what if the person attacking from behind locked in the bear hug before you could react? would the technique still work?

@airsoftwannabe618: If his hands are not yet locked this works fine. If they are already locked and he is compressing you then another application is better for this method. The applications shown are just suggestions not set in stone tactics. Nine Dragon Baguazhang changes to fit each circumstance based on the angles and directions of the force being given.
