Maybe you find it suspicious that I find von Otter´s rendition of this wondrous aria absolutely stunning. I am swedish but in great art being nationalistic would be ridiculous.. Von Otter is a very disciplined singer, sometimes somewhat lame in her perfection but here it is so obvious she is totally in love with her Lied. The ensemble is simply outstanding. Brava, Ann Sofie !!!
This is one of my celestial moments on YouTube. I love this rendition and readily forgive Miss von Otter of the transposition and the tenor omission. It is simply heavenly as it is.
What a superlative singer! The voice, range, technique, exemplary control of tone and breath (her diminuendo is spot-on), phrasing, elegance, charm, stage presence, and versatility are admirable. I do believe she is the greatest mezzo-soprano in the world today (the fantastic Ewa Podles is really a contralto). Listen to Madame von Otter, THEN compare to the vastly overrated, hysterically yodelling, immature, vulgar antics of Signorina Cecilia Bartoli!
No doubt many may prefer Fleming or Tikaniwa for their more impressive voices, but for my money I prefer the sincerity von Otter exudes in this particular performance.
Never heard this arranged for piano quintet, but it surely works when played so well as this. Von Otter sings so sensitively, and the whole performance of this aria is heavenly!
Like many others on this page, I keep coming back to Anne Sofie's performance of this beautiful aria. The serene composure and wistfulness and sheer beauty of her voice, together with the elegance of the vocal line, are breathtaking.
I adore this woman - I find her an exceptional singer and such a serious musician. I cant help but hear Renee Fleming's unreal vocal perfection in my head with every single tone Sophie sings in this piece. I also find the arrangement fabulous. She looks at the first violin with such kindness!
The Green Velvet is truly and utterly Divine on her :)
Extraordinary playing. Such warmth. The first time I just listened to the sheer beauty of von Otter's voice. Then I went back to listen to how beautifully wedded the voice and the ensemble were. BRAVISSIMO!
Absolutely beautiful performance. Though I've always heard this with full orchestra, the chamber ensemble lends itself very well to the subtle beauty/color of this wonderful piece by Korngold. Superb singing.
Unfortunately, I was unable to attend though I know it must have surely been beautiful. She looks to be resting & totally @peace in her music. Absolutely beautiful.
Absolutely beautiful. It is tastefully done. It is breath taking & performed wonderfully well. Sehr sehr schon (umlaut) Thank U for this music. It makes me peaceful to hear it.
@shrrryl I attended this concert and It was one of the most beautiful concerts I've heard. Marietta's song was the last piece that was performed that evening and it was a magic moment which I'll never forget.
@rigoletto61 I wish I culd have been there. Sofie Von Otter's voice fits this piece like a glove. She's one of the most vocally perfect singers around.
This is beyond perfect. I am moved to tears by von Otter's beautifully measured performance... a rich and wonderful experience which has genuinely enhanced my life.
Whenever this is done as a solo instead of a duet, one of the most interesting questions is how they will deal with Paul's part. Actually, taking Paul down a little would make this much easier to stage. This is nicely done.
Wanted to know how to write in English to be sure of saying properly to you the highest honor possible, Ms. Anne Sofie. Watch you sing the Marietta's Song, from the opera Die tote Stadt (The Dead City) - Erich Wolfgang Korngold, is one of the most sublime experiences that life has given me. I wish you peace and happiness, from the deepest of my heart.

I've listened to and watched all of the interpretations on YouTube and I can't find another performance that matches the simplicity of the quintet and voice for elegance, grace and refinement. But then I'm addmitteldly in love with Sophie and her humility and joy of singing.
Utterly sublime. It works so well with the quintet. I'm not so sure on the historical accuracy of the arrangement - there seems enough bickering on here to cover that. At the end of the day though, an utterly sublime performance, a truly unique and great singer!!!
I find it shameful that there are rude coments here. Whether this is the greatest performance ever and he best arrangement ever is not the point. We are all lucky to be alive to hear Sofie v O singing in this sublime performance. It is simply superb.
Happiness that once was with me, return to me my faithful beloved. Evening falls but you are my light, my day. Frightfully my heart beats restlessly but hope is rising towards heaven.
Although sad times are approaching, do return my faithful love, bow forward to me with your pale face.Death will not separate us, but once you have had to leave me, believe me there is life after death
Or this more literal translation: Joy, that still remains to me, Come to me, my true love. Evening sinks into the grove You are my light and day. Anxiously beats heart on heart Hope is soaring heavenward. Though dark sorrow comes closer, Come to me, my true love. Lean your pale face (towards me) Death does not separate us. If you must leave me one day, Remember, there is an afterlife.
You're welcome. Here's more then: The 2nd line ("Rück zu mir") specifically means "move close to me", or better "draw close to me". In the 7th line "Sorge" actually means "worry" rather than sorrow. But the adjective "trüb" (from "trüben" which in its origin meant "to bring into a state of unrest") leads to a number of possible translations such as dark or bleak, e.g.disturbed waters can become cloudy or dark, and so on. The non-poetic word order would normally be "trübe Sorge".
On a side note, it is Interesting that the imperative "glaub" (believe) in Korngold's original last line ("glaub, es gibt ein Auferstehen") has been changed in this performance to "denk" (think or here, remember/bear in mind), giving it a more positive aspect.

This is to volumeraiser...This aria is actually a DUET in the opera so, what she did here was the original version with the string quartete taking the part of the tenor...just so you know.
I actually perused all of the comments on this thread... Do you not realize that ASM only sang the main theme, and the piano quartet played the rest of the aria?
I am not saying anything against ASM (I love her performance)- but she did NOT sing the entire ARIA - please go look it up (the string/pianist played the other parts) - Renee Fleming does do a beautiful job. BTW - is there anyway we can get beyond the bickering on youtube- the inane comments etc?
Do you know that this song - Marietta's Lied - is only one song of the whole Korngold repertoire which Anne Sofie and the Piano Quartet performed at the Theatro Musical de Paris Chattelet. I have the whole concert of that KORNGOLD EVENING.
And by the way, when you look at the posting for Renee Fleming, it is typical of her and her fans. Look at the background, she stands in the middle of such magnificent background at the Opera House in Paris to enhance her persona. Anne Sofie von Otter would not care less about trimmings like that since obviously she is beautiful in whatever way. Just her countenance alone, you know she is an aristocrat. It says it all.
elizabeth. You are correct. Anne Sofie von Otter is a true aristocrat. She is quality in whatever she sings. She sings in a slightly lower key than Kiri, as she is a mezzo. However, the song is always delivered in the true and honest Anne Sofie style. I am a big fan of whatever Anne Sofie sings.
How I fell in love with von Otter. Way back in the mid-90s my husband had been urging to attend her concerts. Then I took a guest to her concert with Sir Andrew Davis. My guest was impressed saying she is young and beautiful. No effect on me. Again my husband phoned me and urged me to attend her concert just across my workplace, so I said: Why not? Her rendition of Mahler with M Honeck conducting took me by storm. I collected her CDS, never miss her performance. Brilliant, beautiful in every way
Elizabeth- You are absolutely correct! Anne Sofie is one of the great artists of our generation. She is utterly without pretension, musically and personally, as befits someone who has an absolutely clear knowledge of what is important and what is mere nonsense. She has never done anything at less than the highest standard, and I'm in love with her too- and so is my wife!
Well, that's what they say too about Cecilia Bartoli singing on the high flying C sometimes. But no matter, mezzo or soprano, one can still distinguish and appreciate the beauty of the voice - colour, timbre, expression, emotionality - which I cannot find in Fleming's voice. Okey, Fleming's is a so-called luscious voice but I don't find it captivating. She could reach the highest and broadest range but still, it fails to move me. Very personal aspect of appreciating singers? Suppose so!
I've loved her work for almost twenty years. She has done a tremendous job in interpreting this wonderful lied. Brava Anne Sofie! And the accompaniment of the musicians is just superb!
Hi, Needmorebrain com needmorerefinedtaste. Obviously, you have no inkling of what beauty and expression are like. Grow up and refine yourself, otherwise, go back to the wilderness.
Most beautiful rendition of Marrietta's song. I also like Te kanawa's. Von Otter's dept and emotionality in her voice come to the fore. Bravo Anne Sofie. Your are the greatest.
Anne Sofie von Otter is an exceptional artist and I am so pleased to have found this performance. Thanks for sharing it with us. Korngold is an underappreciated composer but I have always loved his music, beginning with my first exposure in the films, and his concert work later in my life.
Well, if things had turned out somewhat differently my response to that would be "What about Lorraine Hunt Lieberson?" but alas! So instead, my response to that is...actually, I am so spoilt for choice in which singers to single out as a reply to that so I´ll just dismiss that as errant nonsense.
No doubt you are the type who hate beauty because for sure you look like a beast and think like one. It is very obvious on what you see singing on the screen - a beautiful woman with a magnificent voice. Shame on you.
Ha! Don't feel offended. By no way I criticized her quality of singing or her voice performance. All I said was that she has a funny facial expression. But well, I guess I stand corrected... She looks like a hamster suffering from constipation.. I have to apologize...
Funny...funny,but you really NEEDMOREBRAIN, if not MOREEYES-TASTE. Von Oter is someone who has no pretension, does not need to appear or look beautiful because she is naturally one. You just want to be mean. Obviously she has the looks and talent par excellence.
ffs giowhateveryournameis.. grow up and get a life. This critique of past and present is getting boring to the extreme. I put my hands up and admit that I'm no expert on the matter BUT I do listen with my ears and feel what I like. It's what makes ALL forms of music such an individual thing.

She has never done anything at less than the highest standard, and I'm in love with her too- and so is my wife!

this is he most beautiful version of this Aria I've heard...Renee Fleming could learn from this one

Is she really a mezzo?
hullguy123 3 years ago
kinda...she is an 'almost soprano' and is billed as one sometimes.
altodivo 3 years ago
Well, that's what they say too about Cecilia Bartoli singing on the high flying C sometimes. But no matter, mezzo or soprano, one can still distinguish and appreciate the beauty of the voice - colour, timbre, expression, emotionality - which I cannot find in Fleming's voice. Okey, Fleming's is a so-called luscious voice but I don't find it captivating. She could reach the highest and broadest range but still, it fails to move me. Very personal aspect of appreciating singers? Suppose so!

Just SUBLIME!

Absolutely exquisite! Thank you so very much for posting.

Most beautiful rendition of Marrietta's song. I also like Te kanawa's. Von Otter's dept and emotionality in her voice come to the fore. Bravo Anne Sofie. Your are the greatest.

I vote this as the best version to date!!! Very moving!!!

I am a recent admirer of Miss von Otter and find stunningly beautiful in this video. She is amazing.

Anne Sofie von Otter is an exceptional artist and I am so pleased to have found this performance. Thanks for sharing it with us. Korngold is an underappreciated composer but I have always loved his music, beginning with my first exposure in the films, and his concert work later in my life.

"As for todays singers. They just can't sing."
Well, if things had turned out somewhat differently my response to that would be "What about Lorraine Hunt Lieberson?" but alas! So instead, my response to that is...actually, I am so spoilt for choice in which singers to single out as a reply to that so I´ll just dismiss that as errant nonsense.

What a beautiful, moving piece this is - well done Korngold!

In this arrangement the piano and strings take up the Male part - wait till you hear this piece as a duet! You are in for a treat.
Love to all....

Anne Sofie sings so beautiful! She has a way of touching people. Both with her voice and with her acting!

I am no fan of opera due to my parental home.
But I love to hear An Sofie singing. She is an allround talent with exellent expression.
She is emotionly moved as you can see? Some don't I read. How is that possible? With such a fine singer. I adore her every bit.

No doubt you are the type who hate beauty because for sure you look like a beast and think like one. It is very obvious on what you see singing on the screen - a beautiful woman with a magnificent voice. Shame on you.
elizabethvonslussen 3 years ago
Ha! Don't feel offended. By no way I criticized her quality of singing or her voice performance. All I said was that she has a funny facial expression. But well, I guess I stand corrected... She looks like a hamster suffering from constipation.. I have to apologize...
needmorebrain 3 years ago
Funny...funny,but you really NEEDMOREBRAIN, if not MOREEYES-TASTE. Von Oter is someone who has no pretension, does not need to appear or look beautiful because she is naturally one. You just want to be mean. Obviously she has the looks and talent par excellence.

ffs giowhateveryournameis.. grow up and get a life. This critique of past and present is getting boring to the extreme. I put my hands up and admit that I'm no expert on the matter BUT I do listen with my ears and feel what I like. It's what makes ALL forms of music such an individual thing.
For what it's worth... I liked it.
