  • How much money did Mayor George Christopher receive from real estate developers to push this magnificent theatre into the ground and permit construction of the most hideous building in San Francisco? Someone should be held accountable!

  • @MoviePalacesf It's heart breaking, isn't it?

  • where did the organ go?

  • @TuboEspectador I think its at the El Capitan in Los Angeles.

  • The album "Farewell to the Fox" is now remastered & available on CD; Total time 72 minutes 26 songs Fantasy Records.

  • I stil have the record that rodsalter mentions, and it still sounds great although a little scratched from age. These organs are quickly becoming a lost thing anymore.

  • I was a young guy in my early 20's when I first heard this fabulous organ on a 12" vinyl record. George Wright was the organist. My 1st vist to San Francisco from Australia was in 1989 but didn't think about the Fox Thearter at that time. Research since then has of course revealed that it is very sadly no more. I visited again in 2006 and went to its address to see a modern office block. How awful by comparison to the thearter. So glad that the organ still lives on albeit in a new location. Rod.

  • @rodsalter - The Fox was demolished in 1963 - 64. It was one of the finest theatres in the world. I sure miss it and the "Mighty Wurlitzer".

  • This is a truly wonderful organ. How sad that this theater is gone. Who is the narrator in this video??

  • The narrator is my old friend Fred Krock, formerly chief engineer of KQED-FM and veteran of Bay Area classical music radio and recording.

  • Very true. The one good thing: The organ is happily installed in the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood (after it's tenure in a private residence somewhere or other). It can be heard regularly at the El Cap.

  • How sad it is that this theater no longer exists!!!
