  • I think that JMJ plays one too !

  • man i wish my sh-201 sounded this good. f**kin filters sound like shit.

glad i bought a Moog little phatty.

great synths man never sell her ;)

  • this does sound old

  • what a great fuking sound!

  • Funky !

  • The new generation of digital synths using analogue modeling (NI Massive, Thor, Z3TA+ etc.) combined with multi-core pcs and affordable controlers have now made digital synths far more powerful and every bit as good as most analogue synths. I used to own an SH3a, profit 5, jupiter 8, OB8, Oscar and Juno 60 , They were expensive to buy and maintenance was also expensive and inconvenient.

I never thought I would say this... but I now prefer digital over analogue.

  • Thats right - analogue synths are great 'things' but the new school of synths sound as good, are a factor more powerful and the transistors dont blow

  • I like how you used science to ultimately attempt to win an un-winnable argument, then covered it up with a preference to cover for come backs.

    Good work.

  • still; digital = lack of soul and juice ;)

  • sounds like my old Atari.

  • Nice machine! And an interesting sound demo.

  • I have an SH-201, but Roland should have stuck with analog. Of all the different model synths they make, they do not have one analog.

Great video and thanks for posting!

  • Hi synthpro - thanks for posting. I watched your 3 videos of you playing your synth setup - great sound and creativity.

  • Thanks!

  • I'm new to synths what's an analogue synth?

  • Analog is the way the sound is created. Analog synths use a chip that viberates electronicly to creat a tone. Digital synths have to have all the sounds stored in it. Think of it this way, analog is like a guitar string. A digital synth is like a recording of that guitar string. Digital synths are like recordings of other instruments. I hope this helps you out. I am not the best at explaining things.

  • I got ya man. Thanks. So analogues are better you think?

  • Your welcome. I think so. Analog synths are more agressive than Digital. The only thing with analog synths is that they go out of tune sometimes, but they are easy to retune.

  • anolog is better, but digital is catching up FAST

most ppl wont hear the difference today already. And with digital u can do stuff thats impossible with analog

  • No. Sorry. The difference between analog and digitial is the difference between continuous and discrete math.

In a digital synth, the signal path elements are discretized--Ones and Zeros of various bit depths. An analog synth is a continuous waveform.

A digital synth can generate waveforms. It does not have to be a sample.

Many analog synths do not have 'chips'.

Tuning is not always easy, especially in a live situation.

Digital sounds cold because it is more precise.

  • Erh... minor self-correction: Digital is more accurate. Analog is more precise, but lacks accuracy.

But with most modern digital signals, the level of precision meets or exceeds the precision of the average human ear--and speaker system.

  • yeah, but digital is getting to the point that the human ear wont hear the difference anymore.

and computers are getting ridiculously powerfull so programmer can actually qsimulate the 'lack of accuracy' (glitches and pitchshifts)

  • Oh,ok. I was way off. Sorry about that. I play synths more than I work on them. I am in college now majoring in electronics so I hope to learn more about this kind of stuff.

    Thanks

  • absoltely and coompletely wrong!

  • @synthpro junos are analog

  • I have a labelled sh3a but the casing and circuit board say it is an sh3. As I also have several sh3a's in comparison I notice that the sound is what I call thicker or richer could me sh3a really be an sh3? Is there any way of proving this.

Also has anybody ever seen a modular version of this synth?

  • I'm in a similar boat as you. Any information would be helpful.

  • cool, can you play baba o riley?

  • does it have midi?

  • sounds thin ... !? why ?

  • because its an old roland. Its got the thinner more digital sound of japanese analogs, if you want fat get an old american synth.

  • Nice. Can you lay down some lead or basslines? That's what i want to hear from this synth.
