What I love about watching this clip is that there are loads of young children and even grand-children who have no idea how original Mummy or Gran Dad were in the late 70s... and how they did it all before you were even thought of...
Nice to have a great comment from a fellow North Wales soulie....quite envy you the chance to work in Thailand and Wales....... Keep me in mind if you have any jobs going... lol ;-)

I'm 50, live in France & still listen to Northern on a daily basis.
One cold, snowy Sunday morning in Jan 77, we were heading back to Pembroke after a Sat night at the Casino, 7 of us in an old Austin Maxi listening to tunes on an old Philips cassette player enjoying the memory of the previous night. Next thing, the car slid on black ice & we hit a tree head on. Fortunately no one was seriously injured, we all lived to tell the tale :-) It was a special night & another special memory. KTF
If you have never been there its so hard to explain just what a experience it was.....seeing these clips of Wigan again brings back the push to get in the doors....the heat, the smell of the crowd, but most of all the excitement, the pounding floor.....everyone lost in there own world of music and feeling. I was only about 17, but never will i forget and the northern soul music and the songs that still haunt me to this day.......still keepin the faith!!!! x
bloody gutted that i wasn't around back then:/ would have loved to go to wigan, i can't understand how people are saying that Northern has gone out of fashion, i'm 15 and i absoloutley love Northern!
AS one comment above it truly was a great magic time so glad I lived through it had so much enjoyment close to heaven on the dance floor with great music in the ears great people all around and dancing feeling the music all through me to my feet! the bizz your vid brings back fantastic memorys thanks a lot... Neil
I was into UK soul and Mod stuff in London in the late 70s ; the likes of High Tension, Freeez, Light of the World. We used to see 'Northern Soul' boys at Chelsea FC matches with their weird fashions and have a bit of a laugh.
Now I'm into the Northern Soul scene, but feel like a 'band wagon' jumper. Anything that becomes over exposed for the real fans loses its' meaning. I hope this doesn't happen for a second time to the Northern Soul Scene which is about REAL people and REAL lives. KTF!
I never get tired of looking at this old stuff from the Casino. We used to travel from North Wales and "Bunk the train" .There was just a small group of us, and the local people in our towns and villages thought we were all weird.....but WTF .
It shows how great this music was, and still is, as we all meet up in Prestatyn and Aerospace club in Broughton still after all these years.
@soulboy111 Every now and then when i feel a bit down i sit down and remember all those great nights where everyone was of one mind and we were all lost in the music.dancing with your favourite girl, remember the Brut aftershave.

@shabbafrog - You could say that I suppose... The love of some of the best times of our lives... Youthful, innocent, and genuine adoration of the music and the fond memories of the friends that we made along the way...

I on it, 2nd from the left at 2'5". Warrington Station, a saturday morning in 1978 (I think). 17 then, 49 in two weeks. Anybody else want to identify themselves?
Only just discovered this genre. I'm trying to fathom it out. It seems to be black music followed by the white man. Am I right? Who's the Godfather(s) of Northern Soul? The person I know who's into this stuff is a die hard Mod! This music doesn't seem to tally up with dude I know. What am I missing?????????
There is a saying amongst the Northern Soul fraternity... "If I have to explain it - you would not understand" It is very much a case of, you had to be there to be part of it. In other words touched by the music in a special way... ;-)
Oh so true, living in London and going up North at weekends was soemthing my London mates could never fathom so I gave up trying. It was very much their loss.
Nice comment, im a Derbyshire guy, had fantastic of Wigan, Blackpool, Stoke, the Music was "felt", just a shame that chalkies and blues jaded some minds eh
@clearviewmind 99% correct - Some of the "Sounds" played at Northern Soul venues were actually by white artists Niteowl45 has a point - You probably did have to be there to get that feeling, but if you want to learn more about the genre then the Godfathers are:
Ian Levine, Tony Jeb, Les Cockell & Colin Curtis, from Blackpool Mecca.
I don't go as far back as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester so, to you Grandfathers who I have missed, I appologise.
Northern Soul`s roots are clearly defined as `Mod`in any `history of Northern Soul` so not sure why our friend can`t "fathom it out"
`Godfather of Soul` would be James Brown or Otis Redding or Marvin Gaye so the `Northern` equivalent would be Frank Wilson or Roy Hamilton etc, certainly not Ian Levine who, it is widely accepted, has done more damage to the scene than good. I`m a Mancunian who lives down South now but feel very alone in my musical tastes. THAT`S why it`s called Northern Soul
@clearviewmind Northern Soul = Obscure (mostly) Black American vinyl records, first found in Liverpool. The discs were used as ballast for Trans-Atlantic ships, that were scrapped in Liverpool. Discs found and played (They liked the sound) That's how it all started.
Big genre crossovers into Scooterists, Mods, even Skinheads.
Still Internationally very popular. Very big in Austrailia.
hi,,this is glen,,you sent me this track some time ago,,i owe you big time for that,,sadly my daughter deleted it by mistake,,i just wondered if you have the time, would you send it again, dont mind if i pay for your time and trouble,,thanks,,GW
Top tune, Just got back from Blackpool, top weekend, for those who dont get it, Its a way of life, OUR'S and its so so good !!, It must be to keep us here 30 years later lol.roll on new years eve Stoke KTF .
i think you will find that the Northern soul Scene is stronger now than it ever was ...google northern soul for your nights out there going on all over the place ..kings hall stoke is the new wigan casino .2,000 people there some nights
Belfast all dayers 84 to 87 , delta club . Thems was the days . Hadnt been to a northern soul club for about 15 years until one night in berlin a few years ago when i was half pissed . Foolishly attempted the old moves for about an hour . All went well until i tried to walk home and the fact id been using specific leg muscles i hadnt used since i was a teenager hit home...cramped up like a bastard . Had to cling onto lamp posts to walk.. bemused and worriedgermans looking at me strangely...errr
probably met you quite a few times!! Was a regular between 83 - 86 at the Delta. Still go to a few do's down here in Oz, joint soul club between Brisbane and Gold Coast. They alternate the last Saturday of each month, and do the odd weekender as well
somewhere in the loft i have some great singles... 'Your ready Now' Sliced Tomatoes' Out on the Floor' and old fav ... What! followed by a true classic Do i love you.... indeed i do! so just rediscovering it all.. i would love to find out if there are any allnighters still going strong... where's me Talc lol
a mass of memories... mine started back in 1975 also as a16 yr old finding his roots in music and dancing for the first time ever!! lol I kept the faith for many years donning the Spencers bags with all its crown flaps and sharply ironed creases and polyveldt shoes.. Fred perry shirts and shetland wool v neck jumpers in red followed by a glorious long black leather coat!!
to mkcasual lstarted going in 76 at the age of 15 i,m 48 now i still love the music now as the first night i walked up those stairs and heard it .the sceane needs young people like to cary it on ktf qam uk
1st got into the Northern Scene in 82. And have to admit even after 27 years I still cant get enough of it. A room full of people all smiling, dancing and know instinctively when to clap in unison. Certainly top form. And as Miss Yuro said "It'll never be over for me"
Can't believe I was stuck in Detroit (of all places) in the 70's. We had nothing like the Casino, and already moved to disco, and nothing with the spirit and vitality that the Northern Soul movement had in Britain. We may have created the sound, but you guys sure knew what to do with it. I want to turn back the clock and emigrate.
the american music scene went down hill with the fall of radio big stations killed creativity. the 1980's usered in MTV were an artist had to have a music video. now american music scene sucks american idol rap music uterly destroyed the music in america sounds like shite!
the music and artists were americani'll grant you that, its just a pity the yanks didn't know what to do with it !we in the u.k appreciated them far more than their fellow countrymen did ensuring that many a career was rescued thanks to its popularity over here
hi blaxwax, cheers for that buddy,some-one had to put the record straight, soul be it northern/southern/deep or whatever, is one american import i will always be grateful for,i'm not too keen on what followed though RnB/ rap what the hell went wrong there i have no idea, creativity and soul and talent went out of the window i don't think i'm alone in thinking this !!.
Wigan was the so called HEART of the Northern soul scene ,but it wasnt the be all and end all.(Torch ,Wheel,Stars and stripes in yate.)cmon lets just embrace the fact that back then it was frigging HUGE!!!.
hey cornish(i take it your from the westcountry?) there was a semi allnighter (it finished at 4 am)2 weeks ago3/8/09. at the voodoo lounge in plymouth,a great crowd + great sounds it felt just like i remembered 35 odd years ago, hopefully this wont be the last
I came here coz of a comment made about a Sweet video about the dancing, and reminded the folk that this was also the days of Northern Soul. I was to young to go but do remember special buses put on to take the older kids to Wigan for Satuarday night - Loved the dance moves they brought back with them. circa 72 - 75
Look, there's a lot of b*****cks floating around about what club you went to. Did you get down to the music?? Did it stir something insde you??, welcome to Northern Soul.
nivviz, check your times and dates......wigan to plymouth.... WOW.. youe spent more time on the road than on the dance floor.
I was to young for the northern soul scene and although a big heavy rock fan i also like soul. An old friend of mine's sister and brother and their friends from Liverpool and Manchester did go to Wigan Casino in the late 1970's, i can appreciate the music and would have loved to have sampled some of the atmosphere in them days.
The Late 70s at the casino were rubbish in comparison to the earlier years of The underground scene, once the doors had opened to cameras and media the soul scene was murdered by the very people that alledgedly loved it but sold out for cash (djs)
The scene was also invaded by shite unsold / unreleased failed pop music in an effort to keep people on the dance floor.
Even some djs were making there own records in an effort to cash in
Well said 'jeboysvw'. Wigan post-1975 was chock full of divs and hangers-on who had read about it in the tabloids. These are largely the same people who get so misty-eyed about Wigan today (many of whom still can't tell a real Soul record from bloody Helen Shapiro!), but propaganda about Wigan Casino being the "Heart of Soul" is endemic, particularly on Youtube.
Thats not the one . the guy i was on about came from n wales, colwyn bay i think he used to buy and sell records in the room at the back of the dance floor.. cheers
yep dr watson i went to a place called the casino club, aint gotta clue where it was i just used to stick my thumb out by the m1 at hemel hempstead on a saturday and hey presto i arrived at the casino club.
Blackpool Mecca, Twisted Wheel Manchester, Winter Gardens Cleethorpes, The Golden Torch Stoke on Trent,Cattacoombes Wolverhampton, Samantha's Sheffield,100 club London,Mojo club Sheffield,Nottingham Palais... and many many more........
There's a saying that "once you've tasted champagne you never go back to wine". This thread is about "How it was" referring to the Casino Club not anywhere else. I would spend Saturday nights at either Blackpool or Blackburn MECCA and then on to the Casino. Spent time at Nottingham and Stoke, even Scamps and the Penthouse Suite in Plymouth which played some great Northern Soul back in the 70's. My point is that whilst the music was fantastic wherever I went there was nowhere better than Wigan.
Let's get it right. The thread is titled "Northern Soul - How It was" and in the description it states "Images, scenes and people from the Northern soul scene and the days of Wigan Casino", ie Sept 1973 - Dec 1981. Which is why some of the images are not of Wigan. Blackpool, Stoke etc etc, am I supposed to be impressed or summat. Whilst the atmosphere at Wigan was exceptional it was just one club albeit a very important one however after 1975 the music was better elsewhere IMO.
jets was next to the 2 trees pub,the 1.50 club was around the back, jets was ok as long as you took your own northern stuff, the dj was a guy called john bettey he prefered funk,he wasnt happy when saturday night fever reared its ugly head, the management insisted on instaling podiums all around the dance floor to allow the travolta lookalike saddoes to strut their stuff they were removed when one of the numpties fell off and broke his arm,one of the 1.50 dj's was a torpoint lad called len hardy
Hi, can anyone help? I know that the tune playing is Little Anthony, but does anyone know if its a single or album track? If its an album track, which one? Many thanks Sue

There is a saying amongst the Northern Soul fraternity... "If I have to explain it - you would not understand" It is very much a case of, you had to be there to be part of it. In other words touched by the music in a special way... ;-)

Great reply! Thank you very much for that.

Oh so true, living in London and going up North at weekends was soemthing my London mates could never fathom so I gave up trying. It was very much their loss.

Nice one Niteowl145. I shall have a butchers.
clearviewmind 2 years ago
@clearviewmind 99% correct - Some of the "Sounds" played at Northern Soul venues were actually by white artists Niteowl45 has a point - You probably did have to be there to get that feeling, but if you want to learn more about the genre then the Godfathers are:
Ian Levine, Tony Jeb, Les Cockell & Colin Curtis, from Blackpool Mecca.
I don't go as far back as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester so, to you Grandfathers who I have missed, I appologise.
PS. check out Dave Goddin from Soul City Records.

I want to turn back the clock and emigrate.

the american music scene went down hill with the fall of radio big stations killed creativity. the 1980's usered in MTV were an artist had to have a music video. now american music scene sucks american idol rap music uterly destroyed the music in america sounds like shite!

johnny9148 2 years ago
the music and artists were americani'll grant you that, its just a pity the yanks didn't know what to do with it !we in the u.k appreciated them far more than their fellow countrymen did ensuring that many a career was rescued thanks to its popularity over here

hi blaxwax, cheers for that buddy,some-one had to put the record straight, soul be it northern/southern/deep or whatever, is one american import i will always be grateful for,i'm not too keen on what followed though RnB/ rap what the hell went wrong there i have no idea, creativity and soul and talent went out of the window i don't think i'm alone in thinking this !!.

I was to young for the northern soul scene and although a big heavy rock fan i also like soul. An old friend of mine's sister and brother and their friends from Liverpool and Manchester did go to Wigan Casino in the late 1970's, i can appreciate the music and would have loved to have sampled some of the atmosphere in them days.
fletch00001 3 years ago
Make sure you are not influenced by lies,
The Late 70s at the casino were rubbish in comparison to the earlier years of The underground scene, once the doors had opened to cameras and media the soul scene was murdered by the very people that alledgedly loved it but sold out for cash (djs)
The scene was also invaded by shite unsold / unreleased failed pop music in an effort to keep people on the dance floor.
Even some djs were making there own records in an effort to cash in
jelboysvw 3 years ago 2
Well said 'jeboysvw'. Wigan post-1975 was chock full of divs and hangers-on who had read about it in the tabloids. These are largely the same people who get so misty-eyed about Wigan today (many of whom still can't tell a real Soul record from bloody Helen Shapiro!), but propaganda about Wigan Casino being the "Heart of Soul" is endemic, particularly on Youtube.

Why would anyone want to go anywhere other than Wigan, KTF
nizviz 3 years ago
Because the Northern scene was bigger than just Wigan alone.
deamster10 3 years ago
There's a saying that "once you've tasted champagne you never go back to wine". This thread is about "How it was" referring to the Casino Club not anywhere else. I would spend Saturday nights at either Blackpool or Blackburn MECCA and then on to the Casino. Spent time at Nottingham and Stoke, even Scamps and the Penthouse Suite in Plymouth which played some great Northern Soul back in the 70's. My point is that whilst the music was fantastic wherever I went there was nowhere better than Wigan.
nizviz 3 years ago
Let's get it right. The thread is titled "Northern Soul - How It was" and in the description it states "Images, scenes and people from the Northern soul scene and the days of Wigan Casino", ie Sept 1973 - Dec 1981. Which is why some of the images are not of Wigan. Blackpool, Stoke etc etc, am I supposed to be impressed or summat. Whilst the atmosphere at Wigan was exceptional it was just one club albeit a very important one however after 1975 the music was better elsewhere IMO.
deamster10 3 years ago 2
How silly of me to POST an inacurate comment, IMO you're probably right, please forgive me for having an opinion KTF

hey nizwiz did you ever go to the 1.50 club in plymouth above jets discotheque in union street plymouth?circa 76-78
layorseniram 2 years ago
layorseniram, can't remember 1.50 club, where on union st was jets? may have been there in a drunken haze.
nizviz 2 years ago
jets was next to the 2 trees pub,the 1.50 club was around the back, jets was ok as long as you took your own northern stuff, the dj was a guy called john bettey he prefered funk,he wasnt happy when saturday night fever reared its ugly head, the management insisted on instaling podiums all around the dance floor to allow the travolta lookalike saddoes to strut their stuff they were removed when one of the numpties fell off and broke his arm,one of the 1.50 dj's was a torpoint lad called len hardy
