Los Angeles Times, January 24, 1992: SAN BERNARDINO — Former singer Mitch McDowell of the funk group General Kane and a teen-age nephew were shot to death during a robbery at their bail bond business, authorities said Thursday. "We don't know if it was personal, professional or just a spur of the moment deal," Detective Vince Kutch said. Details about the slayings, including the type of weapon used, were not disclosed.
They used to play this all the time on KUOR 88.1 when it came out. The producer for this runs Groove Time Recs, in San Bernardino, the same town were one of the members was killed back in 92.
I cant believe I found this! I never thought to try on UTube. Should have known it would be here! No one I talk to believes this song ever existed. Now I have proof!
I had this on a walkman when I went to Nepal in 1986. It was quite a contrast to the nature elements of my vacation and the reality of big city life. I stumbled upon this and what a treasure I have found. Some of the best memories of my life.
I was looking for this too. My sister is the pretty one on the album cover, All I had was the vinyl record and no turn table. I wish I could go back to those days. It was fun doing the groupie thing with the band. Unfortunately most of them have passed on. But the music still kicks ass!
I didn't know what the name of the band was, all I knew was that as a kid, I used to rap "Crack killed Applejack, he jumped in and he couldn't jump back, he was just too blind to see that, death lives in the rockhouse." Every time I asked people if they knew this rap, they didn't. I grew up in Miami, and used to hear it on the radio all the time. I'm not into rap per se, I was always into rock, pop, and alternative, but this rap was engraved in my brain. Thank you so much for posting!!
Yo MAHARDAWAY, I'm feelin' you 1000 percent I too by the grace of God managed to survive my youth and make it pass 50. I used to hear the "old heads" of my day say "If I knew then, what I know now..." , and didn't know what they meant. I do now As for the youngsters of the day, all we O.G.'s can do is pray, 4 those who'll listen, teach! Peace and Hair Grease, God is love.
What I wouldn't give to go back to those days of my youth to relive with what I now know ... I hope those youngster's with their pants down under their ass cheeks will listen . B4 U know it ...U2 will be 50 ..." and there aint no comin' back , yall " .... 1986 seems like yesterday ... sometimes ..... me & momma were both young . pretty and bulletproof - aka - too stupid to know any better .
Deadly accurate description, and the timing (1986) was at the beginning of public awareness about crack. Cutting edge at the time, still a good listen...
Any idea where I can by this mp3?? I want to take this with me before heading back to play in the sand box in Afghanistan??? This Combat marine wants to make sure those young pups KNOW what REAL music was from the 80s... NOTHING LIKE IT!!! Semper Fi, and I'll see you when we get back stateside. This is my first visit home in 4 and a half years. Nothing like America.... Don't rob anyone with a water gun because death lives in the Rock House! Be Back soon....
@waycoolhollywood5 Are you kidding?? It's my HONOR!!! I am MOREEEE than sorry to know what happened to your brother back in 92. God rest his soul. But may you and the family know this, Mitch STILL brings happiness to so many others to this very day... Not many people can say that. God Bless!!!!!!
And think about this: 200 United Staes Marines will hear this song pretty much EVERY single day, as they have since I stepped foot in the sandbox. Except we say, "Death Lives In The Sand Box".. One way or the other, it does too!!! Many Blessings to you Terry, and we are FOREVER grateful for the music you brother gave us.. Semper Fi!!!!
@havingfun1968 My brother would be the one honored sir...Mitch served for a time in the Air Force until an injury forced him out and my younger brother served in the Army over in the "sand box" in M.I. as an interagator many years ago. Please let your Marines know that I am so very proud of them they have my families never ending support! You all are genuine U.S. American heroes!!
i heard this 25 yrs ago, never ever forgot this, i slung i banged , finally came out on the other side, older and much wiser ...thank god ...every one else is gone ,, some not even a memory, thanks to apple jack a myth, im still here
Maybe the best anti-drug song ever recorded. Applejack's downward spiral of degradation might seem amusing to some, but in reality many crack addicts, female and male, resort to prostitution and will do anything just to get another rock.
Well younsters, this is the way they did it in the eighties....and they called it MUSIC....MORE FANTASTIC ´80´s music at my Channel!!! Take a look.....
"Little-little-white-ball". WELL done song back during the time when crack was starting to be used by far too many people. I remember when some stations used to edit out the part about him "selling his own".

I bought the 2 Kane albums and some 12". Great 80´s funk, but so underrated and unknown by the general public.
