  • I agree and i am currently in Egypt and in Cairo the McDonald's everyone knows Egyptian Sign Language which is really cool (even though i had no clue what was going on). They also provide a Interpreter on major news nets at the bottom of the screen which is cool.

  • This is awesome. Deaf people should not act apologetic about the fact that they're Deaf. I like the point that it actually levels the playing field if the hearing person is put in a position where they don't understand the language and suddenly they're the ones who are forced to make compensation because they're signing impaired. Though I once heard a funny story where the Deaf person started signing and the hearing cashier ran and got a Braille menu!

  • I disagree, the Deaf community does not have a "deficit" that word is like "impairment" or "disability" We do not have a deficit of any kind. Actually we are a language minority group like any other, and we are BI-lingual. It is hearing who don't understand ASL. So English is middle ground for hearing/Deaf contact. I have issues when I go to McDonalds. I get an ice coffee every time I order a mocha latte. No matter if I tell them I want it HOT. Its McDonalds who have the impairment!!

  • @JillianEnright I disagree with.

  • it not easy it hard about it im only one who is deaf but i can talk i know lots people is deaf im sorry about that

  • Good for you! Don't be embarrased of your deafness, and that's really sad that people would look down at you just because you're deaf. There's many of deafs in this world. I believe deafs should have fairnessas in stores. For example, stores should hire at least 1 translator, and in case a deaf walks in, there'll be someone who can help the deaf with delight.

  • Very embarrassing! We seriously know better than that in this world highly-populated with hearies. Very UNlikelihood that they would know sign language. Even if they do, they'd most likely not gonna be good at reading sign language. My recommendation is to do my way... by bring a pen and a notepad with u and write down your order! It's the method where u'd be in controlling position. It's a win-win.

  • Ahaha that last "thumbs up and a wink!"

I don't care if that's sign language or not, it's still sleazy.

  • I am agree with you as when I was ask them for paper and pen instead of deaf. I noticed is difference behave as friendly face than when I was saying deaf.No more sign a unhear and unmouth .

  • we re deaf doesn't mean we can't handle the business. we can handle it!

  • I went to Wendy's where I live nearby. I am deaf. When I order what I want. A cashier asked me what I order. I told them that I am deaf. Simple answer what I want to order food. Answer them in number with sign. A cashier understand me clearly. A cashier try to asked me what size of drink. A cashier make up sign like the size of drink. I order that one easier. (I understand clearly.) I speak out with my mouth what kind of drink I want. A cashier understand me clearly.

  • I understand where you are coming from, but if you were a hearing person in France, would you "choose" to speak English? Also, it may be naive to assume hearing people will actually think, "Oh, I don't know ASL. That makes us equal," instead of "What's that weird thing he's doing with his hands? What? Oh, he must be signing because he's deaf! He can't hear so he's signing! Why is he signing to me? I don't know sign language! What do I do now? Oh I better find a pen and paper!"

  • If they feel sorry for the deaf people, obviously they're aggroant and we all should be comfortable with who we are and whatever we like to apporch with cashiers. I work as cashier in food store myself, there are ways they apporch to me like.. sign, write or speak slow to lipread. Im also deaf person myself... its a true story.

  • Basic idea that no one had thought of. Beside that, have a pager with you readily typed message for what to order. And or even pen and paper ready whom doesn't have blackberry devices and what not.

  • @HighAway thats ur problem if u don't learn how to sign, even if they request. bec we re tired of being look as "CAN"T" there re few deaf work in oil rig in oklahoma. not much of deaf folks work in oil rig.. and i heard new owner of swift trucking company just fired an colorado trucker. just bec he s a deaf.. the more unemployee point for deaf in some small town. i m sick of that bec i love to live in small town why don't they got job. we doesn't like SSI and depending on SSI .

  • @ramsk90

You're fucking stupid rambling that shit to me that you know nothing about me.

I'm Deaf myself. Note the capital D! American employers are as fucked as ADA that correlates a duck sitting in a pond.

I know how does ssi feels like and I feel you bub. so, i stop writing this now as if you stop assume there, deal? ;)

my point of the post if you must know what I meant was; be creative if the communication was mutely inhibited thus to get around to get things across.

    Peace

  • @HighAway and i would like to to face to face with hearing world. that we can do the job right. bec that dude who got fired for being deaf from colorado. from rig jobs. bec he s deaf so he fear to lay him off bec he s a new owner. we need show the world to see us as we can do alot of thing. to get work done. yall just don't know how to make a conversation with us. so u decided called us "DEAF DUMB" hey this is not 1900 anymore this is 2000. we got alot better for our language. so kiss my ass.

  • @ramsk90 its 21 century we understand english very well. but u need to learn how to share the language with us and to be fair with us. u know alot of deaf people in 1700 about thousand of story that parnet kills deaf babys bec they re deaf.

  • @ramsk90 and as for the character ran out; pen n paper and electronic devices can get us around to communicate.

sucks for the dude who got fired, hope for the best for him...

and no im not gonna kiss your fuckin ass. Not goin to flame this because it's not worth it... you're just as stupid as you type. sorry pal.

  • I do that once in a while.

  • wow i never thought about that until i saw your vlog.. next time i will try and see what these response will be. thanks!

  • Ok. Two things. 1. Your suggestion of going up and signing is as ridiculous as an American person going to a French country and speaking English expecting to make the french person feel inferior for not knowing English. Not going to happen. 2. If you really need to establish your superiority to people working at McDonald's...you need to get a life.

  • Dude, YOU need to get a life. 1. Many French people know English, so it's apples and oranges. 2. Although French people are snobbish toward Americans, they don't think they're dumb like many hearing people do of Deafs. 3. You're fulla crap and don't understand anything about the Deaf-World.

  • @Moviewritingjoe sorry i didn't mean to thumb down, i totally agree with u. I have lot of deaf friends and yes hearing people can be idoit, im hearing, and Deaf people are smart just the same as hearing. I don't understand everything about the Deaf World. But my boyfriend is teaching me, he's deaf and loves me so much.

  • i learned from u already . wow ,i did ... i see some hearing say " i am sorry " then i show darn and asked them write paper ... some they did get hearing know some sign language and accept and cool .. to let me know alright

  • It is a very simple yet elegant shift in perspective on both sides! Good work, dndmartin!

  • Yes, there is a similar story like this is the video Audism Unveiled. Watch it, everyone!

  • Very good explanation and thank you for giving support to deaf community!

  • wow that is a good explaining about it

  • Hi

I agree with u 100 percent I tend to use my asl to anywhere I love to see how the hearing people react my language

  • Great Idea!!!! I agree with you 100%

Your pride of ASL may influence hearing to learn Sign Language.

  • i agrred with that, my experienced at McDonald i was use the sign language number from sign i never write, Hearing people cant tell if i am deaf...maybe i am from other country or i am born mute lol but i like your idea. good Job keep it up!

  • I like your idea! I tend to always say out of habit saying" I am deaf" when meeting someone at the shop or anywhere. I should have said something in sign language.

    Great idea! Thanks!

  • I did do that. there nothing wrong with that. it is freedom speech! make a sense to you? uh huh?

  • Think of how many shopkeepers know basic Spanish to keep up with their customers.

MrEggMan, if anyone makes fun of sign language they are complete and utter dolts.

  • wow i didn't think of that! i should try and do that when i go to places like that and see what happens!! great idea!

  • also, i informed them that i am deaf, they didn't gave me an sympathy look that i am deaf. they was very thrilled that they actually have chance to meet deaf people. after i ordered some hamburgers through paper and pen. the workers came to me and asked to teach some ASL so I did. i am strongly suggesting you to ask for pen and paper in the first instead sign in ASL. it's such extremely rude to make them overwhelmed. this weirdo man with white hair need to go to see professional counselor.

  • The point is not to make someone overwhelmed. The point is not approaching someone saying "I have a deficit because I can't hear". It's "do you speak my language?" If hearing peoeple visit another country and they don't speak they language, they don't approach someone and say "I don't speak ____", they go up to someone and ask, "do you speak English?" It's the idea that we are putting ourselves below hearing people without even realizing it. Everyone does what works best for themselves :)

  • everybody, honestly, this man is 100% wrong. this is my second time to write this message. last two days ago, i went to mcdonald's and signed in ASL. they made fun of me and laughed so hard which it actually hurt my feeling. i am considering to against this man's word for suggesting us to sign in asl instead requesting for pen and paper. one day, this weirdo guy with white hair would be totally regret that mcdonald's workers made fun of him and he would need to call his mom for that.

  • wow! you got good point! i will do that for you!

  • I had a deaf person just come up to me and start signing, I had never met him so I didnt understand how he knew I can sign. I asked him how he knew and he said he didnt know i could- he was just hoping I could. It worked out for him, and after that he asked me when I work, because then he knows there will be someone to answer questions in his language. It was a great experience

  • that how i use with my hand asl, i don't use paper beacuse how deaf feel..

  • It Cool i realize u was right point! Next time i will do that Thank for your teach us.

  • i tend use gesture and flow in by natural like when i say #1 meal etc., in gesture without letting them know i can't hear they will notice after all... but i think ur funny asl to whoever u meet. i did sometimes & it worked fine and sometime not! ;)

  • i always ask for paper and pen in asl...that it ....better for me that way ,,,,

  • You are making up the story. I did that before and the hearing people thought I'm mentally retarded or idiot. They gave me an dirty expression.

So, I'm not going to listen your requests. I'll continue and do my way, not urs. Also, my friends agrees with me bec they have done with that before. Bye.

  • hahaha my friend did that before! Cashier doesnt understand so they just "guess" get WRONG meal and give to my friend. My friend got pissed off so I went to calm him down! I explained to cashier he is just deaf. I told my friend it is only better way is write to order. It's only a solution. LOL.

  • uh, sound good.

  • I've tried that, and i think trying to sign to them is worst. they looked at me like i was an idiot loL~!! so i sign paper and pen instead.. like "write.." =)

  • its good point , but i tend to rush order food. because everything my life is about "i have no time" really i m impatient muself. i really don't care about what people think. if they think that way well they got wrong judegment.

  • I agreee you!

  • that is soo true! i do that, i always ask for paper and pen in ASL. next time i'll just start signing haha. THANK YOU DUDE

  • I agree with you. I never thought of that. Sometime, I bring notepad to communicate with hearing employee what I want to order or I just say number 4 or 5 for burger or nuggets. You have good point about that! :) Merry Christmas.

  • I never thought of this. Whenever I go I would do the same but not just for Mcdonald's.

  • That's good thought. I will do this next time at where I want to order...

  • Part 2:

I will use my communication in ASL without my voice whenever I come in at a fast-food restaurant again. Very hilarious! I like your point! Take care and God bless you

  • Totally agreed with you on your point, but partly I had suddenly realized I made it successfully. More than a time, I had signed to those who worked at McDonald's. They understood my communication in ASL, which was almost impossible. How could they understand it? up until then, I found out that I signed and used my voice at the same time. Whoa! Why would I do both? I should have turned off my voice instead.

  • when I do that, they actually ask me where or how they can learn ASL. Obviously, they look up at us. Yes, I agree with your approach theory!

  • hah, thats a good tip! ill do that the next time i go to a McDonald's =)

  • lol yes it's true! ;)
