Good video. I would like to see a slower version with more detail and explanation about the tools and how to use them. You have great skills which that most of use would benefit from learning.
I have heard the feedback to slow things down from others. I struggle to balance teaching with showing the whole work cycle. To balance this I recently made a video where I do all the explaining 1st (tools, approaches) and then did the sped up video.
Check out "Hand Carved Wooden Bowl V - Salad". I would be happy to explain any detailed questions you may have.
@QueticoChris Thank you for your reply. I look forward to seeing your other videos. In the near future we hope to move to a larger homestead with timber to work with and my family and I are interested in learning to process logs with hand tools like you did in this movie and learning how to use a hewing axe/hatchet. Thanks Paul.
I am BLOWN AWAY by this vid. I've spent the last several months collecting old woodworking tools (broadaxe, draw-knife, bowl adze, scrub plane ect.) to do these exact sorts of projects. I can't believe you did all that hewing without a forged log dog or something. THe combination you did with the shave horse, bench, and saw horse is truly brilliant. Can't believe I wasted all that time making them individually! I will subscribe, and like previous comments as you are my hero too.
Thanks for the compliment and for subscribing. I should have used a log dog because the piece kept slipping. The benefit of video is I was able to edit it out. Check out "Hand Carved Wooden Bowl V" where I use all the tools you describe and my bench. Good luck with your projects and post a video of your work!
@QueticoChris Heh Yeah I'll post a vid when I have a bowl worth posting. (And a video camera) Is That a sort of Pipe clamp you used in the bench for bowls? I also noticed you got those nice Hans Karrlson gouges. The curing info with the bowls was great too. Maybe my next attempt won't check so badly now. :D
Amazing Chris. Your abilities amaze me. You also have quite the collection of tools. I'm envious. Where do you find most of your vintage tools? I have trouble finding quality historic tools (the fact that I live smack dab in the middle of Toronto probably doesn't help. The broad axe is a beautiful piece.
Have you produced plans for your hewing bench/shaving horse?
I flattened the logs with a broad axe. This one is probably 100+ years old with a wide blade and a bent handle so I don't crunch my knuckles when I am using it. I can look for one if you like and send one to you.
@QueticoChris Thanks for that, I haven't heard of, or seen, a broad axe before. As to finding one for me, no thanks. I have chronic health problems and have very little strength so power tools are the way to go for me. But in my early years I worked with hand tools and loved the feel of them.
Hi, Wonderful video. I've used it to welcome the 21,000th friend at Natural Homes on facebook. I hope this brings you more fans, you deserve them. Regards, Oliver
Great video. I found the accelerated parts to be humorous. The noise of the hewing got me going. Oh, and inspiring, now if I only had a tree to fell and make a bench out of.
No doubt this was more for entertainment value vs. teaching. I will definitely do a teaching video in the future but I just can't resist the fast movement and music.
In the song, Townshend sings about the delusions and drug use of the wealthy and hedonistic. The lyrics describe a party in which people hide from their problems behind a façade. Townshend has introduced the song in live performances with: "This song is about what happens when you take too much white powder; it's called Eminence Front".
Chris, if we ever run out of oil in the future, I'm coming over lol! You make it look so easy, you're really at home with this form of woodworking, truly awesome mate. I will be using some of your joinery techniques on my current and future projects. Good to see your videos again!
Subbed directly. Thank you for your skills and the sharing of it!!!!

Yes - its an old fashioned clamp and I added some sharp points in the end to hold the wood better. Good luck!

Is that an adze you're using to flatten the logs? I've not seen one that shape before.
Tamaresque 1 month ago
@Tamaresque The 'shaving horse'; how does that stop the wood flying into your chest?
Maybe you should say in the description what tools you use, what you're making and how to use them, then I won't be asking so many questions. :-)

@Tamaresque What sort of timber are you using? Is it a softwood?
