The term "Genius" is thrown around too often in today's society. I think a Genius does something that nobody else is mentally capable of doing themselves. Michael Hedges reinvented how to play an instrument that has been played the exact same way for hundreds of years. That is Genius.
@drinkfloridaoj it doesn't have to be thrash for the musician to get into it. Hedges felt music on a level that few (if any) of us will ever have the privilege of understand. I play guitar in a death metal band, I know what it's like to head bang, but I can also move to this and feel completely in place with the music. Don't spend your time focusing on things you don't understand, just sit back and listen to a master explain music through music.
Anyone know what concert this is? I know, technically it's possible to pinpoint it by using the Michael-Hedges-changing-hairstyles-chart, but it would be nice if someone had a date and, perhaps, a venue?
This man remains to this day, fourteen years afer his unfortunate death, a genius who redefined the guitar and its possibilities. The uniqueness of musicians such as Michael Hedges, and another wise man before him, Jaco Pastorious, will remain unmatched forever as they appear like some divine entities who are chosen to walk among us and leave us with the blessings of their music.
when I first saw him play I thought that was some skill I could never fathom....but I actually tried out the tunings and his songs just sort of come alive....start playing this tune and then go off when no ones around.... its very therapeutic lol
@mooycheese his hands aren't really moving that fast at all. what is brilliant about his playing is that he reinvented the way the guitar is played to meet the aesthetic he was after, and he did it flawlessly. he achieved it through a combination of special tunings, careful selection of musical instruments, and meticulous attention to articulation of notes in his picking, fingering and muting of strings. Try to reproduce the first two measures of the very slow Naked Stalk with his accuracy.
tuning a string to C is annoying me, i can only find open C tuning on the net but not how too tune an individual string to C, since i don't know how to do it nor have i found a video showing you how to do it i can't train my ear for it, can someone point me in the right direction please and possibly for tuning a string too F, i'd really like to learn this song so help would be good, cheers
@mutley2209 you dont really need an outside reference to tune to a C just tune one of your other strings and find C in the next octave up and use a harmonic like if you were dropped the bottom E in standard tuning to a D you could hit the 12th fret harmonic on the 6th string and compare it to the open D on the 4th string or the 5th fret on the A string.. hope this helps

@kenshin1224 cheers dude i'll have a bash see what happens, i managed to do a botch job on a C tuning though i think i was a bit # i put a capo on the forth tuning the tuning the string until it E on my tuner, then when removing the capo it should be at C i think =P your way sounds better lol
One thing that pissed me off about my friend and August Rush is he actually believed the kid was playing the guitar, when of course it was dubbed over by a professional artist.
Wow. . . just. . . wow. That inspires me to learn that song! It awoke, my musical nature! Ive been searching for a song that could challenge me, and I think I found my match! I'm gonna be on this song for at least a month or two now!
Completely inspiring. This makes me wish I saw him before he passed T-T
I met him at a tiny cabaret performance in Tulsa; he was kind, warm, witty, and treated us all like his guests. His college professor shared the stage with him for a duet, the fellow is a masterclass classical guitarist, but it was obvious he considered Michael to be his superior.
@M24Cal Yup, you missed an unbelievable performer. I saw him in Mesa, AZ at an outdoor concert in 1992. Like many of the others present, I didn't really know who he was. He amazed everyone and I'm sure all who were present wanted to see more of his concerts and dashed out to buy his albums. Michael was more than entertaining: he inspired people.
I meet him at Ravinia in Illinois during his "Double Planet" tour. I asked him how he was he getting all those sounds we're hearing? He actually went and got me copies of all his tunings, gave them to me and said with a smile, "Here these are for you, and good luck with those". We shook hands. He seemed to be very down to earth person and someone who cared about his fans. A person with complete mastery over music, a guitar god. It was the Fourth of July. thanks Mike
I got an opportunity to see him just before he passed away at a concert he did in Davis. He opened the set with a warm up piece... people applauded. Then another warm up piece... people applauded.. then.. he played Raggamuffin. When he hit the last note of that.. there was about a 5 or and 8 count where everyone just stared silent.. trying to figure out what they just saw. He laughed and said.. "It's ok.. I get that reaction all the time.." and the place went berserk.
yeah, they had kaki king do the cover for august rush. her covers are normally great, but there isn't a lot you can add to this. i guess they just had her do it because they needed shots of her hands? idk.
I hate that this is the first time I have heard of this guy. His songs are the truth. His body gyrations just show that he is just feeling his own music.
Michael really was something special. I'm really sad that he was before my time. I wouldn't have had the possibility to see him back then (being 8~11 in the few years before he died)
I saw Hedges perform twice in the 90's. Discovered the cd 'Breakfast in the Fields' while on a drive up the California Coast to San Fransisco from Huntington Beach in 1988. Found the cd at a flea market. I could not stop listening to it, and as a player I turned a lot of players onto his music. I was freaked out when I heard he died on this very same drive up the coast.
I think I posted this before but anyone else notice the setlist pasted to his guitar? I wonder does he have his tunings on there as well or does he remember them all.
Michael had all of his tunings memorized and could quickly go from one to another. In later years (after 1992) he toured with a tech who tuned his guitar simply to speed up the show and time between songs. The paper on his guitar is just a set list.
Listening to him tune was always part of the show though, no one else can do it like he did. He would talk and entertain the crowd while he did it. Incomparable guitarist, and stage man.
Man, I love the "Wakka Wakka" style! This is "New Age Trash Acoustic" at it's best! Thanks for the new vids man, it's such a pleasure watching them...
