Simply put, none of this works for me. This isn't to discredit you. I followed your instructions, as well as having looked all across the Internet for help, and no matter what...silence. Neither the 'Listen' method nor the Audio Repeater method gives me an audible output at the speakers/headphones, even though all the steps in the middle seem to be right and the 'green bars' (the VU meters) are definitely registering input.
I had a different question, im looking to split my laptop speakers and a set of bluetooth speakers. I have VAC, i added a couple of cables, played with the "listen too"
other than that idk, any help would be great thanks
I have one question: if I mute my Laptop, will the audio still get played (livestreamed)? I'd prefer to not have sound coming out of the Laptop since I already have it out the TV.
But then I wonder if doing that also mutes the sound to the livestream. I hope there is a workaround if it does.
@hugonium thanks for the reply. When I muted my laptop via the onboard button, it wouldn't mute, but I solved the problem by disabling the speakers in sound control. It still allowed for sound tho, since virtual cable line 1 was showing sound, and also through FME.
Very good in-depth video on VAC. I watched another tutorial video on how to livestream, and the guy just brushed over this because he already had stereo mix. I didn't know you had to go to Recording, and check Listen-In. I was getting no sound.
Okay so I have windows Vista 32bit, and I'm using Vac 4.09. I'm using the repeater because I couldn't find the listen tab. So I have my Wave in set to Line 1, and my Wave out set to my speakers, and when I hit start all I get is this voice saying "trial" are my settings correct because I want to stream audio from my computer. I'm trying to figure this out to stream audio with Beta.Join.me (yes it uses audio now) Any help would be appreciated.
So I set line 1 as the default playback device, and then under the recording tab I set Line 1 as the default playback/communications device and told it to listen to my speakers. Now FME shows the bars moving while audio is playing. I also want to have my voice over the stream, so I set my microphone to listen to Line 1. Now Line 1 picks up both my sound and my microphone. Problem is that I can also hear myself over my speakers. Is there anyways to fix that?
@Spaisekraft Set up 2 lines from VAC's Control Panel. Make sure to disable line one from those two tabs firstly or else VAC will deny you from making the necessary change.
Line 1 will be dedicated to stereo mixing. Line 2 dedicated purely for your voice AND the mixing. Allow your microphone to listen into Line 2. Allow Line 1 to listen into LINE 2 instead of your speakers. then you have to open an Audio Repeater (under VAC's Program Folder) and loop Line 1 into your speakers from there. gl
@hugonium Your set up totally works! I had given up on this long ago. I also find this to be a little simpler:
Aud. Rep. 1: Line 1 to Line 2
Aud. Rep. 2: Mic to Line 2
Line 1 set as default playback device/recording device with "listen to this device" checked. In your recording software of choice set playback device as Line 1, and recording device as Line 2. Now you're able to record sound from your computer and mic without having to hear your mic played back. Thanks a bunch!
@Sodorii The only way to mitigate the lag is by lowering the buffer size in the repeater, and this requires some toying around until you find the right size. Keep lowering it little by little until you start hearing artifacts (or when it completely stops working) and find a middle ground from there. Aside from that, there's not much you can do. Good luck!
1) Make sure you have "Disabled Devices" checked so they appear in the list. Perhaps Line 1 will show now, and you can enable it from here
2) Go into VAC's Control panel and make sure there is at least one cable present in the list. You can set how many cabled you need at the top left with the "Set" button.
@eurofighter13 Forgot to mention to hit "restart" and check if it works. The thing is if the cable(s) is under use then you have to disable it first from the playback/recording tabs and do the VAC control panel work from there. Good luck.
I get a strange error message when I try to add a new cable, saying "Cannot set number of cables to 2 (0/2404 - The device is in use by an active process and cannot be disconnected)
@codemeister1990 You have to disable ALL virtual cables under the Recording and Playback tabs in order to change how many of them you want, from what I remember.
@hugonium I ended up removing the program from my computer, eventually it let me change it to 2 (I think, couldn't tell because of...) but then my computer immediately crashed, and wouldn't run for more than a minute in normal (non-safe) mode without freezing. So whatever that did, was not friendly to my laptop
@hugonium i think i understood and i have VLC media player too, but what preferences do i need to choose, i want to set audio output to line 1 in VLC, but there are 4 output modules ( DirectX, ...) and i was like WTF?
@hugonium Ok i we done this, but now what do i have to do so my media player plays music, but so others hear it too, do i need to put media player output to line 1? Or what? o.O
So, this tutorial worked perfect for me but there's only one problem..
They keys on my keyboard for volume control doesn't seem to control the right device. I could control the volume of Line 1 with them, but it doesn't have any effect on the actual speakers. Anyone have this problem?
This is a reply to myself. Found the solution by checking "Volume Control" in the VAC control panel.
New problem is now my mic volume is way lower than my game volume. Anyone know of a way to lower the output of "Line 1" to a stream without it effecting what you hear? As in you hear the game at 100% through your headphones/speakers, but people watching your stream hear the game at maybe 50%
OK. the problem here, when have my microphone set to 'listen to this device' I can have to listen to myself talking the entire time. I want people on the stream to hear myself and the game sounds. I want myself to be able to hear the game, and that's it
@BillytheCrayon There is a work around to this problem, and it requires TWO VAC lines, and not just one. Just do everything that is said in the video with the exception of Line 1 listening into Line 2, and the Microphone set to Line 2. Line 1 will practically stay as your "stereo Mix" and the audio signal you'll listening into, while Line 2 will fuse your mix AND your Line 1 into your stream. Enable another line through the VAC control panel.
@hugonium Thank you. I did discover this last night while experimenting with it. I recently tried and am liking a new method for livestreaming though that seems to be working better. I just switched to XSplit broadcaster, and all my problems were solved :)
@MSZSNeoBahamut19 Keep that setup, and use the audio repeater that came with VAC to send Line 1 to Line 2.
The biggest problem with VAC's audio repeater is the latency (lag). Setting the buffer size helps but my computer would occasionally bug out and cut/distort the signal. I'm currently using a software called Wirecast to workout the video and audio streaming, thusly requiring me to use make available ONE VAC Line while Wirecast handles everything else. I highly recommend it over FME.
@hugonium I also noticed that streaming on JTV was extremely laggy (only tried League of Legends) despite me setting the resolution to 1280x720 and putting it at 1000 kbps... I have a good machine (6GB DDR3, Core i7 2.8 GHz, and a ATI 5770) and a solid connection. On my end it showed whatever framerate I wanted gladly without harshly affecting my computer in any noticeable way, yet when I would stream it would look like it was running at 2 FPS in game. However the mouse would move smoothly...
great tut bro helped alot. but i do have one problem when i send the audio from my ps3 to my computer and when i try to stream there is a noticeable lag from the audio game play if that makes sense. any idea how to fix that problem?
@jeffreynieves In the Audio Repeater window is a "Buffer Size" scroll box. Set it as low as possible, but if you set it too low you'll end up with sound artifacts. I usually use 150-200.
@hugonium yes i noticed way back when. i figured it out so now i have the real vr. but unfortunetly it somehow curopted my capture device. so i just whent for the easy way and baught the dam thing lol XD
Hey, when I set up the Line and use the Listen tab to send the sound back to my headphones (or even use Audio Repeater), it works fine, no echo or delay or anything. But when I set Line 1 as my audio device in FME and stream to justin.tv, sound coming from the stream echos at about a 4 second delay... this only happens when I try to stream, and only the stream echos, all other stereo/desktop sounds are fine. Help?
Great tutorial. Two questions: Does it matter which Audio Repeater I use and what parts do I need to buy to get the game cable's volume onto the computer?
ty so much for this dude! i was worrying a hell of alot about my new laptop for xmas not having stereo mix, now i dont have to worry!, btw does the free version last forever, just with limited lines?
@RHossall The free version will work just the same way the full version will. The biggest (and the most annoying) problem with it is the sound-byte of a lady saying it's a demo version every 15-30 seconds when channeling signals down one of its lines. Only use the free version for compatibility purposes.
I'm currently getting swamped with my finals for school, but once I have that completed, I'll try my best to answer all your inquiries during my winter break, or do individual "Teamviewer" sessions with you all.
i can't figure out how to broadcast audio from my desktop. I have to use audio repeater because I don't have the levels tab in the sound devices. However, the repeater won't pick up my desktop.
@Son23 If you have Line 1 under playback set to default, then you should see levels inside it, alongside audio repeater. I found out over the time between this video and now that the Listen tab can bug out and not work at all.
@bosoxdanc1 Open two VAC lines. Send your microphone output into VAC Line 2, and send your VAC Line 1 into VAC Line 2. If you can imagine this, all the signals are converging onto one line and your microphone output isn't getting mixed into your Line 1. Hope this fixes things.

My only problem is I do not have a "listen" tab. Would I have to setup another line to repeat that back to my playback device (i.e., headphones, speakers, whatever), or is there another workaround for Vista Home Basic?
@hugonium Curiously enough, it appears no workaround is required. I have two playback devices connected to my computer -- two speakers, and a headset. When I set the VAC Line 1 as the playback device, the audio which was previously routed through the speakers, for some inexplicable reason, played in the headset.
There is no Line 1 on this laptop D:
