long nails are some kind of bohemian jazz counterculture signal to the world that they are cool hipsters that also have a mortgage, a chevy car payment, and a fat wife that bitches at them to stop pounding on the conga and take the lab for a walk and dont forget to scoop up the pile of shit that it drops on the neighbors front yard..
How does one contact the person doing this demonstration? I don't see a link for email. I'd like to know if he sells instructional DVD's. I haven't seen any commercial instructional DVD's I like. I enjoy these brief lessons, but being on dial up, I'll be 80 or 90 before I get them all to load. Thanks for a response.
JC, I play a Segundo and Tumba. Right now my focus is technique and I don't want to add Quinto to the mix. When I do play, I prefer "Open Mic" type sets (that's my "On the job" training) and I hate when my SOUND doesn't fit the mix. I usually play Funk, Goove, Jazz, and Latin sets. How would you tune?
what is the obsession with fingernails??????.....ask Giovanni that question, ask Tata guines that question(u cant hes gone)...ask Paoli Mejias...i use my pinky nails if u wasnt to know to clean my ears !...hahhahahahahaha..give me a break....
well to be exact the name of the drum from Africa, similar to the Conga drum was called "Ngoma"(it has pegs) drum..but the Conga drum itself was reinvented in Cuba..."JC" Johnny Conga
Hello, Jhony, I was taking West African drumming with african drummer, but I had to quit, because the instructor was teaching always the same. Your videos are very instructionals. Thank you very much.
There are no conga drums originally from Congo. The conga drums that you find in Africa are models copied from the latin percussion. The conga drums were developed in 1940's by caribbean drummers. The name conga comes from the dance named conga in Cuba.
Mikesca, you should take your own advice. If you go to Cuba, and speak to ethnomusicologists or percussion masters over there, they will inform YOU that when the African slaves came to Cuba they were not allowed to bring their drums with them, so they had no choice but to try and recreate the drums they once played in Africa. So, you've got tumbadoras which are only BASED on drums from the Congo. But no authority on the subject would dispute that the tumbadoras are distinctly Cuban.
FANASTIC!!! thank you so much for offering these lessons,I've found all your lessons very informative and helpful and look forward to more on YouTube.
I really apreciate your time i teaching us the FUNDAMENTALS. I'M FROM CUBA AND STARTED PLAYING HITTING MY DESK> NEVER COULD AFFORD A CONGA OR TUMBADORA BUT NOW I WANT TO START PLAYING AGAIN ON A REAL CONGA AT MY LOCAL CHURCH. GOD BLESS!!
yeah i never could afford congas and i just praticed by hitting objects until i found a website called thomann and you can buy congas from 90-1000 euro which is about 130-1200 dollars.

I disagree with you ...
The Kongo kingdom today's (DRcongo , congo brazzaville and Gabon).
It was derived from the "Makuta drums" or similar drums associated with Afro-Cubans of Central African descent.
Ps : Go to cuba , and get well informed.
mikesca1980 2 years ago
The conga drum has metal pegs and the traditional Congo drums does not have metal pegs.
Ps: I play african percussion and I don´t need to go to Cuba, my family is Puerto Rican.
