When you've got a sentence in Finnish, are cities and lands with a capital letter?

  • @Ipodmoeilijk Yes, only proper nouns are, but for example months and weekdays are not, not even holidays like Christmas or nationalities or languages, all start with small letters in middle of the sentence.

Well for us english way to pronounce Wales is like "Weills" so we use that or some people might also read it in finnish pronouncing way which is kinda like "Va-les" Lol sry best i can do xD

  • I don't get it =S

  • @ChantelloTheWolfFan You don't get what...?

  • Why would you want to change the way you say countries and change the spellings ??

  • @ChantelloTheWolfFan Hmm, do you mean Suomi -> Suomessa? And Venäjä -> Venäjällä... Or what?

  • Everything, you just talking into a different language or something , or making things up ?

  • I don't get it =S

  • also I very like yours "R" sound in finnish :)

  • @liteal *your

  • "Alanko" is mean "lowland" and "maa" is "country" :) Is so interesting..."Alankomaat"

    ----

    Minä asun Venäjälla.

    Sinä asut Suomella.

    ---

hi-hi. I wrote this without a dictionary. Thank you maestro :)

  • @liteal Correction:

    Minä asun Venäjällä.

    Sinä asut Suomessa.

Yeah it's true, Finnish R is verrrry strrrrong... :)

  • @inFinnish

    Yes, 10x )

Venäjälla it was misprint. (I am not accustomed to use "ä" "ö" :))

and Suomella was error, yes :)

    thanks alot :)

..I'm going to read a textbook.

  • @inFinnish Hmm, as far as I know "Venäjällä" is the only case when talking about a country to (for example) live "in" and using the -lla/-llä case (literally: "on"), all of the other countries need -ssa/-ssä (accordint the vowel harmony, literally: "in"). Is this correct? Or any other country? However about cities/villages the situation is much harder, and someone must learn these one by one. Interesting: Hungarian has the very same issue with the very same noun cases :D

  • @lgblgblgblgb Well, there are few others like Norsunluurannikko -> Norsunluurannikolla, Kypros -> Kyproksella, Malediivit -> Malediiveilla, Filippiinit -> Filippiineillä etc., but not many, all the others end with ssa/ssä.

  • "Yhdys/Yhdis" means united? Because this word is present in United States of America and United Kingdom. Better: what literally means "Yhdysvallat" and "Yhdistynut Kuningaskunta"?

And in venäjä, why the first ä is sounding more like "e" than "ae" (as in äiti)? ä will only sound as "ae" at the begining and at the end of a word?

So sad, my country wasn't there... I'm from Brazil, "Brasilia", which is funny because Brasilia is the capital of Brazil. :D

  • @brunnaplacido Thanks a lot for all your comments and questions!

"Yhdys" and "Yhdistynyt" literally means United, you are right on that. Both Ä's in the word "Venäjä" should sound the same. Finnish is a very solid language and the pronunciation never really changes, so if it's Ä or Ö or whichever letter it should always sound the same. :)

This was part 1, so im sure Brazil will be in the next one. ;-)
