Loved this series and it should be on DVD. I totally agree with popvids40. Ethinics can be as racist as they like against whites but that's acceptable. Johnny Speight was one of the greatest dialogue writers of all time and Warren Mitchell is one of the best actors of his generation. This is a timeless. classic sitcom. Fearless, topical, it would not get within 1000 miles of broadcasting today and yet if you want an idea of what working life was like in England in 1972 then look no further. P.S. Derek Griffiths is wonderful in this scene, anyone who can compete with Warren Mitchell in a scene like he does is some performer

It was bad in those days but latter episodes of the show with the racism toned down and the politics more pointed and funny were actually alot more watchable and well written.

The whole point of this comedey was to show up the bigoted side of a lot of the UK people at the time. Alf Garnett is always made to look like a complete idiot for his over the top views.
Don't feel weird about watching this, I'm a 29yr old black guy, and I watched this show as a kid with my parents we thought it was brilliant, simply because it made Bigots look daft, and when you listen to Alf Garnetts theories, you realise how stupid they are.

Every time i see this and of course remember it, i cannot stop laughing. What has happened to free speech and representation in this country. Johnny Speight was one of the greatest dialogue writers of all time and Warren Mitchell is one of the best actors of his generation. This is a timeless. classic sitcom. Fearless, topical, it would not get within 1000 miles of broadcasting today and yet if you want an idea of what working life was like in England in 1972 then look no further. P.S. Derek Griffiths is wonderful in this scene, anyone who can compete with Warren Mitchell in a scene like he does is some performer

it's all about what you're used to hearing and saying I suppose. In Somerset "fancy a chinky?" means let's go get a takeaway from the Chinese restaurant. I said it infront of some Irish chaps in London in 2002 and they were quite shocked saying I was being racist. I was shocked too by their reaction, here it just means a takeaway Chinese meal. Alf Garnett was a parody of racists.
Ironically he had then been adopted as an idol for racists who didn't 'get it'.
Warren Mitchell's characterisation of this character (meant to be pitied) is spot on.

...And you are spot on with your analysis, so many people failed to understand the fundamental satirical nature of the show. The shows aim was to send up the racist and expose them for what they are.
It was cleverly written and that was it's problem, it was probably too clever for it's own good...and it still is judging by some of the comments on here.

I never saw reruns of this when I was in England. They didn't rerun any of their sitcoms from the 70's. In the US they rerun every crapy show in perpetuity.

Hi. I live in the USA, and our beloved 1970's sitcom 'All in the Family' (and its lead character Archie Bunker) was based on this show. I've never seen it before-I thought all the tapes were 'wiped'? This is great. Thanks. :D

I've had black and asian friends my whole life except for the last 5 years or so. Im 41, we've drifted apart cos they are so bloody racist. Watching this has made me realise without thinking about it that all my current friends are white. That's just the way it is.

It was bad in those days but latter episodes of the show with the racism toned down and the politics more pointed and funny were actually alot more watchable and well written.

Don't feel weird about watching this, I'm a 29yr old black guy, and I watched this show as a kid with my parents we thought it was brilliant, simply because it made Bigots look daft, and when you listen to Alf Garnetts theories, you realise how stupid they are.
