this map doesn't lag. My GMoD has a crap load of addons and maps yet playing Area 51 doesn't even show any signs of lag or crashing. Even noclip or using too many stuff, the map still works.
I will tell you right now, without play testing it, it is way to big. If it is twice the size of Flatgrass, uses the Maximum amount of Hammer and has a HUMONGOUS sky-box, it is too big. However, it does look like you spent some time on this, making everything look very nice and "sexy" as to say. it laggs cuz u use to many textures. the more textures the less frames per second in tha game. so that is not lag. it is all the textures ganging up and slowing down ur game so u will b weak at 1 point and they will eat ur brains! no, but if he has to open areas then it will lagg for him, because the source engine is built so that you can place blocks in the map that makes the game not draw whats behind it when you cant see the block

I heard you were working on area 52 and i remember on a tv show they said there's rumors about a new area 51 in an old abandoned missile silo but that would be boring you need to make the next one with more interface (especially the ufo) all and all very good map.

To find out where the lag is from, type net_graph 3 in console. A graph will appear bottom right - look at what the biggest colour is. If it's red, that is props and entities in your map, usually colliding.
Because this is the first time I've heard of lag this bad, I'm thinking it's likely a problem with your machine - do you have anything running in the background like a defrag or virus scan? That would cause lag like you mention.
okay... i have something running on the background but on hugeflatconstruct (wich is a bigger file as you said) its not lagging... i never had this kind of lag...

and btw. the admin room is the room in the tower right? cause i get teleportet when i noclip there xD ^^
I've never had that kind of lag either and it's not being reported by anything else. Unless you have a very old graphics card I would suggest the problem is things running in the background, a lack of free space on the drive steam or windows is on, or a broken addon causing lag. Stargate is known to cause lots of strange lag. Also try clearing your garrysmod/cache folder.

(my mom said 1 hour before that she is going to shut down the electric source (sry for my bad english :P) when i dont go to bed now... and now its 00:45 am xDD) i have tryed (at this time) the map, its perfect... i foudn the admin room, the ufo, and had fun... i have entered net_graph 3 in console, less red things to see.. it was a straight line.... when i have moved to the ufo, something changed... well... i can live with the lag... it dont hurtes me xD thank you ^^
Looks grate but in some parts the textures are a bit bland i like the fact that you don't haft have any of the hl2 stuff or css. looks like a grate map good job.
I've just made a few new textures from scratch for the next release of this map, including a some new concrete textures that should make the underground more appealing.

The only reason you gravity could get bugged is if you died or teleported out of the anti-grav chamber (octagonal glass room), just go back in there and come out again.
The silo is for you to build your own rockets - I am considering putting rocket part spawners in the silo for the next version.
For instructions on getting in, look at page 2 of the facepunch thread linked in the discussion.
The admin room is pretty well protected - it's built so that if you can't noclip thru walls you can't get there, meaning if a server wants it secure they can disable noclip or use uclip.
Once you've got in the proper way, try to break in, it isn't easy :P
Adding more detail for the next release candidate now, including a folding walkway to the silo control room, beveled edges and curved inner corners for the runway, some underground corridor detailing and texturing work. Plenty more besides!

i don't have a problem with bad feedback, every piece of bad but constructive feedback we get just makes us want to try more on version 2 however "this map is SHIT..." is usually what comes from a 10year old with his mommy's laptop
too big for singleplayer except if you like building big stuff or flying planes. The map is built for busy build servers with 12-16 players at once. Doesn't feel so big then :P
If you use Hammer to create a "template" NPC you get lots of configuration options for how that NPC behaves. You then need to use an npc_template_maker to spawn copies of the template and control how many of each there are and when/where they spawn.
Also configuring the NPCs to work together in squads, covering each other and sticking together is all set up the same way.
Getting the strider to target people, respond to its surrounding and clean itself up after death was much harder :P
I've only been mapping for a little longer than the 6 months spent on this map - it was one of the first maps I started, but did several others before returning to this one and redoing it.
I spent probably 10% of the time building and 90% of the time testing and improving stuff. Over 100 betas!
The video and music is all the work of SparkMedia, but yeah, I'm not a fan of the metal/rap soundtracks either, this track is ace and its one of his own too so no youtube licensing issues :P
The shotting range is noded for the built-in npc war. The map is too big to fully node effectively - I could add some nodes to popular build areas but the map already has nearly 90% of the maximum possible point entites (like ai nodes).
The range area though is fully noded with all types of node that have an effect.
Congratulations for this fabulous map! It is a great map for anything: building,exploring,shooting,having fun...and despite it's size,it doesn't lag at all. Thank You for creating the map, i love it! GREAT JOB!!!
The anti-lag system (area portals etc.) is the most complete I've ever seen in a build map and took a lot of plannning and research to get right.
I've got several other maps in the pipeline, the next I will focus on will either be a spacebuild map with a few features I've never seen before and a different theme to the usual or Area 52, aka the Cheyenne Mountain Complex (aka NORAD or Stargate Command). I've already fully modelled the mountain's surface using USGS satellite data :P

Yes, in the underground shooting range there are strider nodes and an strider already set up to fight, along with combine soldiers, manhacks and antlions.
Try taking the strider out with only a grav gun and the explosive barrels that are stacked around the range :)
3. It's not just one spot - its the Source Grid. If you go out of it on ANY map things get very weird and for SOME PEOPLE causes a crash.
4. We have been testing this for several months on our public gameserver. Plus, this is a Release Candidate, not FINAL yet (although this isn't a mapping problem).
"mehdyweaponmen" it is probably his first map.. and to be honest, Its good.. Dont matter if theres nothing to do, he tryed. Something you cant do in a million years
That framerate is absolutely horrible. If I was you I would have had someone else do the presentation video, someone who is cabable of filming at atleast 25fps.
That low framerate just gives a poor image of the map that its laggy or otherwise buggy.
We will be releasing more videos later and will get higher quality footage for those, but I think you comment is a little harsh - not everybody has the latest pc hardware and a lot of work went into both the map and the video.
I could have done this video at 100fps at 1920x1200 but my video editing skills are very poor when compared to sparkmedia01 who filmed this.
Unfortunately doesn't have a £2K PC to film it on, but we chose production quality over framerate here.

I kind of wish they could finally open the real Area 51 interior to the public. This map is probably the only closest thing we can get to for now. What was it they exactly did not want us to see in there? Aliens? or was "aliens" just a cover up for a secret weapon? Whatever the reason though, this map is going to be one kickass deathmatch battleground.
think about it.... we have weapon testing and secret aircraft that we don't want our enemys to know about.... if we realise it to the public we cant use that testing facility anymore for what? to prove to all the poeple who belive there are alians there wrong? not worth it....
The range is fully AI noded - to node the whole map would take thousands of nodes and the map is already at about 90% of the total allowable point entities.
I'll add a few noded paths around the place in popular build areas so NPC won't just stand there.
Well I was thinking of making a small animation with this map, with US troops fighting off aliens. All I need now is some US Soldiers that actually download (bit torrent is failing, stupid garry), and an added weapon script that works, and I'll be happy.

As for bittorrent, it works great if it's set up properly, but that can be tricky.
My advice is to download uTorrent, and type "utorrent setup guide" into google - the guide on the first link will explain everything, but pay close attention to your router and firewall ports (you should see a green tick on the uTorrent statusbar after a few minutes of downloading).

1. the reason your guns are removes is due to a live fire room underground that will remove a players phisgun and replace it with standard weps in a build server, all you have to do is to make sure that you dont noclip into that particular room.
2. the reason it will crash after leaving the play area is becuase the map is at the maximum limits of gmods capacity simalar to how you cannot escape gm_flatgrass.
If you go out of the game grid on any map in any source game it will either crash of go very weird.
This map takes up the whole grid for maximum space. All of the terrain outside the fence isn't really there, its a 1/16th scale skybox underneath the accessible part of the map.
Some maps like the CSS maps are designed so that if you leave the grid, it returns you to the middle of the map. Try it on Office if you dont believe me.
I believe you - it's done with trigger_teleport and is quite easy to do, but has issues in garry's mod where it would be very easy to fly a complex plane into the trigger and get the whole thing teleported inside something else in the middle of the map, or inside out, or spazzing etc.
I am considering a method of hiding the tele triggers inside the skybox wall and putting trigger_push volumes inside the walls to push planes away before they ram into the wall, but its tricky to do properly.
@Jeliigirado: I think anything the gmod website categorizes as "popular" is based on the huge amount of people that download the same item in a certain amount of time. This map is only the first version, and I think Bunglist would prefer anyone who finds a bug or two in the map make note of it.

i'm afraid your informations a touch off there so id better corect you on a few key points if you dont mind:
- client machines dont exchange texture data beyond simple "the texture on here is called ..."
- the textures on maps are either refencing directly to your HL2 root folder or to packaged texture and if never "sent" or "recieved" when online
-lag is caused by sent or recieved data being too large or reccuring therefore textures cannot cause it

The only way to get full control of the NPCs is using Hammer.
Garrysmod can do the basics just spawning them, but most of their more complex features are unavailable in-game.

The shotting range is noded for the built-in npc war. The map is too big to fully node effectively - I could add some nodes to popular build areas but the map already has nearly 90% of the maximum possible point entites (like ai nodes).
The range area though is fully noded with all types of node that have an effect.

The anti-lag system (area portals etc.) is the most complete I've ever seen in a build map and took a lot of plannning and research to get right.
I've got several other maps in the pipeline, the next I will focus on will either be a spacebuild map with a few features I've never seen before and a different theme to the usual or Area 52, aka the Cheyenne Mountain Complex (aka NORAD or Stargate Command). I've already fully modelled the mountain's surface using USGS satellite data :P

Yes, in the underground shooting range there are strider nodes and an strider already set up to fight, along with combine soldiers, manhacks and antlions.
Try taking the strider out with only a grav gun and the explosive barrels that are stacked around the range :)

4 you should look more into testing and fix little things like that befor leting out to the public

1. Congrats.
2. Keep going. Flatgrass is not maximum size.
3. It's not just one spot - its the Source Grid. If you go out of it on ANY map things get very weird and for SOME PEOPLE causes a crash.
4. We have been testing this for several months on our public gameserver. Plus, this is a Release Candidate, not FINAL yet (although this isn't a mapping problem).
5. Play more gmod. Read the Source SDK Wiki.

That framerate is absolutely horrible. If I was you I would have had someone else do the presentation video, someone who is cabable of filming at atleast 25fps.
That low framerate just gives a poor image of the map that its laggy or otherwise buggy.

We will be releasing more videos later and will get higher quality footage for those, but I think you comment is a little harsh - not everybody has the latest pc hardware and a lot of work went into both the map and the video.
I could have done this video at 100fps at 1920x1200 but my video editing skills are very poor when compared to sparkmedia01 who filmed this.
Unfortunately doesn't have a £2K PC to film it on, but we chose production quality over framerate here.

Use Source Recorder. It allows you to record at 30FPS no matter what.

I kind of wish they could finally open the real Area 51 interior to the public. This map is probably the only closest thing we can get to for now. What was it they exactly did not want us to see in there? Aliens? or was "aliens" just a cover up for a secret weapon? Whatever the reason though, this map is going to be one kickass deathmatch battleground.

The range is fully AI noded - to node the whole map would take thousands of nodes and the map is already at about 90% of the total allowable point entities.
I'll add a few noded paths around the place in popular build areas so NPC won't just stand there.

Well I was thinking of making a small animation with this map, with US troops fighting off aliens. All I need now is some US Soldiers that actually download (bit torrent is failing, stupid garry), and an added weapon script that works, and I'll be happy.

As for bittorrent, it works great if it's set up properly, but that can be tricky.
My advice is to download uTorrent, and type "utorrent setup guide" into google - the guide on the first link will explain everything, but pay close attention to your router and firewall ports (you should see a green tick on the uTorrent statusbar after a few minutes of downloading).

1. the reason your guns are removes is due to a live fire room underground that will remove a players phisgun and replace it with standard weps in a build server, all you have to do is to make sure that you dont noclip into that particular room.
2. the reason it will crash after leaving the play area is becuase the map is at the maximum limits of gmods capacity simalar to how you cannot escape gm_flatgrass.

If you go out of the game grid on any map in any source game it will either crash of go very weird.
This map takes up the whole grid for maximum space. All of the terrain outside the fence isn't really there, its a 1/16th scale skybox underneath the accessible part of the map.

Some maps like the CSS maps are designed so that if you leave the grid, it returns you to the middle of the map. Try it on Office if you dont believe me.

I believe you - it's done with trigger_teleport and is quite easy to do, but has issues in garry's mod where it would be very easy to fly a complex plane into the trigger and get the whole thing teleported inside something else in the middle of the map, or inside out, or spazzing etc.
I am considering a method of hiding the tele triggers inside the skybox wall and putting trigger_push volumes inside the walls to push planes away before they ram into the wall, but its tricky to do properly.

@Jeliigirado: I think anything the gmod website categorizes as "popular" is based on the huge amount of people that download the same item in a certain amount of time. This map is only the first version, and I think Bunglist would prefer anyone who finds a bug or two in the map make note of it.
