like sting first and foremost because he writes songs about relevant subjects, much like Peter Gabriel. No surprise they both fight for same causes and have sung together on occasions
Yes, history does teach us nothing; better yet, few care or pay attention are aware or self-less enough to learn of its lessons, for we live in the United States of Amnesia.
think he means don't let the human destroy the being. Don't be separate from life with repetitive thinking that you are not good enough. Of course we should know our history, but we are not our memories. Fear and pride are not the real US, just thoughts. We can get to the point where we all know we are human beings who want to live here on our only home and stop the deathwish.
Makes people think about it tho eh?.Perhaps this was the artists intention?.It stirs debate on what we have/have'nt learned."sooner or later" implys that contrast.
fi You hate your history and want to forget it , fine, but dont try to make me forget mine. I love my History. And i will do everything in my power to pass it on. Because the future depends on it.
History is FULL of example of how TO do things right and how not to do things at all. Without history We wouldnt exist. Sure some cultures want to forget their history because it was infamous, but hey bad history is as just as valuable to the future as good history. Without history we are Doomed. Obviously Sting has not read 1984 and Fahrenheit 451. When you control history you control knowledge. and then you control people. History is JUST AS important as math and science.
Help you children, History will teach us nothing if we refuse to learn from the lessons of our past mistakes. It seems sometimes that politicians and leaders are sending us back to the Dark Ages with the doctrines they subscribe to; we have to accept what we have done wrong in the past in order to move forward. Sting's problem is that he is too skilled as poet, too far above the heads of the herd.
Come on! All sane people can agree that Sting has made some great music, saying he's stupid is just stupid. And I don't know anything about this song but I don't think he wrote it really believing in it. He probably wrote it to mess with people's minds and make people mad cause it's untrue. Cus it is untrue, even Sting know that.
Without History Sting wouldnt have his Keybords and microphones. hed be out trying to figure out how to sharpen a stone or a piece of wood. Idjiots those who take these lyrics to heart
Sting's music from and for the soul. I have been a fan and as a guitarist played his music, so if you want to take a expedition on a musical journey listen and ride on!!!!!
The broke up cos Sting and Stewart fought tooth and nail ... Sting was the main song writer by the time Synchro rolled around .. he left cos he wanted the compose things his way. Hence the break up of The Police ..... Thank goodness for the Reunion Tour ... would of loved a new album though.
When The Police first hit the scene, they were nothing short of a force in both advent of New Wave and the growing insurgence of Reggae & Ska into the mainstream of music and popular culture.
Their late '70s anger was one of the voices of their generation and from Outlandus to Synchro, they had not one work that was not excellent.
But by '83 they'd run out of things to say and I believe it was one reason why they called it quits.
Sting still had some good ideas, but the fire'd gone out.
the bass line is mean for sure, but that percussion work is whats kicking my ass.!! awesome man

i agree but history cannot teach you who you are so do not identify with history..in the end it is just his story and not the essence

You know, that's a pretty interesting perspective. I hadn't thought of it that way.
No sacrasm here.
Come to think of is, Sting being both angry and above the immediate world gave him the right to be that cynical...and incorrect.
