  • @Rhinoch8

Thanks for the nice comments and thanks for subscribing. I hope you enjoy all my videos.

    Chris

  • Good video. I would like to see a slower version with more detail and explanation about the tools and how to use them. You have great skills which that most of use would benefit from learning.

  • @pocketsofthefuture

I have heard the feedback to slow things down from others. I struggle to balance teaching with showing the whole work cycle. To balance this I recently made a video where I do all the explaining 1st (tools, approaches) and then did the sped up video.

Check out "Hand Carved Wooden Bowl V - Salad". I would be happy to explain any detailed questions you may have.

    Chris

  • @QueticoChris Thank you for your reply. I look forward to seeing your other videos. In the near future we hope to move to a larger homestead with timber to work with and my family and I are interested in learning to process logs with hand tools like you did in this movie and learning how to use a hewing axe/hatchet. Thanks Paul.

  • Your crazy... I love it.

  • @itsmenckgonzalez

There is a thin line between passion and mental illness and I cross that line occasionally :).

    Chris

  • I am BLOWN AWAY by this vid. I've spent the last several months collecting old woodworking tools (broadaxe, draw-knife, bowl adze, scrub plane ect.) to do these exact sorts of projects. I can't believe you did all that hewing without a forged log dog or something. THe combination you did with the shave horse, bench, and saw horse is truly brilliant. Can't believe I wasted all that time making them individually! I will subscribe, and like previous comments as you are my hero too.

  • @mattythepirate1

Thanks for the compliment and for subscribing. I should have used a log dog because the piece kept slipping. The benefit of video is I was able to edit it out. Check out "Hand Carved Wooden Bowl V" where I use all the tools you describe and my bench. Good luck with your projects and post a video of your work!

    Chris

  • @QueticoChris Heh Yeah I'll post a vid when I have a bowl worth posting. (And a video camera) Is That a sort of Pipe clamp you used in the bench for bowls? I also noticed you got those nice Hans Karrlson gouges. The curing info with the bowls was great too. Maybe my next attempt won't check so badly now. :D

  • @mattythepirate1

Yes - its an old fashioned clamp and I added some sharp points in the end to hold the wood better. Good luck!

  • Amazing Chris. Your abilities amaze me. You also have quite the collection of tools. I'm envious. Where do you find most of your vintage tools? I have trouble finding quality historic tools (the fact that I live smack dab in the middle of Toronto probably doesn't help. The broad axe is a beautiful piece.

Have you produced plans for your hewing bench/shaving horse?

  • YOU ARE MY HERO

  • @cavemanss

I'll do my best to maintain your respect.

    Chris

  • Dude you are my hero!! Wish I had the skills...

  • @Elbowrust

Thanks for the compliment and for subscribing. There is a thin line between passion and mental illness and I cross that line every once in a while!

    Chris

  • Love the sound effects!

  • @murk379

Glad you enjoyed it. Please enjoy all my videos. The funny thing about the sounds are they are not added - its just the actual sounds sped up 400%.

    Chris

  • @QueticoChris I wondered about that! The effect is quite enjoyable. I look forward to your other videos. Thanks for sharing so much :)

  • Is that an adze you're using to flatten the logs? I've not seen one that shape before.

  • @Tamaresque The 'shaving horse'; how does that stop the wood flying into your chest?

Maybe you should say in the description what tools you use, what you're making and how to use them, then I won't be asking so many questions. :-)

  • @Tamaresque What sort of timber are you using? Is it a softwood?

  • @Tamaresque What's the name of the tool you used to flatten the table top. I haven't seen one of those before, either.

  • @Tamaresque

I flattened the logs with a broad axe. This one is probably 100+ years old with a wide blade and a bent handle so I don't crunch my knuckles when I am using it. I can look for one if you like and send one to you.

    Chris

  • @QueticoChris Thanks for that, I haven't heard of, or seen, a broad axe before. As to finding one for me, no thanks. I have chronic health problems and have very little strength so power tools are the way to go for me. But in my early years I worked with hand tools and loved the feel of them.

  • he doesn't use power tools, he is one himself! watching him cut down this tree, he's like a crazy beaver!! ;D

now, seriously, how cool is it to feel you can do all this with your own body?

  • @nahnuhhuh

Thanks for the comments. I do get a great deal of satisfaction out of doing this as soon as the pain subsides. I hope you enjoy all my videos.

    Chris

  • Hi, Wonderful video. I've used it to welcome the 21,000th friend at Natural Homes on facebook. I hope this brings you more fans, you deserve them. Regards, Oliver

    Chris

  • learned so much so fast..great vid..

  • this speeded up vid technique makes it very good..

  • Lots of chopping and swinging! Ever hurt yourself badly?

  • @noneactive

I have not. Especially when chopping I keep my leg closest to the fall of the axe stepped back.

    Chris

  • that was awesome.

    Great work!

  • @josephallen19

Thanks. I use it all the time.

    Chris

  • Wow. Excellent.

  • @MrJoeyBoombotz

    Thanks. Whats a Boombotz?

    Chris

  • @medicjimr

Thats a real compliment since he is my inspiration.

    Chris

  • @QueticoChris Thats what it was meant to be, exceptional craftsmanship my friend

  • Very nice! great work.

  • @ckirk1311

Thanks. I use this bench all the time. It was worth the effort.

    Chris

  • Thanks for compliment (I think). Check out some of my newer videos. They are of similar quality. I will be releasing a new video before Christmas.

    Chris

  • Dude, you're crazy. Great work.

Its amazing what one can do once you turn off the TV.

  • Yes - get and there and start chopping!

    Chris

  • Glad you enjoyed the video. The best part of chopping a tree down is yelling "Timber!"

  • Great video. I found the accelerated parts to be humorous. The noise of the hewing got me going. Oh, and inspiring, now if I only had a tree to fell and make a bench out of.

  • Gary - Thanks! Looking forward to seeing some of your carvings.

    Chris

  • Glad you enjoy them - I will keep em coming.

    Chris

  • Awesome man! Keep the videos coming.

    James

  • This is the best video yet Chris! Keep up the great work!

    Gary M. Peiffer

  • Robert,

Thanks. I have some similar videos you may enjoy as well.

    Chris

  • wow thats awesome stuff man very cool

  • Max,

Thanks for the comments. I love this stuff!

    Chris

  • this is a great video chris, the end is awesome, but the sped up parts are not good, maybe normal speed with the important steps

  • @cekinxxx

No doubt this was more for entertainment value vs. teaching. I will definitely do a teaching video in the future but I just can't resist the fast movement and music.

    Chris

  • @QueticoChris i thought you do this to keep the videos short

  • Excellent work Chris its amazing what you can do when you have the skills and ability please keep posting your projects, all the best.

  • Good hear from you. Its always fun to make the videos.

    Chris

  • Good stuff! I can tell you spent alot of time working on that bench and this video.

  • In the song, Townshend sings about the delusions and drug use of the wealthy and hedonistic. The lyrics describe a party in which people hide from their problems behind a façade. Townshend has introduced the song in live performances with: "This song is about what happens when you take too much white powder; it's called Eminence Front".

  • amazing video!! thanks for posting man. your work inspire me to go outside and work with hand tools.

  • I know you dont know me. But can I come hang out with you for a while hahaha

    ...but seriously..

  • Now thats a compliment! Thanks.

    Chris

  • Dick Proenneke would give this video a thumbs up!

  • Excellent! I'm glad I'm not feeding you...how many calories a day? About 4 million?

    Best Wishes, Brendan.

  • @baconsoda,

    Hard work keeps me young.....

    Chris

  • Its truly a compliment coming from you. Thanks.

    Chris

  • Chris, if we ever run out of oil in the future, I'm coming over lol! You make it look so easy, you're really at home with this form of woodworking, truly awesome mate. I will be using some of your joinery techniques on my current and future projects. Good to see your videos again!

  • AWESOME! simply AWESOME! ... Thank you!!

  • @mallardhead,

    Glad you enjoyed it!

    Chris

    Chris

I'll do my best to maintain the standard.
