Spits Gold, incomparable DOPE-MATIC MC. Rakim brings the goods, his fluidity of flow is nothing short of inspirational, and as for NAS...c'mon...The "R" is empirically-minded, the third eye blinding in it's off-the-dome quickness. Ever seen Rakim performing freestyle battles? I have, and while it's all done with respect, Rakim is positively on-point, a heavyweight, sharp as ever. Nas just can't come close to the imperial wrath of God, AKA, RAKIM> Flow forever, baby.
@Sirgreaseflick well said my friend.respect for nas but no one comes close.Thats the problem with rap no respect the history.i mean this is a guy who started it and is finishing it(he is putting out some of his best music now)and no one knows who he is.meanwhile the old ass rolling stones r on tv every week
@treemanjr Gives real Hip Hop fans a good feeling of exclusivity though :) I'm actually glad Rakim's rather unknown. The further away he is from 24/7 MTV song looping, the better in my opinion. That sort of thing has killed so many good songs and artists.
@Legendism360 Yeah, you're right. Even though is pisses me off that Hip Hop and Rap has become so wack and lame nowadays, and the Old School don't get the respect it deserves, it does gives us real fans a feeling of exclusivity. If someone starts talking Lil Wayne and Drake, you know what they are about, but it they mention Ra or any of the real talents, then it's like "Ok you're down with the program". I still try to spread the word and open as many eyes as I can to the Old School talent.
Empirical, transcendental, straight-off the dome DOPE-MATIC...Rakim is GOD; he's the zenith, the peak, the high-arching lyricist. Peerless delivery, Ra's style makes any comparison to Nas a moot point: Nas does not have the flow, the inner-eye philosophical stamina to out-verse the R on even his most inspiring day. Moreover, Rakim makes it sound effortless; he's street-wise, strand-up in every way. There's no bigger thief than a bad rap, and whatever Rakim touches is solid gold. Flow Forever
Best thing about rakim: 25 years in the game, and he is still doing it like he always has been, he's still as good as he was with eric b. It's hard for an mc to have this much stamina in the game, Rakim is good, no nor fucks with him for a reason.

@beast28274 more skills but not more intelligence and knowledge, dont even think of dissin pac he had the most important messages in his songs and rapped to help people. Rap aint all about skillz everyone has something different.
yeh 2010 will be the year rakim, nas, xzibit, the game, dr dre, raekwon and some more are all bringin albums out i think 2010 will be the year for rap. respect for the game for trying to keep it alive tho...

After watching dozens and dozens of underground and classic videos on here, I'm confused. There is so much great music out there, and there is even more untapped potential. Great albums come out all the time, and on here, they have insane amounts of support. Why is it, then, that out in the real world this stuff has fallen to the wayside, and bullshit has taken over the industry? How did we let this happen?
sad truth is people don't buy lp's anymore and yeah cd's too, specially those so called real fans ...I see it in some friends of mine never supporting their fav artists o_O rather download stuff and most guys nowadays see nothing else then party music in the genre of hip hop anyway :(
downloading is a problem for every artist though, not just underground rappers.....it just affects the underground artists pockets more because they dont have the crazy media publicity.
because this is the type of shit that opens your mind and makes you see real creativity.....they dont want you to have that man, they want you stuck in a bubble thinkin about irrelevant shit. an aware public is dangerous.

every rapper alive sucks compared to me. i'm not saying they all suck just in comparison to me they suck and have no potential to ever be as good as i am now yet i will continue to get better
rakim gone to underground. He has made it big time, he knows he goes back der, he wont do as much coz hip hop is going through the phaze of weak rap so he is stricktly underground
this is nice and kills anything out right now, but its still nothing like his classics. maybe i just dont like where hip hop is going, because KRS' album was real and good lyrically of course but it doesnt compare to his older stuff for me. same with this, its good but just different. i understand stuff cant stay the same forever, and i guess the game's just evolving, but i like the old sound better..
I see where your coming from Crayyawn, tho it's the opposite for me. Im 21 now and got into hiphop back in 99. I love Rakim, but since im this new to it i like he's newer albums better(and these songs). I see the skills and the amazing rap in his older work, but it's not music i can bump over and over. I just wish more of the veterans was going strong like this as Ra and KRS, hiphop has declined very in quality in the short time i've been checking for it. The game needs these kinda songs. peace
To the guy under me. I like your list... but just got to disagree with one name. i would go with 1)Nas 2)Rakim 3)Krs One 4)Big L 5)Common but your list is great. but the fact is keep on pushing real hip hop and don't let it die.!
nas is definitely the best since rakim, but ra's first three albums are on the source's top 100. if nas had a better ear for beats, and didnt do songs like oochie wally, they might be tied. plus, nas raps about his clothes, cars, and jewelry a lot like we care. rakim doesnt
he never retired, he just said he was going to retire just to sell more cds, like the Kanye vs 50 cent battle, it wasnt for real, they both like each other
actually i own all of his albums, as well as rakim's. the reason people said illmatic was so good was because they were expecting nas to be the next rakim. i like nas, i think he's the second best of all time, but in my opinion only a couple of those albums are really classic. i thought untitled was masterful, but he still allows pointless songs like 'Make the World Go Round' on whats supposed to be a concept album. when he's focused, he's unbeatable, but he loses focus on most of his albums
i'd rank Ra over Nas lyrically, but Nas tends to use different lyrical styles to Ra. Ra does more songs that are about hip-hop or remind us about how great he is, whereas Nas is more into the narrative side and street poetry, as well as Mafioso rap. i'd say Ra has a better cadence than Nas (he makes flowing dope lyrics seem so effortless...) and his natural charisma on the mic makes up the small difference between the two in skill. course, i ain't gonna take anything away from Esco's legacy ;)
WHY DA FUCK AREN'T THERE 1.000.000 views?!?!?! What da fuck, da GOD is releasing his new album and you fake ass niggaz ain't showin' enough Love? FUCK Y'aLL
Who put the fire out? real Hip-Hop is dying out
Sounds like the perfect time for Ra, set off
A new beginning, let me finish where Nas left off!

obviously u haven't heard all of nas's material
Elusive25 3 years ago
actually i own all of his albums, as well as rakim's. the reason people said illmatic was so good was because they were expecting nas to be the next rakim. i like nas, i think he's the second best of all time, but in my opinion only a couple of those albums are really classic. i thought untitled was masterful, but he still allows pointless songs like 'Make the World Go Round' on whats supposed to be a concept album. when he's focused, he's unbeatable, but he loses focus on most of his albums

nas raps about everything including what you said, stop fronting
deadlyedley 3 years ago
yea, but if he left some of that stuff out of his music, he'd probably have more classic albums

i'd rank Ra over Nas lyrically, but Nas tends to use different lyrical styles to Ra.
