  • Man, this is depressing. Well, actually. Hit up Frood for a walk. That's depressing.

  • Look at that, not a single crackhead to be seen.

  • People and activity in all directions! This is what a city should be. Downtown today is a ghost town compared to this. The urban vision for Sudbury is more parking lots.

  • lol .. haven't heard of "amble scramble", but it's a good one... This type of crossing is more commonly known (by traffic designers) as "helter skelter" or sometimes (depending on the country) "pell mell"

  • why are people walking in the middle of the street? clearly inbred.

  • @spittinslim

wow, is that even a pre-agreed upon stereotype of inbreeding?

  • @Superfly79 i don't know??!?!! but they certainly haven't perfected inbreeding. too many ugly, ugly people.and fat too.

  • i wish we lived in that time =c I luv luv luv the cars the clothes the streets and the popcorn machine

  • Someone volunteered that there are many people trying to recreate the vibrancy of 1971 again. Well I am one of those people who truly believes it is going to happen. With 3M at the helm and aware of the inept, useless, tired, city department heads who do nothing but thwart creative ideas I am hopeful the next few years will show some major improvements to the heart of our great city. The City of Lakes! The 2nd largest city in land area in Canada.

  • @MrBeaker01 May I suggest some stuff?

    1. More police downtown (People will feel safer)

    2. Public Venders

    3. Deregulated store hours.

    4. More tourist attractions.

    5. More apartments and Condos downtown.

    6. MULTI-LEVEL GODDAMN PARKING!

    7. Fix the "Devil's Crossing" infrastructure.

    8. Sidewalk Trees and taller buildings.

    9. Urban Manufacturing.

  • There's something inherently appealing about this video... have added it to my We've Come a Long Way, Sudbury Playlist . Compare it to some of the other I have there so far, just for fun.

  • holy shit.... that might've been my sister viv with those marymount girls! what a great vid...hope there's more. p.s. there are many people trying to remake the downtown core...your bitter vetch about what it has become (on your watch) probably won't discourage them (us) one bit......viva old sudbury!!!! donny

  • Tabarouette... Were these images taken during some festival, or was it just a regular day downtown?

I think I arrived in Sudbury 40 years too late.

  • I would have loved to live in this town in the 70's. I can't stand it here now.

  • This actually makes me very sad. I can't beleive this is the same place. I love my city , but it's run down, poorly managed and turned into an economically depressed retirement community.

  • I was born and raised in Sudbury! Great memories!

  • What a contrast to the state it is in now!! I remember the vibrant city I lived in back then...The politicians have certainly ruined Sudbury's down town,..now I wouldn't go near the place.

  • @airehk EXTENDED SHOPPING HOURS!

  • Sudbury's constant inept municipal governments destroyed that city, especially the downtown core.

  • Great footage. Sad to see the downtown core such a dump now. It looked so bright and vibrant back then, now it's dark, dirty and creepy. Shame on city officials for letting the downtown become what it is today.

  • Wow... Look at how good the roads look... Didn't see one pothole.

  • Cool!!! I remember it looking that way, a little... i THINK???? Thanks for sharing ;o)

  • Is it just me or do the people look happier? Btw I so remember that John players sign on the corner.

  • I miss downtown like this, I used to love eating at Kresge's with my mom and little sister.

  • @mom2girlscb Oh I remember stealing a blouse from kresge's I was a bad girl! :P

Eat there was fun too, they had a great chocolate cake!

  • @mom2girlscb OMG- me too ! they had the best fries and gravy!

  • I'm amazed that there are actually a lot of people downtown! Wouldn't it be fun if it was still like this today?!

  • Boy times have changed

  • I worked at the Odeon that summer....I put up the 'Mad Dogs & Englishman' sign on the marquee. Graet summer !!

  • Don't forget there were no box stores, no 500 TV channels, no Internet, no cell phones, no smart phones.... people got together to meet, eat and talk and shop. Going to the store was an event.

  • All gone thanks to outlying shopping centers stating with one in New Sudbury. Sad!

  • Hey this is terrific footage of downtown Sudbury in its glory days. Thanks for helping to recapture part of my childhood.
