@Pipedreamerboy An instrument or two from Ben Boldt, a handful of soundfonts, and Apple Jam Pack instruments as well. None of the instruments here came with the program. I've mentioned the specifics in a few comments on this upload. Hopefully you'll get some use out of it, if that's what you're interested in.
Hey , Great work . love the fact that you used nothing but garageband ! lol ( many dont like it yet now i can slap this video on their faces ) P.S I was wondering what was the purpose behind using the master tempo change?and why did you use such detailed tempo changes? I work on music too but quite haven't worked on film scores.
@vishalxyzrepsol It's a good program, despite its limitations. The tempo changes here were mostly to lengthen notes that I should have written as being held for much longer. They may appear detailed, but it's also a cheap trick to fix not having a slower fade to places where I added automation points with the wrong shape. Thanks for listening. Good luck on your projects.
@josephizzlle Thank you, and thank you. It would be great if it were a viable option as a career, but no, I'm not studying music or anything artistic. However, I do listen to a couple hours worth of classical music and film scores every day. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say that it's leaving some kind of an impression or helping me to learn a thing or two.
@JoEads94 Though I haven't seen much or read any of the series, I imagine Narnia did very well with Harry Gregson-Williams. Thanks for the thought. It seems to go along with some other comments here about fantasy-adventure music.
great composition! Wonderful beginning and many nice build ups (have no problems with them)..love the tunes at 1:02.. well done, even if you say it's only a draft. For me it's like a short filmscore cue. Listening to many of your works, this piece is still my favourite, I don't know why..
@istdasnochMusik Thank you! It was supposed to sound something like a cue from a soundtrack, but it's pretty amateur and very much a draft. Thank you again for giving my other uploads a listen. For some reason quite a few others listeners received this well, though really I'm not sure why. It's been a welcome surprise.
@iBeViewin The 'Flying' theme from 'E.T. The Extra Terrestrial' builds but holds off on what listeners come to want to hear until about the two minute mark. After that point, some people might call the rest of the composition magical, but without the parts that came before that cue it wouldn't have had the same effect on the audience.
In a sense that was the idea here, but I never finished this little piece because I didn't and still don't know quite how. Maybe with time. Thanks for listening.
@kinghellick Yer but it had more of a theme, this is more notes or there is a theme but I can't hear it. Fair enough it is a draft, it was just I kept expecting it to build onto atleast one more higher chord and then it just didnt satisfy. I am listening to the flying theme now, fair enough what you said but atleast it isn't annoying. But in the end of the day, you are composer and you could always build it up the way you like. I am not one to judge. But yer, it was just a thought.
@iBeViewin One reason why it was so hard to figure out how to continue with this piece was because I didn't know how to combine the preceding parts into any type of cohesive thematic expression, in contrast to John Williams and how he wrote that Flying theme.
A couple newer uploads here may show progress in developing themes, but it really depends on what a listener (like you) hears than what I say; feedback is welcome and often helpful. It's one reason why I always respond to comments.
@kinghellick Yer, its all about development :) I hope my comments have been welcome. I didn't mean to put down your work, I think it is great regardless :)
@iBeViewin Your comments have of course been welcome. I didn't get the impression you meant to put down my work- you brought up valid points worth consideration, so thank you, and thank you again for the kind words as well.
@CatCoussinets Yes, all the instruments I mentioned in the last reply are compatible with GarageBand. Not all soundfonts are compatible, but I verified those that I mentioned.
A nice percussion instrument is called '+Orch Battery,' it's on sf2midi.com. Put the .sf2 file (soundfont) here: Your Hard Drive > Library > Audio > Sounds > Banks
For a quick tutorial on how to load them, search 'PolyPhontics Sound Banks in GarageBand' on YouTube. It's by a user called 'SonicAmigosSupport.'
@TheClankMan Some of the music from the Zelda series music is surprisingly good. Thank you. If I really knew what I was doing- musically speaking, it would be great to have something of mine in a game, or anything really. That may never happen, but it's still a nice thought.
@CatCoussinets The free instruments here are either soundfonts from sf2midi.com and Ben Boldt instrument packs (Google his name to find them). The others are from the Symphony Orchestra Jam Pack, which Apple discontinued. A user named chrisdkdk commented below on how to find it online, but I can't vouch for the method.
If you'd like, I can name a few free soundfonts that are compatible with GarageBand. They may help you get started on an orchestral project.
@superRobster071 Some of the instruments here are from an Apple Jack Pack, others are from Ben Boldt, and there are also a few soundfonts. It's been a bit too long to remember for sure. Even the best GarageBand-compatible instruments in the brass family are a little lacking at best. If I knew of anything free or inexpensive worth recommending, I'd let you know. If you find anything notable, you're welcome to post information on it in a reply here. Good luck!
@breezyjrmusic Most of the instruments I had access to at the time were of either only fair or poor quality. Adding more instruments of the same type (like flutes from an Apple Jam Pack and a flutes section soundfont) helped a little, so I added as many to the project as I could work with. The result still only sounds OK, but it could have been worse. Thanks for listening.
@AaronGRandall A few others of mentioned the Zelda series. Given how much they liked the game's music, I guess this draft got something right. Thank you for listening.
I'm great with Photoshop, the other iLife applications, Final Cut Pro, Premier, Audacity......but for some reason every time I try to work in GarageBand I get really frustrated early on and wind up stopping. I've been composing now for about 15 years but for some weird reason I can't force myself to get past the "learner's hump" in GB. Having said that, I think the things you've created on GB are really fantastic. Glad to see not EVERYone has the same problem as me. ;-)
@ShootAndSpin If you're proficient with Final Cut Pro and Premier, GarageBand shouldn't prove too difficult. The learning curve for composing in a DAW like this must be frustrating if you've been writing it out on paper for years, but for someone like me, it's the only option. If you decide to stick with it and start to figure it out, I hope you have some luck. Thanks for listening.
@forcazia123 Good timpani for free is hard to find. The free soundfonts I have (and I don't necessarily find them very good) are 'Instruments Timpani.sf2,' 'Timpani vince.sf2,' 'Timpani_Long_rolls.sf2,' 'Timpani_Tune.sf2," and "timpani.sf2"
Most if not all of those are on sf2midi.com for free. The site is a little slow, but the files aren't very big. If you end up trying out those soundfonts, you may want to use more than one at once. They aren't very good as solo instruments. Good luck.
@kinghellick Go to kickasstorrents and search for garageband jam pack. there's a 20 gb jam pack there with everything you'll ever need. Including instruments and loops. Just sayin'
@MTLguitarist98 By adding automation points to the master track. If you've selected it to be visible, click on its drop down list (which is probably showing volume by default), and select tempo. Then at the right, instead of volume, you'll be able to add tempo automation points along the timeline where you'd like it to change. Good luck!
Congratulations! I have a question, Is posible to get the Complete Score of the Theme? How you made every instrument, playing on a midi keyboard? Or note by note, i´m trying to start and know the posibilities of the program... Thanks! And scuse my bad english..
@arlequin431 Sorry, but there was never a score or even an template file for the instruments in this project. Opening it with Logic Pro might allow me to export a score of some type, but it would be a little bit messy, especially with tempo changes on the master track. Given that I even can't read music, I wouldn't be able to correct poor notation. Thank you for expressing your interest, though. I can refer the names of some nice soundfonts, if you'd like. That might help you get started.
@masterfox72 This piece isn't too complex for a beginner, or very long- anyone with a little time could write this. YouTube certainly has its share of amateur musicians with better compositions, but I'm glad you found your way to this one. Thanks for listening.
@masterfox72 Thanks again. There were a few measures more that followed (about fifteen seconds worth), but it didn't turn out very well, and I abandoned it. There are a handful of other uploads now though- maybe there's something else you might like. If not, that's ok, too.
@Mr360Sam Maybe it sound alright if a real orchestra performed it, but the composition might need a little work first. Having said that, it's nice to hear that it works for you as it is. Thanks for listening.
@jacobcs Thank you! This little draft's age is rearing its ugly head in my eyes, but it's nice to know you liked it regardless of its rough edges. To answer your questions- I don't know anything about music theory. I don't play any instruments or read music either, but it would be nice. This project probably took a couple weeks, but it's hard to remember after this long. How much time do you put into your compositions?
@kinghellick This is pretty damn good for a garageband piece with no theory to back it up. As for how long it takes me to compose (classical/piano/etc) it really just depends on how strong my idea is, ill lay out as much of it as i can in one sitting (few hours or more) and come back day after day and tweak small things. Keep doing what you're doing!
@jacobcs Thank you again. You sound like a much faster composer than I am. I tend to write for most of the orchestra, or at least a section measure by measure- probably not the best approach. I hope you'll keep at it with your music, too.
@wigglywig1 House music tutorials brought up a result for this upload? That seems a little strange, but I'm glad to find you liked what you found. Given that this is one of the first times I tried a more symphonic orchestration, it did take some time. Thanks for listening. And good luck on finding some tutorials!
@dtsprinkle1 It is, but other DAWs with other instruments do much more, and the sound really is amazing. This sounds a bit like something from technology of ten or more years ago- which wasn't all that bad, it's just gotten much better.
@irsan5777 The instruments here pale in comparison to products from companies like EWQL, most in this project are from the (discontinued) Symphony Orchestra Apple Jam Pack. There may also be a harp from Ben Boldt.
@eddisaurs Thank you! For this piece I didn't record anything. If real instruments were available and if I knew how to play them, that might be one thing, like for a solo. Sampled instruments cover people like me pretty well, fortunately. With a little tweaking, a few quality virtual instruments out there sound good enough for solo passages.
@Not2bseen94 If you have a few good dollars to spend and use Logic Pro, or some other DAW like Ableton, there are companies like CineSamples and EastWest/Quantum Leap that offer quality instruments.
If you'd prefer not to spend, you might like a soundfont called "+Orch Battery.sf2" from sf2midi.com. It's compatible with GarageBand and Logic. You may want to see an installation tutorial if you're unfamiliar with soundfonts.
Thanks for listening. Best of luck to you with your music.
You are doing what I could only dream of doing with Garageband. I thought I was doing something great with 12 tracks. This is where our modern technology shines. And you have do so brilliantly. Don't ever think you shouldn't be the modern day Beethoven, Chopin, Debusey, or Sebelius. Keep composing. Keep creating. Let the listener bestow the titles on you. Peace
@Gavin1962 You're very kind and supportive to say that, thank you. This piece was a start where I used a few compositional ideas and technical tricks that proved useful, and that are present and further developed in my newer material.
More tracks doesn't always mean better material- you could do quite a lot, and probably very well with twelve, depending on a few criteria.
Those names belong to highly accomplished men. I aspire for creativity like theirs, if only in small steps. Thanks again.
@DylanKLJ Thank you! I can understand that not every genre appeals to every musician or listener. Orchestral music outside of something like a movie soundtrack didn't always interest me, and it was years before I could appreciate the boring stuff on the radio. Depending on your current interests, maybe I could make a few suggestions that might appeal to you. If not, that's also ok. Thanks for giving this piece a chance.
@IepicIsoundIstudiosI WoW is very popular in some crowds, but I'm not familiar with much more than the title, let alone music from it. In fact, I confess to not knowing it even had music. If you have any listening suggestions, you're welcome to share them here.
@kinghellick Hahah there is indeed music. Really, listen to any of it. It's all beautiful. some of it is "battle music" and is not so much what you're doing here. But definitely check it out. Just look up World of Warcraft Soundtrack. Or listen to "Stormwind." Or "Wrath of the lich king" or "The Burning Legion." Those are all i can remember off the top of my head :)
@PHNURR Mediafire? Maybe some viewers would like that (and I appreciate the interest) but I doubt there's much demand for a download. After all, this is only a beginner's draft. SoundCloud might be a good alternative- playback and download from the same page, but it might be best to wait until I've written better material with higher quality instruments. Thanks for listening.
@greennin Epic Hollywood films are beyond my scope. Thanks for your vote of confidence, though. Maybe I'll achieve amateur composition status in a few years.
@digg427 Masterpiece? I would never use that word for my work, but thanks for your vote of confidence. Beethoven was a master who will likely not be outdone or outshone by someone much like me, but it's an encouraging thought. Thank you. I'll do my best.
Garageband is very limited: I'm working with Logic 9 and some East West Instruments for a long time and it is really the best! See my personal videos ;)
East West offers some quality instruments. CineSamples is noteworthy as well, even if only for the very impressive 'CineBrass' library. I've recently begun work in Logic 9 as well.
Thanks for the suggestions. Best of luck to you on your projects.
@informalcrabmeat It's been so long that I've forgotten, and it probably wasn't actually anything I did intentionally. Sorry about that.
If you'd like a nice flute instrument with vibrato, Google "vibrato_flute_sec.sf2" and the first result, a page on sf2midi.com provides a great soundfont, which is compatible with GarageBand and Logic. Hopefully you use one of those two titles, and you'll find the thing useful. Good luck!
@TasteForDisaster Apple appears to have discontinued them, but the Jam Packs are still available on Amazon.com, but in very limited quantity. There's presently a single listing on eBay with all four packs. It's priced at $30.00 and zero bids.
If you'd prefer not to spend, you could risk piracy. I imagine there's a torrent somewhere out there- but unless you're absolutely sure of what you're doing, I would advise against it.
Google Ben Boldt. He has free instruments, and a great sounding harp.
@kinghellick I found 1 pack for $120 on amazon, if I can get 4 packs for $30, then I'll probably buy it. my brother knows a lot about pirating, I might ask him if I need to. I'm not against pirating, but if I can have a physical copy for a moderate ammount, then I'm willing to pay, because I'm REALLY into music. :) thanks, i'll also look into BenBoldt
@fuzzymist Thank you! It can be hard to stay original. There so many composers around that it seems like almost everyone will inevitably write something that sounds a little reminiscent of another's work, or style. It's something I try to avoid. Luckily, there have been few remarks about that so far.
@3METALover3 Haha. My compositions are far from divine, but thank you.
Presently, I'm near the point of outgrowing GarageBand, but I don't intend to stop using it just yet. Abelton may every well be a good choice, but I hesitate to purchase software and instruments that I may also outgrow. That said, to properly get my hands on the best tools available would likely result in a bill of... perhaps USD $5,000. That kind of investment is a bit expensive for a simple pastime. It's tempting, though.
@klowe007 Despite how much I've managed to improve the realism of instrumentation with GarageBand.. the software has its limits. You, and the others who have suggested upgrades are probably right to insist on it. I'll be sure to keep your input in mind, thanks.
@SirC0zyy This piece doesn't sound particularly realistic, but some later uploads might. Another upload of mine 'The Atrium v2 pt.2' has much better strings.
For GarageBand, at least, realistic strings involves mixing a variety of the best virtual instruments you can find like a real orchestral has its layout, and creating automation points to control their volume (and perhaps other dynamics) like how real strings grow louder and fade. I hope that helps. Thanks for listening.
@TaintedRave Thank you! This was only about draft quality, which was about as good as I could do at the time. Since this upload I've managed to improve the realism of instrumentation in other projects little bit by little bit. You're right about the better software, but it's hard to know where to begin. Suggestions are welcome.
@kinghellick If you look at my channel, you'll realize fast enough that I'm into straight up electro and dubstep, so I don't usually mess about with orchestral instruments. However, I would still recommend Ableton Live. It's the program I work with, and it's very versatile. I was coming from Garageband too, and the transition wasn't too hard.
To get the most realistic sounds possible, it's all about what VSTs you use :) I'd say google the life out of that.
@TaintedRave When listeners comment, I always look at their channels. I did notice that you were into electro and dubstep, which made your words both surprising and encouraging. So, thank you again.
Ableton doesn't look half bad, but I'd prefer to wait for something with exceptional brass. Mid-range and higher end virtual instruments can be impressive, but the brass sections often underwhelm. Even EastWest/Quantum Leap 'Hollywood Brass' (which is probably by far the best) falters now and then.
@kinghellick Well what I did when I wanted to implement a piano section in a track once was go to Garageband, export the piano part and bring that into Ableton. If the only problem is the brass, you could probably do that and otherwise keep the rest of the project running in Ableton.
The big bonuses you'd get from switching: best warping engine (very useful), easier control over automations (I hate entering them in GB) and better built-in plugins with more control over how to use them.
@homelesspimps GarageBand can handle only AU and SF2 in addition to the format of its Apple Jam Pack instruments. If you absolutely need a VST in GarageBand, you may be able to convert it using FXpansion VST-AU Adapter. The software is USD $99 to buy.
Some clever users have managed to modify other types of virtual instruments to function in GB, but it requires a little skillful work, and even then, the instruments won't be quite like they are in the software for which they're designed.
@kinghellick I just discovered something, I was trying to recreate the "rude boy" synth that skrillex made, and I went to all these options, and there is this option that has fm8 on it. I clicked on it, and the program opened up, I can play the keys on it, and the sound bars on garageband will go up. But i can't record on it. if i make a sound on it fm8, and then play it on garageband, it's just silent. So I don't know what to do. Any ideas?
@homelesspimps As much as I'd like to help, I'm unfamiliar with fm8. It sounds like the sound isn't being transferred at some point, but I'm at a loss as to explain what that might be. Maybe a tutorial about something similar will give you an idea that works out. Good luck.
@327bran My last response was a little incoherent and didn't really answer your question, sorry about that. GarageBand may be more cooperative with multitrack projects if you avoid running other software in the background. Sometimes I only have better luck after a reboot. Your computer may also require more ram to properly load and make use of more than just a few virtual instruments. Whatever the case is, I hope you can get it figured out. Good luck.
@zatch145 Skyrim? I'm not familiar with it, but I'll look it up. If it sounds like it could be 'from' anything, then that's a nice compliment. Thanks for listening.
@RawrDubstep That's not a bad idea. I did actually try something like that shortly after uploading, but the material didn't turn out so well. Even this little draft is just ok. Thanks for the suggestion, though. Most of the pieces here are short because I run out of ideas.
@thejesster1993 There's no need to worry about feeling like a dumb GarageBand user- one of my favorite pastimes is writing little pieces of music- and I can't read the notation.
Yes, everything here was done in GarageBand. It's slow and tedious to do it that way, but it's the only way I know how. My most recent uploads show some better qualities of more realistic instrumentation, if you're interested in hearing it. Thanks for listening.
Yet more proof that you can do good music in any application. Well done!

Glad to see not EVERYone has the same problem as me. ;-)
ShootAndSpin 2 weeks ago
@ShootAndSpin If you're proficient with Final Cut Pro and Premier, GarageBand shouldn't prove too difficult. The learning curve for composing in a DAW like this must be frustrating if you've been writing it out on paper for years, but for someone like me, it's the only option. If you decide to stick with it and start to figure it out, I hope you have some luck. Thanks for listening.

Do you know where I can get a good timpani sound for free
forcazia123 3 weeks ago
@forcazia123 Good timpani for free is hard to find. The free soundfonts I have (and I don't necessarily find them very good) are 'Instruments Timpani.sf2,' 'Timpani vince.sf2,' 'Timpani_Long_rolls.sf2,' 'Timpani_Tune.sf2," and "timpani.sf2"
Most if not all of those are on sf2midi.com for free. The site is a little slow, but the files aren't very big. If you end up trying out those soundfonts, you may want to use more than one at once. They aren't very good as solo instruments. Good luck.

how do you change tempo in the middle of the song?
MTLguitarist98 1 month ago
@MTLguitarist98 By adding automation points to the master track. If you've selected it to be visible, click on its drop down list (which is probably showing volume by default), and select tempo. Then at the right, instead of volume, you'll be able to add tempo automation points along the timeline where you'd like it to change. Good luck!

Congratulations! I have a question, Is posible to get the Complete Score of the Theme? How you made every instrument, playing on a midi keyboard? Or note by note, i´m trying to start and know the posibilities of the program... Thanks! And scuse my bad english..
arlequin431 1 month ago
@arlequin431 Sorry, but there was never a score or even an template file for the instruments in this project. Opening it with Logic Pro might allow me to export a score of some type, but it would be a little bit messy, especially with tempo changes on the master track. Given that I even can't read music, I wouldn't be able to correct poor notation. Thank you for expressing your interest, though. I can refer the names of some nice soundfonts, if you'd like. That might help you get started.

masterfox72 1 month ago
@masterfox72 This piece isn't too complex for a beginner, or very long- anyone with a little time could write this. YouTube certainly has its share of amateur musicians with better compositions, but I'm glad you found your way to this one. Thanks for listening.

@kinghellick I agree its not that complex, however, it still is very pleasant sounding. I would love to hear an extended version if it exists.

man this is really great! are you educated in music theory? how long did this take you?
jacobcs 1 month ago
@jacobcs Thank you! This little draft's age is rearing its ugly head in my eyes, but it's nice to know you liked it regardless of its rough edges. To answer your questions- I don't know anything about music theory. I don't play any instruments or read music either, but it would be nice. This project probably took a couple weeks, but it's hard to remember after this long. How much time do you put into your compositions?
kinghellick 1 month ago
@kinghellick This is pretty damn good for a garageband piece with no theory to back it up. As for how long it takes me to compose (classical/piano/etc) it really just depends on how strong my idea is, ill lay out as much of it as i can in one sitting (few hours or more) and come back day after day and tweak small things. Keep doing what you're doing!
jacobcs 1 month ago
@jacobcs Thank you again. You sound like a much faster composer than I am. I tend to write for most of the orchestra, or at least a section measure by measure- probably not the best approach. I hope you'll keep at it with your music, too.

That was absolutely incredible. I came on Youtube to look up tutorials on house music! But what a pleasant surprise, must have taken ages.

eddisaurs 1 month ago
@eddisaurs Thank you! For this piece I didn't record anything. If real instruments were available and if I knew how to play them, that might be one thing, like for a solo. Sampled instruments cover people like me pretty well, fortunately. With a little tweaking, a few quality virtual instruments out there sound good enough for solo passages.

Do you know anywhere where i could download orchestral percussion loops or instruments?
thats the one thing i do not have in my songs. Great job by the way!
Not2bseen94 1 month ago

Peace
Gavin1962 1 month ago
@Gavin1962 You're very kind and supportive to say that, thank you. This piece was a start where I used a few compositional ideas and technical tricks that proved useful, and that are present and further developed in my newer material.
More tracks doesn't always mean better material- you could do quite a lot, and probably very well with twelve, depending on a few criteria.
Those names belong to highly accomplished men. I aspire for creativity like theirs, if only in small steps. Thanks again.

Good luck!

kinghellick 2 months ago
@kinghellick thanks, do you know where I can get that pack? and also the harp sounded nice. are they free? can i get them off the apple store app?
TasteForDisaster 1 month ago
@TasteForDisaster Apple appears to have discontinued them, but the Jam Packs are still available on Amazon.com, but in very limited quantity. There's presently a single listing on eBay with all four packs. It's priced at $30.00 and zero bids.
If you'd prefer not to spend, you could risk piracy. I imagine there's a torrent somewhere out there- but unless you're absolutely sure of what you're doing, I would advise against it.
Google Ben Boldt. He has free instruments, and a great sounding harp.
kinghellick 1 month ago
@kinghellick I found 1 pack for $120 on amazon, if I can get 4 packs for $30, then I'll probably buy it. my brother knows a lot about pirating, I might ask him if I need to. I'm not against pirating, but if I can have a physical copy for a moderate ammount, then I'm willing to pay, because I'm REALLY into music. :) thanks, i'll also look into BenBoldt

fuzzymist 2 months ago
@fuzzymist Thank you! It can be hard to stay original. There so many composers around that it seems like almost everyone will inevitably write something that sounds a little reminiscent of another's work, or style. It's something I try to avoid. Luckily, there have been few remarks about that so far.

Get ableton, you would be a god.
3METALover3 2 months ago
@3METALover3 Haha. My compositions are far from divine, but thank you.
Presently, I'm near the point of outgrowing GarageBand, but I don't intend to stop using it just yet. Abelton may every well be a good choice, but I hesitate to purchase software and instruments that I may also outgrow. That said, to properly get my hands on the best tools available would likely result in a bill of... perhaps USD $5,000. That kind of investment is a bit expensive for a simple pastime. It's tempting, though.
kinghellick 2 months ago
@kinghellick Yeah i outgrew garageband a long time ago, or at least wanted to grow out of it. lol i love my ableton live now

klowe007 2 months ago
@klowe007 Despite how much I've managed to improve the realism of instrumentation with GarageBand.. the software has its limits. You, and the others who have suggested upgrades are probably right to insist on it. I'll be sure to keep your input in mind, thanks.
kinghellick 2 months ago
@kinghellick DUDE! HOW. How do you make the orchestral strings sound realistic?!
SirC0zyy 2 months ago
@SirC0zyy This piece doesn't sound particularly realistic, but some later uploads might. Another upload of mine 'The Atrium v2 pt.2' has much better strings.
For GarageBand, at least, realistic strings involves mixing a variety of the best virtual instruments you can find like a real orchestral has its layout, and creating automation points to control their volume (and perhaps other dynamics) like how real strings grow louder and fade. I hope that helps. Thanks for listening.
kinghellick 2 months ago
Man... I hate Garageband. But this is... pretty awesome. Props. I'm sure you could do some real insane stuff if you had better software though.
TaintedRave 2 months ago
@TaintedRave Thank you! This was only about draft quality, which was about as good as I could do at the time. Since this upload I've managed to improve the realism of instrumentation in other projects little bit by little bit. You're right about the better software, but it's hard to know where to begin. Suggestions are welcome.
kinghellick 2 months ago
@kinghellick If you look at my channel, you'll realize fast enough that I'm into straight up electro and dubstep, so I don't usually mess about with orchestral instruments. However, I would still recommend Ableton Live. It's the program I work with, and it's very versatile. I was coming from Garageband too, and the transition wasn't too hard.
To get the most realistic sounds possible, it's all about what VSTs you use :) I'd say google the life out of that.
TaintedRave 2 months ago
@TaintedRave When listeners comment, I always look at their channels. I did notice that you were into electro and dubstep, which made your words both surprising and encouraging. So, thank you again.
Ableton doesn't look half bad, but I'd prefer to wait for something with exceptional brass. Mid-range and higher end virtual instruments can be impressive, but the brass sections often underwhelm. Even EastWest/Quantum Leap 'Hollywood Brass' (which is probably by far the best) falters now and then.
kinghellick 2 months ago
@kinghellick Well what I did when I wanted to implement a piano section in a track once was go to Garageband, export the piano part and bring that into Ableton. If the only problem is the brass, you could probably do that and otherwise keep the rest of the project running in Ableton.
The big bonuses you'd get from switching: best warping engine (very useful), easier control over automations (I hate entering them in GB) and better built-in plugins with more control over how to use them.
TaintedRave 2 months ago
Can someone please tell me if it is possible to put vst's from ableton live, fm8, or anything like that onto garageband? I really need help.
homelesspimps 2 months ago
@homelesspimps GarageBand can handle only AU and SF2 in addition to the format of its Apple Jam Pack instruments. If you absolutely need a VST in GarageBand, you may be able to convert it using FXpansion VST-AU Adapter. The software is USD $99 to buy.
Some clever users have managed to modify other types of virtual instruments to function in GB, but it requires a little skillful work, and even then, the instruments won't be quite like they are in the software for which they're designed.
kinghellick 2 months ago
@kinghellick I just discovered something, I was trying to recreate the "rude boy" synth that skrillex made, and I went to all these options, and there is this option that has fm8 on it. I clicked on it, and the program opened up, I can play the keys on it, and the sound bars on garageband will go up. But i can't record on it. if i make a sound on it fm8, and then play it on garageband, it's just silent. So I don't know what to do. Any ideas?
homelesspimps 2 months ago
@homelesspimps As much as I'd like to help, I'm unfamiliar with fm8. It sounds like the sound isn't being transferred at some point, but I'm at a loss as to explain what that might be. Maybe a tutorial about something similar will give you an idea that works out. Good luck.

327bran 2 months ago
@327bran My last response was a little incoherent and didn't really answer your question, sorry about that. GarageBand may be more cooperative with multitrack projects if you avoid running other software in the background. Sometimes I only have better luck after a reboot. Your computer may also require more ram to properly load and make use of more than just a few virtual instruments. Whatever the case is, I hope you can get it figured out. Good luck.
