Ansem SoD was the Master Xenahort side of that Xenahort where as Xemnas is the Terra side of him. Aqua is still alive... so is Ven. As evident from the KH BBS Secret Ending. Ven just doesn't have his heart right now...

Anyway, Nomura and his team are using different platforms for variety and new ways to implement the series. Nobody wants to play the same game 4-5 times just for a little more story *cough* Halo *cough*. What I mean is, a new game in a series calls for many new things, not just a few new shiny toys and some plot elements to back it up.

Notice how Terra's and Xehanort's hair are similar in style. In an Ansem report, when Xehanort was found, he lost all his memory and the only thing he could remember was the name Xehanort. Therefore, taking that name. He calls that pile of armor his old friend because it belonged to Aqua and she was a companion of Terra. His change of appearance may mean he delved deeper into the darkness in order to stop Master Xehanort 10 years ago.

I've got it. Based on the now very plausible belief that Terra becomes Xenahort From the BBS trailer, the blue armor "friend" is that of Aqua and based on the scene between Xigbar and Zexion, the other "friend" is probably Van, who resembles Sora and Roxas.

Yeah, from Birth By Sleep. Terra, Ven & Aqua. Whilst Aqua recides at the Room of Sleep, Ven recides in the Room of Awakening. Terra on the other hand seems to survive Birth By Sleep, and keeps on searching for his two friends (He states this in the optional boss fight in KH2:FM+)
