Printers use alot of ink, cost a tonne of money, and are basically made out of cheap plastic unless your doing it professionally.
Printmaking is a process with a different kind of engagement, if your working with wood, its smell, its feel, its aesthetic that all works together. Great video, and handsome to boot!
In the past, this was one of the only ways of printing multiple copies of the same image. Now there are faster/cheaper ways of printing, but this is still used by artists who are looking for an older, less precise ascetic. If you want to use an ink jet printer, chances are you have a completely different goal set. EOD.
It's about using your hands to produce something unique, you should know more then just how to use a computer. Any fool can press print for image somebody else made made, it takes skill to make it yourself and be an artist.
This is a true art form and can be a lot more complicated. This was a video for a basic design and technique. You should check out what Picasso did as "reduction block printing"
The point is not to just create the image, but create the texture and style of block printing as well. That is what makes the difference between this style of printing, and printing something with a computer printer. You cannot replicate this style in the exact same way with a computer printer.
I am an art student, and I have used many forms of print making. As a graphic design student, I am most familiar with printing my work on a laser printer. However, I much prefer using hand printed methods. If you look at them side by side, there is no comparison. Hand made prints have much more character, and possess many qualities that are impossible to achieve with a laser printer.
(multiple prints are numbered to form a limited amount of editions - or may be printed once and remain as a single product).
FYI: Famous Artists who used print techniques such as woodcut, etching, intaglio, aquatint, lithography, screen-print, et cetera...Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Francisco Goya, and Andy Warhol. Early printmaking techniques provided the basis for your "in these times computers and inkjet/laserprinters"
2. "The POINT of doing this" IS NOT to "make a certain design and then being able to print it over and over again" You may have the ability to do so, printmaking is the production of art by way of Printing, in this instance there is the element of originality, each piece created is considered original since it is not the reproduction of another piece of art. Each print has its own unique qualities, often varying even in the slightest of degrees ...
versus the middle ages (often characterized as the "dark ages" - A criticism of the fall of Rome which was "dark" compared to the "light" of classical antiquity)
THUS -Print caused a largely important social impact within history, people became literate because they had printed materials at their disposal. Among other important and clearly relevant values.
1. Printing has been around since antiquity, used for the circulation of both images and text. This art allowed for multiple texts to be distributed among the masses along with enabling distribution on an even greater level. This wide-range distribution allowed individuals to carry forward knowledge that would likely become lost through decay with the progression of time. Think Renaissance (A time of great advancement: literature, philosophy, art, politics, religion, science etc.)
When block printing is done well, there is a quality to it that an inkjet printer cannot replicate. That is what makes this style of art unique. It is an art. The video is just a demonstration. Traditionally this should be done as a woodcut. The wood gives an organic feel which cant quite be duplicated by a different printer. Those with a distinguishing eye can tell the difference.
i did this in my art class it was really cool how it turned out especially with layering the color after color for a more 3D look but man was it just a pain to do it!
the point of doing this is actually to make a certain design and then being able to print it over and over again. In these times with computers and inktjet or laserprinters, it looks like to much trouble.
But it's just a craft nothing more. Because it's almost useless these days, it's even called art.
but starting to speculate about the waste of money for art... it would be a story without an end.
You could probably do it, but I'd think it would be easier and cheaper to find wall stencils and do it that way instead. The one thing he doesn't show in this video is that uniform pressure is SO important - The baren won't do that and you'll see a much lighter and looser impression than if you used a printing press. I'm not sure it would be easy to use the technique on a wall!
Great intro to linoleum printing. Easy and fun to make a hand made object. What's the name or brand of the rolling press used in the video?

Good work mate, it is about having fun making prints and being creative, not grubbing cash or saying who/what is better etc.

Products like this are good for people who otherwise would not have the ability to express their creative side.
Who are we to say what is fun for other people?
Like they say: "I may not know art, but I know what I like".

Personally I think that's such a waste of money.
All that money to transfer paint/ink onto another paper?
I can draw arrows and just paint them in myself, saving me about 200 bucks in the process.
