Ethics are defined by people. Just like your ethics as dictated in the bible were ALSO defined by people. You just didn't see the people, and so they were able to call their words the words of god and you believe them.
The lord does not counsel you in hard times. Only you can counsel yourself. And you can. Keep it real Christians, your time will come just as that of people that believed Zeus made lightning. Civilization is maturing, and WE WILL get over religion. My children will never know god

"Religion is for people who have never matured in their understanding of ethics. Religion teaches a child's view of ethics, that 'being good' means 'obeying your parent.' It gives a moral blank check to those bold enough, dishonest enough, to claim to speak for God. Atheism means looking at ethical questions as an adult among other adults, considering ethics as a means of maintaining peace and cooperation among equals, so that all may pursue happiness within the limits that ethics defines."
C.S. Lewis said that the Bible is not for children, it is for adults. But anyway, even if you live by ethics only and not by faith and trust in Christ, what will your life have been at the point of death? What will your ethics have done for you? They have no redeeming value as far as salvation is concerned. Our lives are but a brief moment here in this world and then we slip away into eternity. You must repent and believe the gospel. Christ lived, died and was raised again. Justification.
It is terribly pathetic that you need some justification for doing good other than simply the good for its own sake. I don't need a reward (70 virgins, golden streets in heaven, w/e) for being a good person, like a dog working for a treat. I use my brain, decide what is right (golden rule, anyone?) and act accordingly.
So you're saying some guy that (supposedly) died a few thousand years ago is redeeming value for your life? Grow up, people. Be good because it is good, not because "God said so."
Praise the Lord, for his mercy endures forever.
