actually, the original is in yiddish, an offshoot of hebrew, but heavily influenced by german. Most speakers of german will actually be able to understand 80-90%. It's likely that it was made early on in a province that was originally german and throughout the numerous conflicts over territory fell into ownership by Russia, and hence is where the russian claim comes in.

By the way, Yiddish is a dialect of German/Hebrew/Polish and Russian spoken by the Ashkenazim of Central and Eastern Europe and Ladino is a form of Castilliano Spanish and some Hebrew and probably a few minor dialects as well spoke in the Court of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella when those two HATERS threw all of the Jews out of Spain in 1492!
