When I was a little boy and girl Dick Dale, played Ghost Riders in the Sky, shortly after Frankie Laine sang the same song. Still today he can make that guitar of his wale as well as it did fifty years ago, he is an entertainer extraordinaire.

I agree 100% There is no best guitarist. Never will be. It's a musical instrument, and there are so many styles that are just impossible to compare to one another, and each of those have styles have their own greats.

The best guitarist argument is the most tired, pointless argument I've ever known. It's like pissing into the wind.

Just because someone is your favorite guitarist? Hell, my favorite is Eddie Van Halen by far, and you'll never find me claiming he's the best ever.

I dont know if its been mentioned, but Dick Dale is an amazing guitarist as his guitar is strung upside down (EBGDAE)!! Watch closely to his videos, the "low E" is at the bottom!!

Having his guitar strung upside down isn't difficult for him because that is the way he learned.

There are too many fabulous guitarists to start measuring dick size ( yes, a pun). He's good, and creative, but not a great guitarist.

well maybe if you were alive back in the 50's and 60 and seen Dick Dale , he would have blown you and every other axe slinger off the planet. He inovated the surf sound and revolutionized guitar playing for that era as for example eddie vanhalen did in the late 70's or hendrix in the early 70's

Second, if you think you had to be alive at the time to recognize talent, how does anyone realize that Bach, Beethoven and the rest were any good? None of us were alive when they were. That was just stupid.

If you want to go back, Link Wray was as important at the time, and a better all-round guitar player. Dick Dale was good at reverb-soaked surf guitar. That's it. Nothing wrong, but not the best guitarist.

Hendrix was huge in the late sixties. You should have known that.

Are You Experienced was released in the U.K. in 1967. Same year he released Axis: Bold As Love, then in 1968 Hendrix released Electric Ladyland.

I used the term early 70's because that was when hendix was at his best then died! Dont play me for a fool I know when Hendrix hit the scene.

This isnt a 1 trick pony dude ITS A WHOLE STYLE and you fail to realise that Harlon. Hes got his own style he isnt burning muddy water licks like a certain chuck berry was! He helped make the fender strat with Leo fender !

Horray for Dick Dale!!!!! I think the first person who got me to play surf guitar was Dale, he rocks so hard but i got to give some credit to the bass player xD. Anyone who can duel againts Dale deserves some credit. Being a bass player myself too. Id wet my pants just being in his precense xD

I think he's largely underated because most of the major record companies absolutley despise him. Dale said so himself when I saw him in concert in '09.

I know he was touring as of last month. I saw him in NYC on 8/27/09. Saw an add in the Village Voice but other than that I don't know how to find out tour dates or if he's still touring.

He's really an amazing musician. The only thing that kinda bugged me at the show was that he didn't play too much Surf Music, not with an electric guitar. I did, however, like the music he did play; surf, metal, spanish, and middle eastern. His love of music is more for intimate, soft, heartfelt songs.

I could probably count on one hand the number of surf songs he played that night; "Let's go tripping" being one of them. Besides that he played a lot of Spanish guitar and did a few cover songs, like "House of the Rising Sun". At the end he even played a couple piano pieces.

Between each song he would talk a litle bit about his life, his family, his journey through music, etc. That, combined with the size of the hall itself really made it feel like a home-ish enviorment, very laid back.

Indeed-- I got it straight from the horse's mouth! :-) He's recovering from the surgery a couple of months ago, and is finally off the chemo and radiation. He's not ready to be a 'Ghostrider in the Sky'-- we want that Rider on the ROAD!! Love you, Dick!!

all traces of the cancer are completely gone which is why the chemo is not going to be happening anymore that is the good thing the bad thing is he had a infection inside so the doctors had to open him back up clean him up and sew him back up again it's a long road but hopefully he will be fully recovered as soon as possible

yeah very close he is close friends with the lady who puts together the surfing sunday shows at the surfing museum at huntington beach and I got to know her through dick and help her out with the shows over there he came by one of the shows a couple weeks ago and you would never guess by being around him in person what he has been through the past half year he is a very strong willed person
