I am very impressed with how relaxed and happy your birds seem to be. I've been working at a parrot rescue for a while now, and it's nice to see some happy macaws for once. The one's I work with have either been abused or neglected. So you can probably imagine some of the personalities. There are a few who are willing to be handled, but that's every now and then.
hey can you please tell me if parrots cost more if they are hand feeded or if they have food in their bowls? Is there eny difrencess? And Im saving up money for a african grey that's in the pet store, but I have a hamster Roxi so I will have to wait 1 or 2 years.Because my dad said I can only have 1 pet and I really want a plarrot
@LionMushrooms By the time the birds get to the pet store they are already eating out of bowls on their own. The term "hand fed" means that shortly after they hatch, the breeder removes them from the nest and feeds them food through a syringe until they are weened and can eat on their own. This type of "hand feeding" gets the bird used to being handled by humans. You should see if there is a bird rescue in your area. You can get a bird for less than half the cost.
@LionMushrooms African greys are awsome! I'm picking one up on Friday. Not sure what kind you were looking for, but if it is going to be your first bird, you may want to get a Timneh Grey instead of a Congo Grey. They seem to be a little less prone to feather plucking (I've heard).
@LionMushrooms just a note to say if you're querying the cost of buying the bird, you should considder if you can afford to keep the bird too. it's not just the initialk soend you have to think about. they have expensive habbits. George (greenwing) has about £100-£150 in toys alone in about 2 months but then he's VERY destructive. make sure you do your research and know what an average spend is likely to be. you'll need to think about:
@LionMushrooms .... Cage and bird and equipment (intiail spend), and then the ongoing costs, food (either pellets or seed etc) fresh fruit and veg, toys, cleaning solutions (most usual household cleaners aren't safe around birds) and emergencies like vets bills. i'm sure I've probably missed a few since my bank balance is usually always £0.00.... also, research what demands the bird will have from you! some people are suprised how much time and company they demand.
@LionMushrooms research, research, research and good luck to you and your future bird :) enjoy their company (even though sometimes they will drive you nuts!) they are a real delight to have as company. (ekkk...having said that, George just "fed" my hand....yup, truly a delight!!)
Your macaws are extremely cute in every way. Perfect feather, happy, healthy and bratty, just like they should be. I have a greenwing myself- she doesn't seem to know she's a bird and doesn't act anything like these two, but she's just as healthy and happy. I love watching the videos you post of your two. Thank you =)
I have a blue and gold macaw and I was wondering how you managed to get yours to be so calm. My father had him before me and he has been moved around a lot this past year-two years and has become very antisocial and mean. He is finally letting me do things with him again but he is still being mean to everyone else and I was wondering if you had any pointers for me?
@Hinata12488 Birds that get moved around a lot tend to become highly stressed. If he is letting you do things with him, it sounds like a good transition. It will take time, lot of time.As far as being mean to everyone else, you might be the one he picked and that will be it. Out of our 6 birds... the scarlet macaw(rescue) loves me, barely tolerates my wife. Senegal hates me...loves my wife. Kona and Rio are fine with most people but only wife and I can handle them.
@phoenixstudios22 He is usually pretty friendly to most people other than liking to pick on anyone new. He has calmed down a lot over the last few weeks. Now just got to keep him from eating the house which I am not sure why he has decided to start doing. I usually feed him lots of nuts, dried vegetables and fruits, and fresh vegetables and fruits when the prices are good. What all do you feed your birds?
@Hinata12488 Pretty much the same things. We mix pellets with seeds. Nuts are high in fat which macaws need, but dont over do it... a few a day is enough. Don't forget the table scraps from dinner...chicken, eggs, whole grain pasta, anything fresh. Make them part of the family at dinner time.
@phoenixstudios22 Yeah, he loves chicken. Lol. When my mom used to take care of him she would always make him a little plate of what she had cooked. Mashed Potatoes were the main thing he loved to eat back then. (:
Hahaha. What a couple of happy monkeys! I must've watched this a dozen times. <3 It's nice to know I'm not the only person who has lost complete control to a couple of macaws!
They're so funny together. I can see why, if you commit to taking care of one, you'd want to have at least two. I'd be in stitches all the time. Either that or tearing my hair out. LOL!
I really love this video - they are so fun. I watch this just to cheer myself up sometimes. I "babysit" a lovely 10y old Greenwing for friends, but he is an only-bird, so it's nice to see two macaws interacting like that.
@linky7980 Try a rescue first. Most of the "birds" are not bad birds. You might be able to find a bird that "picks" you. Or you may decide on a different breed altogether. Either way...cost is less than half and most come with cages included. We got Kona and rio at the Magnolia Bird Farm in Riverside, CA. Our three other birds are rescues.
hey guys im a big fan of all ur videos u really treat ur birds well im just wondering if its better to get two macaws? or is it fine with just the one?
@Jcena0909 Many do fine by themselves but I guess it depends on the bird. Macaws are very social animals and need a lot of interaction. We got the second macaw because we kind of felt guilty because my wife and both worked long hours at the time. I do warn you though, once you get one, you will want more anyhow. Check and see if there is a local rescue in your area, there are many good birds needing of homes.
This is one of my new favorite videos. Our sun conure loves to play in the bed, too. (Sometimes a little too much) I can't get enough of the synchronized trumpeting sound. Awesome, awesome video.
@Verkleidett i have a blue and gold baby, and i would get a youger one so they can bond to you. the older ones can be very mean and has probebly been through alot, and they have already bonded with the previous owner.but ethier one they are alot to handle and care four, they will always be a two year old child, even if they're 70 years old!
@Verkleidett - With a younger bird, you have to go through all of the hormonal stages, and you don't know what you'll end up with after the bird hits maturity. In short, it's a lottery.
That adult birds are "destroyed" in some way is a myth. Sure there are really abused birds out there, but the vast majority of birds are only rehomed for being what they are - loud, messy and dangerous.
So cute I must get a Kazoo if they still make them to teach this adorable sound! Ever wonder who the idiot creep is that voted this & the first Kona & Rio video down...1 loser. JEALOUS!
omg, they are amazing. living with any type of parrot would be like living with a 10 year old child. they are unbelievable in the things they can do. i would feel embarrassed to be around them, lol id be scared they are smarter than me.
@RingneckDoveFan We got Kona and Rio from the Magnolia Bird Farm in Riverside, California. We adopted our caique, senegal parrot and scarlet macaw from a local bird rescue.
ahaha its funny i have two budgies ad im not an experianced owner but my budgies are cute ad the love to chew on paper but i have such nice nice birds :)
@KawaiiiSamuraiii It is a very serious commitment. So you need to really need to be sure. We just adopted a rescue scarlet macaw. She had to be kept in a room by herself most of time and was really neglected...ended up plucking all of her feathers off her back and chest. Just make sure you have the time.
@KawaiiiSamuraiii First time raw beginner for bird keeping jumping in for a large macaw? Oy. If you haven't yet, I suggest working with a parrot foster home so you have a clear understanding of the noise and mess levels that can occur and socialization/handling needs, especially since you've never had birds before.
One big thing: macaws are big and can intimidate a lot of people. Keep that in mind if you ever decide to go on vacation and lack experienced bird people near you.
@KawaiiiSamuraiii Those beaks aren't just for show, and those birds could live longer than you. Might be best to start with something a bit smaller and easier to manage. Whatever you do, DON'T buy from a pet store. Many of those birds are abused, sick, and wild-caught. They're wild animals. Find yourself a reputable breeder.
@KawaiiiSamuraiii - Please no!! These birds suffer so much due to improper care and parenting. They are a HUGE life-long commitment. Please do not get one just because YouTube videos make them look cute.
There should be a disclaimer on all parrot videos on YouTube: "Most folks are not cut out for parrot ownership - especially not macaws."
These birds require HOURS of human contact EVERYDAY for 50-100 years.
@KawaiiiSamuraiii PLEASE DO NOT GO TO A BREEDER!! I cannot stress that enough. There are so many neglected beautiful parrots that need good homes that are in shelters. Google parrot rescues in your area. If you go to a rescue, I can guarantee you that there will be one there that will steal you heart. They really need someone to love and take care of them
@free2drm Hi there, I also would like to recommend maybe doing some volunteer work at a shelter before adopting. It can give you a good idea if you feel it would be a good choice for you to adopt one. That way, you can see the real deal. Best of luck to you
LOL! I wish our macaws (Harry(blue and gold) and Rascal(Green wing)) were this nice to each other. Harry is an older male and Rascal is still young. All Rascal wants to do is play, but Harry shuts him right down. :( And whenever he can, Harry goes after Rascal's tail and pulls it.
Are they "singing" something particular or are they just messing around?
Sounds so lovely when they sing together like that.

@PhoenixBlackthorn I agree so much. I even have a medium size (Vosmaeri Eclectus) and am still intimidated by the larger macaws.

Those two poking around under the pillow remind me of what cats will do when they think a laser dot went under something
