I thought the whole storyline was obvious. Chell is Caroline's daughter. Chell was brought in to the facility on bring your daughter to work day, hence the reason Chell's name is on that old overgrown clock potato. Caroline got her brain scanned and put into GLaDOS in an attempt to control her, then all hell broke loose. So about 30 years later, Chell wakes up and is forced into the whole portal puzzle thing after GLaDOS ran out of other subjects. The rest is in the games.

@Levitikai It is widely assumed, yes, but there's no real indication of a direct relation between Caroline/GLaDOS and Chell. She might be the daughter of one of the former employees. Caroline was also unwillingly made into GLaDOS or made a part of it at Cave's orders, where she gradually went mad, at which point the aperture scientists started restraining her with the personality cores. Then she killed them all and the games happened.

@dnlkr It would be very interesting to see a Portal Prequel game to kind of tie in the missing pieces. I know of Portal: Prelude, which is a player-made mod for the original Portal game that gives a prequel story. But with the events in Portal 2, it no longer fits in. Perhaps Valve will make a prequel as a part of some DLC? Maybe from the viewpoint of Caroline to see if she is mentally capable of either controlling GLaDOS or becoming GLaDOS? I'm hoping a future story will fill in gaps.

@Levitikai Valve originally planned to have Portal 2 take place in the past, (Which it kinda did when you were in the old test chambers) but then decided to continue the story with Chell. So in my opinion they don't need to do a prequel as long as they're giving us more and more information from the past, which they did give us a lot in Portal 2. We even got to play in the old ones! So I'm 99.99% percent sure there wont be a prequel, but a sequel with maybe the 2 missing parts.

We know from recordings by Cave Johnson that Caroline was his assistant. Caroline was an adult, as seen in the portrait with Johnson, so unless Chell had a sister in her mid-thirties, there's a very high chance that Chell is Caroline's daughter.

The latest recording of Cave Johnson was when he was suffering from moon rock poisoning in the 1980s, around the time GLaDOS went online. "Desperate to cheat death, in 1982 Johnson ordered his engineers to begin research and development on a computer system that could store his consciousness." The Half-Life Wikia is very thorough if you want more conclusions from people who pay attention to little things in the games.

I really don't see any evidence behind cave and Caroline being Chell's parents. First off, cave and caroline seem to be in their thirty's(?) in 1946(date found on a random poster in the old chambers) and the game is set in probably some 2012 time period. Plus, Chell must be in her mid-20's. if you think about it, it wouldn't make sense (I'm not starting a theory argument, just stating what I think but who knows with valve)

By the way, GLaDOS isn't Caroline - they're essentially two minds in the same body, but Caroline's hidden most of the time since being forced into GLaDOS's body, and was forgotten until Old Aperture. Think of it this way - if GLaDOS's brain is like a house, GLaDOS is the one who goes through all the main rooms, and Caroline is confined to an ignored little room upstairs.
