Another thing is, the affect the relationship with the father had on both boys. It's interesting that the older boy, Darren, was the more submissive character and Connor was the more dominate personality. I think it's because Darren, having been shaped into the person his father wanted him to be was never allowed to develop his own thoughts and feelings; whereas Connor was almost forced to figure out who he is. But, both had no one but each other that understood their father’s repression.

The sad message here is how an insensitive father and an emotionally removed mother can mess up their kids so badly. Both these boys had the same type of relationship with their father. But, the affects were different, yet exactly the same. The father didn't care about who either of his sons were really. But Darren had the physical aptitude, whereas Connor didn't. So, the boys had only each other as someone they felt truly cared about the real person that they were.

I am actually torn between " my god how beautiful and sad" and "bleeding, my eyes are bleeding" I mean the story is interesting the cinematography is pretty good, but I have a sister and from that point I just can't help but be silently screaming while watching this,may be I'm narrow minded. You are being narrow-minded. You couldn't think of your sister in that way. Totally normal; most people never think of their siblings like that. But just because it's not the norm does not mean it's gross or wrong. Imagine if that philosophy were placed on everything. And who are you to pass out judgment of whom one can and cannot love, anyway? "Incest is disgusting" is ingrained into our collective mind just as "homosexuality is wrong" once was. The ancient idea needs to be buried.

@VampiricEmily Actually, I think it's natural to asexualize anyone you grow up with, it's an instinctive precausion. (That's why it's so hard to be attracted to a childhood friend). The only situation incest would be possible is when this instinct is turned off (due to some sort of sociopathy or whatever) or when the siblings didn't grow up together.

Then again, homosexuality doesn't lead to reproduction and it was proven in minor numbers natural. Has incest been observed among animals, too?

Anyway, I don't think you'd have to be a sociopath to not asexualize a sibling. Just like how you can hate your mother, or love your kidnappers (stockholme)... I think it's all about circumstances.

Hating your parents is not unnatural at all; loving your kidnapper is a twisted, yet understandable process of living with and depending on only 1 person. But I can't imagine romance between siblings unless something went wrong in their social development.

However, with the many social "disorders" in modern society, I guess a certain percentage of incest could be expected!

I just don't think it's as natural as homosexuality -cue animal world.

Now, when u look at psychology, there is the environment and the genetics. Now when you grow up with a person, you see her for what she is, all of her. You see her mistakes, her flaws, etc. Now if these things dont happen AND the 2 brothers (or sisters) are genetically a little bit more protective of theyr family, I don't see why it would be SO surprising.

Now if you take into account the genetic malformation that can ensue with incest, its no wonder it has been SUCH a big taboo for years, but when you really think about it, if it can happen for 2 estranged brothers, I dont see why it couldnt happen with normal ones (desexualization being an occurance, not a law.)

@wikipou You can't generalize love as that "one thing created in your brain". There are so many kinds of love and like, with or without a sexual interest included. So, far incest seems about as plausible to me as a gay best friend going straight for his girlfriend.

Incest is definitely possible under special circumstances (the siblings didn't grow up together; the family is isolated from the rest of the world; the social growth in incomplete). Not naturally, like homosexuality, I think.

@AnkokuEvangeline I think we'll just have to agree to disagree, because thats where we clash: Is incest always caused by a disorder (nature or nurture) or can it occur naturally, in which case the reason why its not frequent is because of the stigma attached to it. I think its natural, you don't... Maybe one day we'll know, when we FINALLY understand human behavior completely. (fat chance...)

I try, but I have a hard time watching this movie completely openminded. Their love is very beautiful, but a little voice in my head keeps going "wrongwrongwrong".

Maybe it's because I grew up with 6 siblings, and the thought of loving any of them that way is really unpleasant.

I don't see the incest issue as being a complex one.

The taboo of incest had a biological imperative that was socially important....ie to prevent genetic defects within the limited pool ....the family.
