I think I might actually like Brahms in a baroque style.
Music doesn't have words. It's all about telling a story or a thought or an expression through the combination of sounds created by various instruments. There are SO many possibilities you can do with the hundreds of instruments and tones and chords out there! Also, you are allowed to take another composer's work and turn it into a whole different piece. Looks up Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.
And to think those brainless people scurring around preaching their way is the best way, including their tastes without one 'legimate argument' as I quote one fine intelligent person below us. I'd go as far to say the classical world would be a much more accesible genre had it not been these pussies being such a snob about it. The very act is detestable enough to repel people away from it.
@muurtalo No, I don't care what others listen to and I respect them as long as they respect mine. See even this basic concept eludes you, too many people in this world lack discriminatory skills.
because bach was and still is the greatest musical genius to ever touch the face of this earth. Any interpretation that isn't in accord with his "vision" sounds terribly off. People think that you have to play music with crazy rubatos and such in every type of music for it to be emotional yet I can't not cry when I hear this on organ while pertaining to the strict rhythm.
@firebreathone, I agree with you, this is not a good transcription at all. In fact, it's one of the most horrible versions of the great Passacaglia I've ever heard. Stokowski was a genius alright, it's just this work is not among his best. And there's surely nothing wrong in playing baroque music in a classic or romantic style. Hell, it's nothing wrong in playing it in hard rock style either. Only it's got to be done well, and this interpretation, sadly, is very far from being done well...
It's not just not good at all, it's atrocious. Stowkowski might as well be spitting in bach's face haha. Like I said below, everybody thinks you have to break rhythm and slow down for things to be emotional and yet bach is supremely emotional.
And for those people saying that's it's o.k. to play this like brahms or tchaikovsky, then imagine how it would sound if we played those two in strict baroque fashion. Need I say more.
The comparison you made is so utterly erroneous that it defies description. To argue that the liberties that Stokowski took in interpreting the music are excessive from an aesthetic standpoint is certainly viable, but you, with the vague phrase "strict baroque fashion" (do you mean baroque opera, instrumental organ music, secular cantata, or concerto? These forms are all immensely different.) suggest that it is the same thing to go backwards in time as it is to go forwards.
@muurtalo He said that it's not OK to interpret baroque music romantically by implying that it's exactly as bad as interpreting romantic music in baroque style. The crux of his point is that any stylistic reinterpretation of a piece of music is wrong just 'cause it is. There is not one truly legitimate argument against orchestrating Bach's music in his post, and this statement is not a result of deliberate misinterpretation, I assure you.
But the worst fallacy within your argument is that you make a moral issue out of it, which means that you believe that this orchestration is a crime against music simply because it offends your narrow-minded musical sensibilities. If you have to make angry posts because someone orchestrated a Bach organ piece and it became popular, you are guilty of trying to force your musical taste upon other people. Give it up; people are going to listen to whatever they like.
too slow

How close were the mics? I can hear each individual violinist instead of just one section.

Some pussies think their tastes are physical laws of the universe or something.
God damn them, please. Wouldn't even blink if that happened.

I don't care if bach creates an earthquake rolling in his grave, I still like this piece.

This is the most amazing transcription, and possibly one of the most amazing songs (in this transcription) that I have EVER heard. Ineffable.

Stokowski was a genius, but let's not forget that his inspiration for this type of thing was none other than Virgil Fox at the AGO.

Not good at all. It sounds more like a Brahms symphony..
This is Bach (baroque music) not romantic/avant garde music. Even though it's a transcription, it is not a good one

Is it "bad" to play baroque music in a classic or romantic style?
there already are "authentic" versions, why is it bad to try something different?

Thanks for agreeing mate. It is as if he has singlehandedly killed Bach in this performance. Utter rubbish
