  • allmost like the "santana shreds"

  • this sucked

  • Poor Keith. He's made it clear to the listener that he hates doing this.

  • If you listen carefully Keith plays a rendition of the bassline to Mile's "So what" at 1.45... Maybe incidental...

  • Of course Keith is great, but Alias was such a beast too.

  • What is this group/project called ?? thanks in advance

    -Rumle

  • Of course it's not drugs. Keith Jarrett always really FELT his music. Those "cumfaces" he makes are only natural and his way of being.

  • I love Keith's work throughout his career and especially in this unique period.

  • This hasn't aged that well.. I like the Rhodes distortion though.. Love it when the band kicks back in! Don't know about the hair?

  • @Chxll Interestingly keith said when miles had an all black group everyone was buzzing off the black power thing not realising that keith is actually mixed eastern european

  • To the person that said rmi piano,,, it's a red fender contempo organ. A rare breed. But later miles used the yamaha contempo organ yz 20 or something.

  • the glenn gould of jazz

  • later keith would play some of the same bach pieces that gould was famous for - he was also known for his humming on classical recording

  • I honestly don't think he was on any drugs. I would be offended if someone said I was on drugs based on my musical performance. He knows the character of each sound. It becomes a part of him. Big deal.

  • if only this was on his piano...

    great all the same

  • He is FULL of various DRUGS substances.. I think

  • You've obviously never watched much Keith Jarrett. He is ALWAYS on a drug - the drug of whatever GOD it is he's channelling when he plays. No artificial substances whatsoever - the man is a voice from the divine when he plays like this.

  • why is everyone arguin about race, this is jazz, there is no such thing as a jazz musician that is racist, its just not relevant.

  • who cares. hes got a wicked moustache

  • Outside the chord, inside the music !

  • A guy as gifted as Keith could find a way to make music with a cinder-block if he had to.

  • looks like the other keyboard is an RMI

  • The God who created Keith is a deep God.

  • Jarretts aversion to electric instruments has nothing to do with his religious beliefs. After he left Davis' group, he swore off electric instruments and alienated many in the fusion genre by declaring electric instruments a crutch. Some feel this attitude belies a simmering arrogance. Whether one aggrees with him or not, his talent is undeniable. He is without question one of the greatest piano improvisers of all time.

  • @eberniewon Improvisers in general.

Witch Rhodes is that he's playing?

He's Playing a Fender rhodes mark 1 suitcase. This modeled is faved for rhodes player. All wooden Keys and tine harp stand. This model was a fender (CBS) and rhodes together. Later on in 74 fender droped its name and let Harold Rhodes take back his production. This is the 3rd gen Fender rhodes the first was the fiesta top second was the silver top, the one that was on Bitches Brew!

  • I've read somewhere, that he doesn't play on electrical instruments, due to his religious beliefs. He only played this, to play with Miles.

  • He only played this because it's what Miles told him to play. He never used electronic instruments before or after his stint with Miles' band. It has nothing to do with religion.

  • ...a Miles ma che j'hai dato?

  • It's funny how Keith Jarrett looked so racially ambiguous with the afro back then. I wonder if he would have been as accepted as he was had he not fostered that image?

  • There seams to be things that are way more important to you than music. I don't think that's the case with Keith Jarret. So why you dont just go back and read your hair style or other fashion magazines and stay away from commenting music, I think thats better for all of us!

  • Not true dude, don't be so agressive!

Many black musicians didn't want white musicians in their band, like some kind of loyalty towards their fellows. Although in this case it wouldn't matter if Keith was white as Dave Leibman was already in the band and Miles already played with white musicians before. But the first time he hired a white musician (I think it was Bill Evans the pianist) his choice has been really rejected by the black community (check out Miles' autobiography).

  • Well this was an answer to delasteclas, next page.

So think before you treat someone like that and judge him as a racist.

  • How does the Percussionist make his conga moan like that? (2:15)

  • wet your finger and slide it across the head. the friction causes a vibration which creates the sound. takes a little practice, though, you need just the right combination of pressure and wetness on the finger to create the friction.

  • Gahhh!!! I tried it but I can only do it with a drumstick...my fingers don't work :(

  • keep practicing it took me awhile strike the drum and then slide. make sure you push the flesh of your middle finger towards the tip with your thumb.

  • WTF he have to blink???!

  • miles knew to match hendrix u were gonna have to become totally unconscience and become 1 with the instrument and the music....bill evans has worked hard to put hendrix into perspective..look up evans and hendrix on you tube

  • damn otha,you are one deep brotha!respect!

  • @othajr23 what exactly do you mean?

  • LOL!!! Jazz musicians on acid!! I read an article recently that quoted Jarrett saying he almost didn't play with this group because Miles strictly wanted an "electric" band only, which meant no Steinway B for Keith... Being a self proclaimed purist (whatever the hell that means) Jarret almost said no, but he couldn't resist all the free acid and coke Miles could bring to the table... Hahaaah true story, all except the whole acid and coke part...

    BILL EVANS IS KING!!!!

  • k palle!!!

  • It took me 5 minutes to figure out what you just said. I still don't fully know what you said.

  • Who the hell voted this down? It's one of the best comments on Youtube.

  • Which do you refer to?

  • stikyfinger's comment from 10 months ago. It read:

"junky ... mdrrrr trois notes et de l'hero ... stop the coke and you heard .. shit !!!! mdrrrrr and keith ( kate ? ) whit drug is not a good idear .. whitout ...too ! pliééééé a blues man stop drink say " we have not ever thing that song ?? "a rasta stop weed say " what a shit music ! " ... stop the drug and heard ... you can't ! HA HA HA"

    Nice. :-D

  • Haha this guy was also definitely on drugs!

  • This is herky-jerkier for him than normal, during the "freak out" parts. I think this is because he's fighting the electronic sound. His characteristic movements are more fluid on acoustic, I think in part because of the sonority of the notes on acoustic; they are more rounded, clear, ringing... it's as if his body is trying to drink that certain sound quality out of the electric notes, but it isn't there... it's an entirely different animal. WONDERFUL STUFF, regardless!

  • How rare is this? Keith playing an electronic instrument?

  • During Miles period, he plays electronics all the time. On the highly electrified Tribute to Jack Johnson he even plays a Farfisa organ.

  • I'm pretty sure it's Herbie Hancock on that album

  • I think Herbie played Rhodes, and Jarrett played Farfisa. Easy enough to check. Thanks.

  • haha ok maybe I'm not so sure then.. brilliant music whoever it was

  • Just read a source that places Jarrett on Rhodes and Hancock on the organ. Always thought the other way around. Anyway. Good stuff. Thanks.

  • Ohh cool, probably what I read too, you never know with Miles...

  • Witch Rhodes is that he's playing?

  • The hair!

  • Wow, nice. I've never seen someone so charismatic when they're playing.

  • you rock crazy keith!!!!!!

  • where the fuck can i get a full video of this? Absolutely extraordinary.

  • Hahaha, did Miles think THEY are crazy? Hahaha.

  • This is the sound! My Mk 1 needs tuning.

  • what is your mk's building year? or simply said is it a fender rhodes or a rhodes?

  • Keith Jarrett Music is absolut of jazz.

  • this man is definately outta this world...

  • That is fair out there.....

  • bizzarro awheuihewa

  • The beginning part of this reminds of the organist from Deep Purple. *LoL*

  • errrr that'll be john lord then ;-)

  • jeeez this seems hippy-dippy in retrospect....talk about over-emoting...but i still love it.

  • Miles once said that around this period he sometimes listened to his own band, thinking "they are crazy"

  • that mark I is the maddest i've ever heard, it's more a mix between the II en the V and a Dyno mark 1

  • these drugs are not sold in the market, bro. they come inside artists that are born only once a century

  • i want the same drugs

  • Watching an artist at full emotional abandon is truely inspiring. This is shows the times where there was a long drawn out civil war in Vietnam and by 1971 art and music was exploding into something new and never tied before. So before you all judge these artists, realize that art imitates life. I say we need another art revolution today and start playing our asses off like Miles Davis did in 1971-ish times and offered a platform for people like Keith Jarret to explode into our world.

  • Vraiment ennuyant.

  • well i guess french II is paying off because i can understand what you're saying

  • this is too experimential.. well I dont really like free jazz.

Keith Jarret is much better in another performances.

  • Impressing, fascinating !

  • he stole those keys from miles davis. they sound nice distorted

  • needs less goddamn bells

  • ~legend!~

  • I love the sound of an old mark 1 Fender Rhodes

  • Luke Skywalker totally stole his look from Keith Jarrett.

  • That´s the famous "Look Skywalker"

  • jazz, jazz, jazz. Magnificient!

  • that's one cool looking rhodes organ he's playing with his left hand

  • amazing jarrett!!! wow... unfortunately also winner of the Palmes D'or for most annoying editing...

  • Keith Jarrett hates the electric (rhodes) piano. But he plays it like noone else. HE is amazing!

  • It's been said the only reason he even played the electric piano was because he wanted to play with Miles. He HATED the music they were playing, but he couldn't pass up the chance to work with Miles.

Check out the liner notes in the Cellar Door boxset, where Keith makes some really disparaging comments about the keyboards he used with Miles.

  • This particular approach reminds me of some of Frank Zappa's music.

  • Geez, the camera work is terrible, all that jump cutting. Too artristic for its own good. But a good slice of what the band sounded like on that tour. Too bad DeJohnettte had left my then.

  • Keith is never unoriginal. How? How dammit HOW!?!?

  • keith is a master!

  • lsd

  • great!

  • This band is WAY out of the ordinary. High level shit here. Thanks for posting.

  • Keith rocks the shit on this one... and Mike Henderson is probably the tightest bassist, ever.

  • Keith always looks like he's trying to shit out a watermelon when he plays!

  • You're not really feeling the music unless you get an "O" face. I've tried to stop mine when I play and it's impossible.

  • he's a bit of a savant. glad he's not playing acoustic here. need to keep the microphone far away from that man's mouth :P

  • he is the god of all the keyboards

  • OH yeah. Got this on the DVD 'electric blue' live in Isle of White. A cool gig.

  • Thats a cool DVD but its not the same gig. this is from 1971 in Berlin. Isle of Wight was 1969 with Chick Corea and Airto in the band.

  • Really! Thanks for pointing that out. You mean there's another DVD gig out there with this band. WOW. A lot of this band finally coming out of the woodwork. Thanks Orangefunk.

  • Its not an officially available DVD. I think its a recording from several generations of VHS tapes, probably from a long forgotten broadcast in the 70s or 80s. I got it a long time ago in a trade.

  • i got da whole fing on dvd no joke

  • But Isle of Wight had an incredible freakout session by Jarrett on Rhodes, too. Only it was a better Rhodes. :-D

  • I think it was an RMI piano piano on that occasion. :-)

  • doh! piano piano... = piano! ;-)
