • Nice interesting music!

Is it not best to straddle the center line so vehicles on the right can squeeze right and vehicles left squeeze left.

That way everyone just moves a little but it adds up to open a pathway down the middle.

They should have a camcorder to record license plates to give tickets - only when deserved. Many drivers want to help but are stuck. Cabbies could care less.

Silence the siren. No use sounding it.

  • You have a good point about going in the middle. That's what ve learn in Norway. But on the other hand, the ambulance driver might have had his reasons for going to the left. As you say, cab drives couldn't care less, just as here in Norway. This ambulance has a challenge going in this traffic....

  • In theory, ambulance should travel in the left-most lane, (#1). But parked cars cannot move and only the vehicles in the next lane right, #2, can move a little right. Drivers in lanes 3 and 4 will not help because the ambulance is too far away from them and 'not their problem'.

Center brings ambulance closer to everyone: Lane 2 vehicles move left, influencing lane 1 vehicles to move left. Lane 3 vehicles move right, influencing lane 4 vehicles to move right.

    Constant siren is useless

  • I agree to what you're saying, but if you're not using sirens, how should the drivers further away be aware of you coming ? So using sirens is a good way of signalizing that an emergency vehicle is on the way. So when they hear the siren, and if they are bright enough to take a look in the rear view mirror, they can see the lights.

Unfortunately, in Norway we are only allowed to use blue light, and that doesn't show very well on a bright, sunny day.

  • I oppose constant siren. But you are right, brief sounds would be OK to let others ahead know what is happening. In stopped/jammed traffic I use the more musical Hi-Lo.

Yes, blue rotating lightbulbs in our lightbar may appear burned out in bright daylight. But steady-on fixed bulbs work very well.

The human eye is much more sensitive to blue light - but incandescent bulbs emit too little blue light.

I bet your new rich blue LEDs will be much better.

Wish they were not so expensive.

  • and i would still not let you through. Unless you're a cop, you're asking for permission and i ca't be ticket unless polie witness me refusing to let you through.

  • I sound our 200 Watt siren SPARINGLY.

Through two unobstructed TS100 speakers, it is very loud.

    Even louder if CP100 speakers

(Round chrome "bullet" speakers with longer cones).

Here, continuing all kinds of ridiculous sounds is useless.

Better to use the P.A. microphone and politely ASK drivers to squeeze over.

Drivers in left lanes move left better because they can see their clearances.

Drivers, especially women, are reluctant to move enough right for fear of hitting something.

  • Ye your pa would result in me giving you the middle finger and ignore you. As i posted reply to other comments, no cop=no ticket.

  • why did you put this stupid music? the scene looks pathetic, but the situation is very serious. making fun of such serious situations is reprehensible.

  • Do you mean the opening music or the track in the body of the video? I meant it to have a serious, even ominous sound. I certainly did not mean to make light of this. Especially as a person with his own medical problems who lives in the congested area. Can you be so kind as to tell me exactly what bothers you about this? I will consider any comments. Please know that I appreciate your constructive input. Many thanks.

  • I have to comment that the delivery truck at like 1:40 is really graffiti-ed. lol. And it looked liked the right side lans was moving alot quicker then the other lanes. People really need to make more of an effort to move out of the WAY!! I agree... put a really loud horn on the ambulances just like the Fire Trucks have!

  • That truck sure is amazing!

  • They should put one of those extremely loud horns that the firetrucks have on all the ambulances. It seems that when you are blaring that loud horn at other motorists, people will do anything to get out of your way. Just look at the video "Firetruck Stuck In Traffic" by emmfc.

  • Amen! But you know what's sick? There is a movement of people here in Midtown who want to have the cops ISSUE TICKETS to noisy ambulances and firetrucks! Obviously a louder siren would help - oh, my, oh gosh, but what about my quality of life with all the noise? Right. What kind of quality of life will you have if the house burns down or you die on the way to the hospital. MOOOPS, I'm with you but how are we going to fight such ignorance?

  • Absolutely ridiculous. And I have a feeling that the people who want the cops to issue tickets to noisy firetrucks and ambulances are also the ones who will go to the papers saying it took to long to get them to the hospital if they get sick. It seems that you can never win with idiots like these people. Ridiculous.

  • Hahaha, not me. I just hit my loud music even louder and ignore the siren. No cop=No ticket

  • do what it takes to get the f out of the way noone here is working together at all,, the horrors of city life i supose

  • You certainly hit the nail oin the head. It looks like the only vehicle trying to move to the side is the damn ambulance!

  • OK. Let me clarify. Perhaps in this particular situation, it was possible for people to get out of the way. What I was talking about are situations when people simply can't get out of the way, becuase there's no where to go. I was once on the Cross Bronx Expressway for 15 minutes with an ambulance behind me (sirens, lights, and horns) and there was simply no where to go. So, what good can the siren do in that type of situation?

  • I ride with my local volunteer. You cannot turn off your sirens when the patient is coding. Hell, Id put on a Q if FDNY/ST VIncents were eqipped with them. make as much noise as you can, and give the people a lights show.

  • That is fine and ejoy being behind me listing to my very loud music

  • mrderekevan you know nothing about driving an emergency truck in NYC. Drivers here are opportunists, if your don't make as much noise as you can, then you're not going to an emergency and they won't move out of the way.

  • Nice video, I can definitely appreciate the editing on this one. And that traffic is something else.

  • Thank you for the kind words.

  • like where? A sidewalk on a cross town street?

  • No, there should be an open road. In some countries they do that. It's usually meant for ambulances.

  • They should have a hard shoulder for emergency veichles

  • shut the fuck up you jackass...you cause these problems did u get the part about the person dying shit head FUCK YOU

  • It should be pretty obvious to the paramedic or EMT driving the ambulance that they ain't gonna be getting through that traffic. Therefore, why don't they turn that siren off for a while? I mean, there's no place that anyone can go to get out of the way, so what difference will all the sirens make? It's bad enough being a driver stuck in traffic for an hour or more, and then you gotta have a siren blasting in your ear the whole time! It's so annoying!

  • Because if you turn the siren off, people will think you've stopped responding and therefore not try to get out of your way. I have a very sound theory when it comes to sirens and traffic: Be as annoying as possible, and they'll want to move out of your way as fast as possible....

  • Lmao.

  • I promise you, i don't care about how loud you make it. I will turn up my music and you will be stuck behind me till you either get around me or i decide to move out your way. Unless you're a cop, you can't give me a ticket.

  • You're right, we can't give you a ticket. HOWEVER, the officers that we have radio contact with can. All we need to do is give them your license plate number, make model and color of the vehicle, and a small written statement, and you'll be getting a ticket in the mail. Or, if an officer sees you, he'll just pull you over right there.

Then there's the fact that WE ARE FUCKING TRYING TO SAVE PEOPLE'S LIVES! That's why we have lights and sirens in the first place.

  • No i will not be getting the ticket in the mail and let me explain why. A ticket is issued to the driver and not the owner of the vehicle. As such you will either need to have cops pull me over and issue me a ticket or being able to id me and get my face on video so you can id me in court as proof. Just plate of the car, statement, and description of the vehicle is not enough. Unlike parking tickets, yo can't just ticket register owner for failure to yield to emergency vehicles. Nice try .

  • Trust me, I've seen it happen...you're right, they can't guarantee it was the owner of the car who was driving, so it's up to the owner to figure out who was driving their car and get money from them.

But like I said, we're trying to save people's lives. Have you ever heard of the guy who purposely got in an ambulance's way as it was heading to the hospital, only to figure out it was his wife in the back, and she died because of the delay? Funny story actually....

  • Oh i am sure an officer will try to issue at ticket but this type of ticket carries points and you and asses points on the owner. Also a simple statement of it wasn't me driving is enough to get ticket dismissed. After this is an infractio ticket and not just a parkig ticket so you can't force an owner to pay up. Basically this is not vehicle violating the law, its an actuall driver.

As for who you trying to save etc, i don't give a crap.

  • Gosh, you're stupid.

  • Why am I stupid? If you're going to call me that, at least back it up with some reasons...

  • Moron
