ive never seen horse on a menu or at a butcher shop before. where do people eat horses? i live in southern illinois and we breed hogs and cows for slaughter like craze, but a horse is worth more alive than its meat around here.

The way I understood it was that basically they stun them so that they go unconscious and then they bleed them to kill them, once they go unconscious they can longer feel anything so it is actually a very humane way to do it. At least that's how it's been explained to me. You just have to make sure you do the stunning right so that they don't feel it.
Did you guys know that horse meat taste like whale meat? I would prefer overpopulated horse to be killed than smart whales that are going extinct, but anyway, horse have helped us for years. They used to be our car. Now, this is horse being useful to use again.

Part of the injection is a paralizing agent, so the animal doesnt appear to fight. If you want to stun them first to guarantee that they are still and shot accurate, thats fine by me

I ate horse breaded beef once, it wasn't bad. Kinda' strong taste meat, like deer or so. It's leg broke in an untreatable way, so they had to put it down. It´s not something you shoud be disgusted at, it's an animal like a cow or a sheep. This is the most humane way to dispatch an old horse.
Now that horse slaughter houses are illegal in the USA, all that's happened is they now have to go through transport to Canada or Mexico for slaughter. Owners who can't afford to transport their horses abandon them to starve.
All you idiots saying this should be banned are responsible for industry loss from the US. You're not helping the horses and you're hurting your country.

@ihaterobbie123 Except that when the horses heads are impaled by the piston, there is no telling whether the horse is dead or paralyzed before the hang it by it's hind legs, slit it's throat, and drain it's blood. If anything, lethal injection is always the most humane way to kill any animal if it's humane at all.

Except, there IS a way to tell. Believe it or not the captive bolt guns were developed to ensure the most humane slaughter possible. It virtually eliminates the possibility of coherent activity in the cerebral cortex.
Let's, for argument's sake, say it isn't completely humane, what then? Every other solution I've seen is unworkable. Why do horses deserve this special privilage that other farm animals don't? I don't get it.

To me, the worst thing about this is the people who willingly kill horses all day long and make a living off of it. I think it's just disgusting but, again, that's just my opinion.

The most humane death is complete and immediate evisceration of the brain, which is extremely gruesome. The horses don't give a shit if you don't like seeing it, all they care about is being safe and we need to make them feel safe right up until their (hopefully) swift, painless death.
A blind opinion is worthless, an informed perspective is what you need.

Again, I'm not some 12 year old girl PETA freak sitting in front of her computer complaining about how animals are slaughtered, but the fact that you had to write "their (hopefully) swift, painless death." proves my point. "Hopefully" they go painlessly, when we can do it with a guaranteed painless procedure.

What? Lethal injection induced organ failure? Not only is that unworkable, it could taint the meat and be more distressing.
Just because your cousin went to the site doesn't mean they suddenly have expertise in judging whether the animal is feeling pain once it's been shot with the captured bolt gun.
I don't speak with absolute certainty about anything, "hopefully" was not a sign of faltering confidence in the current system.

@squirlybmx In a large animal, They can feel the toxins coming into their body. And have been known to fight the injection for up to 4 hours. Part of the injection is a paralizing agent, so the animal doesnt appear to fight. Bullet or bolt through a horses brain as their brain is so small, and skull thin, that it is the most instantanious death. If you want to stun them first to guarantee that they are still and shot accurate, thats fine by me

I ate horse breaded beef once, it wasn't bad. Kinda' strong taste meat, like deer or so. It's leg broke in an untreatable way, so they had to put it down. It´s not something you shoud be disgusted at, it's an animal like a cow or a sheep. Usually people is not aware of the process (sometimes bloody) it takes for the FOOD to get from the farms to their fridge. I disagree totally with animal abusing, but food making process is just a process to make food. Anyway, i'll stick to cow beef.

Horse Meat is actually pretty good like it or not, its recognized as one of the richest and the Juiciest meat ever, and yes its awesome, when i first tried it, its actually kinda expensive, to extract all the rich meat and sadly there is no other way to slaughter them, its either Knocking out the horses or killing them, people just do it for the money, its either goes to European and other places and its expensive as heck, idk whats the sole purpose of all this cruelty..i am a vegetarian
